The Flintridge Prep of La Canada Flintridge boys' cross country team, ranked No. 2 in Southern Section Div. V, began its pursuit of a 17th consecutive Prep League title in solid fashion, holding off No. 3 Pasadena Poly 33-38 at Tuesday's first league meet on the demanding 3-mile Peninsula course.

Competing without injured senior standout Connor Verreaux, the Rebels relied on their depth, placing all five scoring runners in the top 10.

Daniel Silver won the race for Poly -- which finished third in the state last year, one spot ahead of Flintridge Prep -- in 17 minutes, 31 seconds. Chadwick of Rancho Palos Verdes' Scott Rodlitz was second in 17:34.

Paul Weitekamp (17:38) finished third for Flintridge Prep and was supported by Kevin Heintz (fifth, 17:55), James Lyon (seventh, 18:26), Daniel Lazier (eighth, 18:31) and Jason Bunn (10th, 18:45).

In the girls' meet, Chadwick -- No. 2 in Div. V -- took the top three spots to finish with 28 points, ahead of Mayfield of Pasadena (35). Flintridge Prep, No. 4 in Div. V, finished a distant third with 93 points, highlighted by Dot Silverman's fourth-place finish (22:07).
