Saugus sophomore runner Kaylin Mahoney is the recipient of the school year's first state girls' athlete of the week award by Cal-Hi Sports and ESPN/Rise Magazine.

Mahoney won the sophomore class race Sept. 12 at the Seaside Invitational in Ventura in 17 minutes, 6.87 seconds, the No. 2 mark in program history on the 3-mile Sanbuenaventura State Beach course and the fourth-fastest in meet history.

She also boasts a 4.55 GPA and was recently selected sophomore class queen for the school's Sept. 27 homecoming dance.

Mahoney will lead Saugus -- the nation's top-ranked team by the Mile Split Network and No. 3 according to Harrier Magazine -- in Saturday's 28th annual Woodbridge Cross Country Classic in Irvine, with the Centurions looking to capture their third consecutive girls' sweepstakes title. The last team to accomplish the feat was Murrieta Valley (2001-03).
