SOFTBALL: KATELLA TOURNAMENT – CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL – MIRA COSTA 7, SOUTH HILLS 4

Breanna Kelly improved to 8-1 and went the distance to pick up the win for the Mustangs.
Katie Saunders went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Meghan von Behren came up big at the place going 2 for 4 with a double and one RBI for Mira Costa. With the win, Mira Costa improved to 9-3 on the season. Macias and Hemelryck combined in another solid performance but didn’t get enough run support behind them. Macias got the loss and is now 4-2 on the season as South Hills is now 12-6. Brittney Amezquita went 3 for 4 with two RBI’s and Britney Rodriguez contributed going 2 for 4 with a double, homerun and three RBI’s.

SOFTBALL: KATELLA TOURNAMENT – POOL PLAY – SOUTH HILLS 14, ORANGE 1

Caitlyn Van Hemelryck and Sarah Macias each pitched two strong innings to lead the Huskies to the win. Van Hemelryck recorded the win and improved to 7-2. Kirsten Stewart went 1 for 3 and had a grand slam homerun with five RBI’s to lead the offense for South Hills. Lexi Robles went 2 for 2 with three RBI’s and Halayna De Abila also went 2 for 2 with two RBI’s.

BASEBALL: ANAHEIM LIONS TOURNAMENT – POOL PLAY – DIAMOND BAR 4, ORANGE 1

Diamond Bar senior Zach Pereyra pitched 6 1/2 strong innings to gain the victory and ups his season record to 3-0. Pereyra allowed one earned run on three walks and one strike out. Junior Conner Meade finished out the game to record his second save of the season as he allowed no runs on one hit and two strike outs and no walks. The Brahmas improved to 11-1 overall and Orange drops to 5-7. Sophomore left fielder Nolan Luzzi went 2 for 4 with two singles and two runs scored, while junior second baseman Zeph Walters went 3 for 3 with two doubles and a single with three RBI’s and one run scored.

SOFTBALL: SUBURBAN LEAGUE – LA MIRADA 3, NORWALK 2

The Matadores closed out a tight game against the Lancers with stellar defense.
Shelby Gomez made a throw to home plate from right field to force Norwalk’s potentially tying run out with two runners on base and one out. Amber Hickman closed out the game and got the win for La Mirada after pitching five innings and striking out five batters. Annie Dipillo held down the offensive side for the Matadores batting 3 for 3 and smacking two doubles. Norwalk slips to 0-2 in league with their two committed errors in the game while La Mirada climbs to 4-0 despite committing an error themselves.

BASEBALL: MONTVIEW LEAGUE – SIERRA VISTA 8, WORKMAN 0

The Dons handily defeated the Lobos behind great pitching. Andrew Luna hurled a complete game no-hitter with seven strikeouts to capture his second win of the season.
Sierra Vista shortstop, Giovanni Rivera, drove in three runs to round out the offense, which tallied 11 hits. Workman (0-10, 0-4) committed the only two errors of the game in dropping their tenth straight loss. The Dons improve to 9-3, 4-0.

BASEBALL: – DEL RIO LEAGUE – EL RANCHO 3, SANTA FE 2 (8 INNINGS)

El Rancho Luis Plascencia’s single in the top of the eighth inning broke a 2-2 tie and the Dons were able to survive a late rally by Santa Fe. El Rancho improves to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in league play, while Santa Fe drops to 2-8 and 1-4. Entering the fourth inning and down 1-0, the Dons’ Frank Vargas hit a 2-run homerun that put El Rancho ahead 2-1. That lead last until the bottom of the fifth when Santa Fe tied the score at 2 apiece on a pass ball which set up Plascencia heroics in the eighth. The Dons’ David Corrales leadoff the inning by singling to center. That brought to the plate, Kevin Rodriguez who hit into a fielder’s choice. With Rodriguez at first and one out, Rodriguez stole second. Vargas was intentionally walked. After Justin Gonzalez struck out, Plascencia hit a single to left scoring Rodriguez. El Rancho junior pitcher Joel Sanchez, who had entered the game in the sixth inning, forced the Chiefs’ to hit into a game-ending double play to preserve the win.
