[BODY]FONTANA — When the Kaiser High School girls soccer team entered halftime down one goal to Summit in Wednesday’s Sunkist League opener, Cats coach Dave Showalter told his players to settle down.
“I thought we were too excited out there, too anxious,” Showalter said. “I told the girls that we were doing good things, we just needed to relax a little bit.”
Showalter’s advice was heeded, as Kaiser blitzed the visiting SkyHawks for four second-half goals en route to a 4-1 victory. Kaiser out-shot Summit 8-1 in the second half.
Sophomore forward Tiffany Pena continued her torrid goal-scoring pace with a hat trick <NO1>adding a hat trick to give<NO>that gave her 25 goals this season. Pena also set up another goal — a 19-yard free kick by Jessica Cortez — by drawing a foul from Summit goalkeeper Gisselle Valiente on a loose ball just outside the penalty area.
Cortez’s goal in the 53rd minute put the Cats (10-4-1 overall, 1-0 Sunkist League) ahead to stay at 2-1. But it was Kaiser’s first goal that really turned the game in the Cats’ favor.
Kaiser wasted little time getting on the board in the second half, scored in the first minute after halftime when Pena, taking advantage of an error by Summit (9-2-4, 0-1) sweeper Elizabeth Amado, got behind the SkyHawks defense and scored past Valiente.
“The ball kind of squeezed through her legs,” Pena said. “I got behind her and had an open shot.”
Pena’snext goal came in the 65th minute as she outran Amado to a loose ball just outside the penalty area, touched it past her and launched a shot over Valiente’s outstretched arms.
“(Cortez) missed the first eight games, which really allowed Tiffany to get involved and get some playing time,” Showalter said of the Rancho Cucamonga transfer. “Now that we have them both we have some good weapons. But if the midfielders don’t make the passes, it doesn’t matter.”
Estephany Monroy got the assist on Pena’s second goal with a nice through ball while Vanessa Chavarin’s throw-in resulted in a Pena header that completed the hat trick.
“We just kept coming,” Pena said. “We wanted to go out there and get this win and it feels good.”
