BASEBALL: CIF-SS PLAYOFFS – DIVISION 3 – FIRST ROUND – LOS ALTOS 5, LAKESIDE 2

Los Altos advanced to the second round of the CIF-Southern Section playoffs and will play either Downey or Santa Monica next Tuesday. A coin flip will decide where the Conquerors will play. Los Altos’ Jayson De La Pea threw a four-hit complete game. Esteban Ortega lead the Conquerors with a two RBI double to give Los Altos the lead in the fifth inning.

BASEBALL: CIF-SS PLAYOFFS – DIVISION 5 – FIRST ROUND – SIERRA VISTA 8, NOTRE DAME (RIVERSIDE) 5

Sierra Vista rode the strong pitching performance of senior Giovanni Rivera who improved to 9-2 on the season as he went six innings. Rivera finished the game giving up nine hits, no walks and five strikeouts on three runs earned. Junior Jesus Terrazas came in to pitch the seventh to record his first save as the Dons (17-6) advance to play in the second round next Tuesday against the winner of Cathedral and Ontario Christian.
Notre Dame finished their 2012 campaign at 12-8. Leading the offense for the Dons was sophomore second baseman Chris Novelo who went 2 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs and two runs scored. Also, joining the hitting attack for Sierra Vista was senior left fielder Nick Herrejon who went 2 for 2 with two singles and three walks while scoring two runs. As a team, Sierra Vista pounded out eight hits while committing two errors.
The Titans jumped on Rivera early as they scored two runs in the top of the first inning; however, tat lead was short-lived. Herrejon lead off the bottom of the first for Sierra Vista by walking. Junior Oscar Huerta singled and the Dons were in busines as they had runners on second and first with no outs. Novelo followed with the first of his two doubles to right center that scored Herrejon and Huerta which tied the score at 2-2.
With Novelo at second and no outs, Rivera helped himself as he moved Novelo over to third on a sacrifice fly. Senior Macrin Gallardo’s followed Rivera with a sacrifice fly to deep right field that scored Novelo and the Dons went up 3-2 and Sierra Vista didn’t look back after that.

BASEBALL-CIF-SS-PLAYOFFS-DIVISION 2-FIRST ROUND-GLENDORA 11, ARLINGTON 5

Glendora scored early and often and outlasted Arlington in first round action.
Glendora put up four runs in the first inning and never looked back behind the pitching of Wyatt Wood and Scott Burke pitching 3 and 1/3 innings of shutout relief.
Leading the Tartans offensively was Martin Gallegos going 3 for 4 and D.J. Peters was 2 for 4 with four RBIs.

SOFTBALL-CIF-SS-PLAYOFFS-DIVISION 5-FIRST ROUND-MONTEBELLO 5, SILVERADO 0

Celeste Rodriguez improved to 8-2 and went the distance allowing three hits one walk and striking out two.
The Oilers (19-4) got all the offense required from April Marquez who went 2 for 3 with two runs scored, a RBI and a stolen base, Alyssa Soneff 1 for 3 with a double and Andrea Rocha went 1 for 3 with a run scored.
Melissa Thompson (2-3) went the distance for the Hawks striking out four and giving up eight hits.
Silverado dropped to 12-9 on the season.
