Good showing for Foothill League boys in Ventura

The Saugus girls weren't the only runners setting records Friday at the Seaside Invitational at Sanbuenaventura State Beach in Ventura.

The Centurions boys' team complemented its female counterparts with two class victories, with junior Alec Nelson and senior Brandon Jauregui taking turns breaking the school record.

Nelson clocked 15 minutes, 7 seconds on the flat 3-mile layout to win the junior race and eclipse the program record of 15:36 held by Bryant Hinesly in 2004. Oak Park's James Goldstein, who defeated Nelson 15:31 to 15:53 in last year's sophomore race, finished second.

The record didn't last long, as Jauregui blocked out the pain of a sore Achilles to win the senior race in 15:03.

Hart of Newhall freshman Sam Peckham captured the ninth-grade race in 16:08 and Highland of Palmdale's Dylan Alexander took second in the sophomore race in 15:27, trailing Martin Luther King of Riverside's Lane Werley (15:18).
