Is it too early to start talking high school football? As of today, it's t-minus 14 days on the 2006 season. Opening week starts off with a bang with Marmonte League power Moorpark at defending Southern Section champ Canyon on Thursday August 30.

In any other year, this would just be a good nonleague match-up. But with the new Southern Section playoff groupings, it could have important playoff implications later in the year. Gone are the numerical playoff divisions (I - XIII). The new playoff divisions will be the Pac-5, Southwest, Mid-Valley, Inland, Southeast, East Valley, Western, Eastern, Northeast, Northern, Southern, Central and Southwest.

At first glance, the Northern Division looks like one of the toughest, with schools from the Marmonte, Foothill, Channel, Pacific View and Pac-7 Leagues. There's probably about 8 teams from those leagues that could reasonably considered as contenders for the Northern Division championship, but let's just start with four: St. Bonaventure, Canyon, Valencia and Hart. Yikes! Then you add in perennially-tough teams like Moorpark, Royal, Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo, Westlake, Saugus, Camarillo, Rio Mesa, Westlake, Newbury Park and its hard to imagine any first-round games in this division being easy.

What do you think? Who'll win this Division? Is it too tough?

Or if that's too much for you to handle in the middle of August, who'll win on August 30? Who'll gain more yards: J.J. DiLuigi of Canyon? or Darrell Scott of Moorpark?

Canyon averaged 42 points a game last year. Moorpark only gave up 14 points a game. Something has to give...
