Chatsworth boys' VB coach retires, Sheriff takes over

Chatsworth head boys’ volleyball coach Greg Saltzberg has retired from coaching and will be replaced by Jonathan Sheriff.

Saltzberg announced his retirement Thursday, saying he decided to leave the program he coached since 2000 to focus on a different career path.

“I’m hanging them up and passing it up to someone else,” Saltzberg said. “I’m going to work for my father-in-law in the insurance business. I need to make money to take care of my family. I got to focus on my life change.”

Saltzberg said he helped lure Sheriff into taking over his position. Sheriff, who will also coach the lady Chancellors in the fall, met Saltzberg while coaching a girls’ club team that practices at Chatsworth. Sheriff has coached club teams for seven years. He had a two-year stint as the Reseda boys’ team coach in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

“All the chips fell in place,” Sherriff said. “I was applying for the girls’ position when Saltzberg asked if I would also be interested in coaching the boys.”

Under Saltzberg, Chatsworth won four consecutive City titles from 2002 through 2005 and reached the playoffs every season, including two four seminal appearances and a first round loss in his first season. He finished with a career 103-26 record including a 9-7 outing this season that ended with a semifinal loss to runner-up Taft of Woodland Hills.

“I’m going to comeback and check out games when I can,” Saltzberg said. “Who knows, maybe if I have time and my career is up and going, I’ll help out here and there. Am I done for ever? Time will tell.”
