HS HOOPS: Saugus seeks first league title in 25 years
Saugus is in position tonight to win a league title for first time since 1983, a dry spell that began in the Golden League before the Centurions joined the Foothill League in 1992. All visiting Saugus (20-4, 7-2) needs to do is defeat Hart in the finale.
“That would be true, and we’re happy for the opportunity, but we’re not going to be defined by this game,” Saugus coach Jeff Hallman said. “It’s an important game, but it’s not all about beating Hart. Had we lost the first game and defeated Hart in the last game, we’d be in the same position.”
The one bad omen for Saugus is the Centurions were in the exact same position three years ago, when Hart played spoiler with a victory in the 2004-2005 finale.
“Hart’s always tough, and I’m sure it’s going to be an emotional game,” Hallman said. “Mario Wright and Joey Dietrich have been real consistent and haved played well, but we’re not a team of stars. We just need to execute, do what we do and give it our best shot.”
