BOYS SOCCER: CIF-SS-PLAYOFFS-DIVISION 4-SEMIFINALS: EL RANCHO 3, CATHEDRAL 1

El Rancho High School’s soccer team, ranked
among the national leaders most of the season, hasn’t played its best
during stretches of the playoffs.
But the Dons step up when they need to, which they showed Tuesday
afternoon at Cathedral High School.
Miguel Vilchis and Federico Bobadilla scored back-to-back goals
during the middle of the first half and the Dons will play of its
second consecutive CIF-Southern Section Division 4 title after
rallying for a 3-1 victory over the Phantoms in the semifinals at
Balzano Family Field.

GIRLS SOCCER: CIF-SS-PLAYOFFS-DIVISION 5-SEMIFINALS: LOMPOC CABRILLO 4, LA SERNA 1

Soccer is a game of the lower extremities, feet, shins, knees and legs. But La Serna High School’s girls squad also made great use of their upper extremity, the head, in demolishing visiting Lompoc Cabrillo, 4-1, Tuesday in the semifinal round of the CIF-Southern Section, Division 5.
With the victory, the Lancers (18-5-5) qualify for the finals Friday or Saturday against the Downey-Cajon winner.
La Serna used their aggressive play and quickness to knock off the Division’s top-seeded Conquistadores (22-2-6) before a large crowd with partly sunny skies and a chilly breeze. The field showed the remnants of Monday’s rainstorm.
The Lancers had a pair of headers for goals, one each by Michelle Reed and Moriah Earley, which proved to be enough to topple Cabrillo. Reed’s goal came with 28 minutes gone in the first half off a well-placed corner kick by Danielle Telles, who was given an assist.

GIRLS SOCCER: CIF-SS-PLAYOFFS-DIVISION 3-CHAMPIONSHIP: CLAREMONT 1, ST. LUCY’S 0

The third time was the charm for the Claremont High School girls soccer team.
Winless in two games this season against St. Lucy, the Wolfpack picked the perfect time to break through with a 1-0 win over the Regents to earn a berth in Friday’s CIF-Southern Section Division 3 championship game against Bishop Amat.
St. Lucy’s (17-9-2) entered Tuesday’s semifinals showdown knowing it was the only team to beat the nationally ranked Wolfpack (26-1-4) this season. Not only that, the Regents played Claremont to a tie in their second game during Sierra League play.
It was apparent right away that things would be different in the rubber match. The Wolfpack scored in the third minute of the game on a goal by sophomore Madison Stark, who was assisted by fellow sophomore Hannah Chua.
On the play, Chua connected with Stark, who found herself with only the goalie to beat from about 10 yards away. Stark sent her shot into the back-right corner of the net for the only score of the game. Stark also accounted for Claremont’s lone goal in its 1-0 win over Diamond Bar in last Friday’s quarterfinals.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: CIF-SS-PLAYOFFS-DIVISION 3A-SEMIFINALS: BISHOP AMAT 46, COVINA 32

Defense has been what’s taken the Bishop Amat High School girls basketball program to its current lofty levels. And it was defense on Saturday night that punched the Lancers ticket into next week’s CIF-Southern Section Division 3A championship game at Anaheim Convention Center.
The Lancers got visiting Covina in a hole early then used their defense to never let the Colts dig out in a 46-32 win that has Amat on the verge of winning its fifth Southern Section title under head coach Richard Wiard. Amat will play Oak Park at a date to be determined next week.
“This is a very good feeling,” Wiard said. “It’s a great opportunity for the kids. We had a rough league season because we play some really good teams, but the kids persevered. They continue to improve and we’re playing some of our best basketball right now.”
The win improved Amat to 20-11. The Lancers are the division’s No. 3 seed despite being an at-large team. Covina, which was the division’s No. 2 seed, saw its dream season end a round short of where the Colts wanted to be. The Colts finished 25-4.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: CIF-SS-PLAYOFFS-DIVISION 2AA-QUARTERFINALS: KEPPEL 56,

score a 3-foot basket with 4.2 seconds to play to give Mark Keppel
High School a 56-55 victory over Canyon of Canyon Country in the
CIF-Southern Section Division 2AA quarterfinals on Saturday
night.
“I just wanted it to go in so badly,” the junior said. “I didn’t know
if it was going to go in.”
The Cowboys took a 55-54 lead, their first lead of the game since the
second quarter, when Alia McCoy scored on a layup with 11 seconds to
play. Keppel coach Hon Trieu called timeout on the rushed inbounds
pass, with 8.9 seconds remaining.
“Why get in her way?” Trieu said of the plan to give the ball to her
best player. “I’m not that good of a coach. That’s why she’s Alyson
Lock.”
