Quartz Hill wins Hesperia volleyball tournament

The Quartz Hill girls volleyball team won the Hesperia tournament over the weekend. The Rebels defeated host Hesperia, 2-1, in the championship match. They beat Burroughs of Ridgecrest in the semifinals.
Kara Sherrard, a senior outside hitter for Quartz Hill, was the MVP of the tournament. Senior setter Nicky Tracy was selected to the all-tournament team.
Quartz Hill -- ranked No. 2 in Southern Section Div. III-AA -- opened its season with a five-game loss to Serrano. Sherrard had 37 kills against Serrano in the loss.
The next match for Quartz Hill is the Golden League opener against Palmdale, followed by a nonleague game against Paraclete on Wednesday, another Golden League game against Lancaster on Thursday and finally the Royal Tournament in Simi Valley on Saturday.
