CITRUS BELT LEAGUE
Senior right-hander Matt Andriese limited Yucaipa to three hits and helped defending champion Redlands East Valley to a 2-0 win over the Thunderbirds in a pivotal Citrus Belt League game Friday at Yucaipa.
The game was a pitcher’s duel from the start with Andriese going head-to-head with Yucaipa’s highly-touted junior Matt Davidson. Andriese (4-0) struck out five and walked one while Davidson (2-1) fanned eight and scattered five hits.
REV (7-1, 3-0) made the most of the few scoring opportunities, chalking up lone runs in the third and seventh innings. In the third Tyler Chatwood, who has signed with UCLA, lined a single and reached third on an error. He scored on a run-scoring single by Jeremy Perez.
The Wildcats added an insurance run in the seventh when Eric Young reached on a single, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a single by Josh Salmon.
The Wildcats also made some key defensive plays to keep the shutout in<NO1> <NO>tact. In the fourth, the Thunderbirds had runners on first and third with one out after an intentional walk.
Chad Erickson, however, grounded into a 5-4-3 double play.
One inning earlier, Chatwood threw out a Yucaipa at the plate trying to score from second on a base hit.
There were no extra base hits in the game and no player had more than one hit.
Yucaipa (7-2, 3-1) will compete in the Anderson Bats National Classic next week at Cal State Fullerton. The Thunderbirds will face Christian Brothers (Tenn.) in their opener on Monday.
Rialto 5, Miller 1
Nick Martinez stroked a two-run single in the first inning to give pitcher Eric Hernandez a 3-0 lead and send the Knights (5-4, 1-1) past the Rebels (1-1).
Hernandez, who fanned eight, was supported by Xavier DelaCruz, who had a double and triple among his three hits, and three RBI. Hernandez also had three hits and an RBI.
Redlands 5, Fontana 5
Scott Turpin, Adam Turpin and Ryne Arnold all had two hits to lead the Terriers (1-2). Chris Ramirez had two doubles and an RBI for Fontana (1-2) and Eddie Ortiz had three hits.
Carter 6, Eisenhower 1
Doug Conrado was 2-for-3 with two RBI for Carter (8-3, 2-0).
Danny Bechtel (3-0) allowed three hits in a complete game win with eight striekouts and one walk.
Charles Kelly two hits and an RBI for Carter.
MT. BALDY LEAGUE
Chaffey 9, Ontario 5
Jose Guillen went 2-for-4 with three RBI in the Tigers’ (4-7, 1-3) first league victory over the Jaguars.
Ricahrd Sanchez went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Chaffey.
Colony 11, Montclair 6
Tony Wilson and Peter Soria drove in two runs each for the Titans (4-5, 3-0), who beat the Cavaliers (3-6, 0-3). The Titans captalized with a seven run second inning in which Montclair couldn’t bounce back and left Dylan Zumer to pitch four innings of scoreless relief.
Jeremy Weber hit a home run for Montclair.
Don Lugo 16, Garey 5
Charlie Hinojosa and Matt Alton each homered in the Conquistadores rout of the Vikings.
Alton was 4-for-4 and finsihed with four RBI for Don Lugo (5-4). Hinojosa had six RBI.
SAN ANDREAS LEAGUE
San Gorgonio 9, Colton 2
Alex Rueda pitched a nine-hitter, walking three, striking out 10 and allowing only one earned run as the Spartans (8-1, 2-1) routed the Yellowjackets (1-8, 1-2).
Andy Crowley was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs and Nick Heusterberg drove in two runs for San Gorgonio.
