Best of the rest from a busy Saturday of running
If you didn't have the words "Saugus", "Crescenta Valley" or "Thousand Oaks" on your racing singlet, it might have been easy to be overlooked Saturday at either the Staub/Barnes Invitational or the Pepperdine Invitational.
Here's a quick look at some of the other highlights from a busy Saturday of racing across the state:
-- Hart of Newhall's Grace Zamudio (19:22) and Jordan Walsh (19:45) took first and second at the College Park Invitational in Oxnard, leading the Indians to the team victory with 35 points.
-- Also in Oxnard, Burroughs of Burbank's Western Nelson (15:43) finished second in the boys' race at the College Park Invitational, as the Indians were runner-up with 48 points.
-- Golden Valley's Seth Totten (15:49.69) was fifth in the Div. I boys' race at the Staub/Barnes Invitational, trailing Crescenta Valley's Zack Torres, Camarillo's Heyden Wooff and Saugus' Alec Nelson and Brandon Jauregui.
-- El Camino Real of Woodland Hills' Brett Schmitt (15:44.25) took sixth in the boys' sweepstakes race at the Pepperdine Invitational. Teammate Sean Padgett was 13th (16:09.64), with Burbank's Greg Dotson taking 12th (16:07.04).
-- Highland of Palmdale's Caylie Choate was the top female athlete outside of Saugus at the Staub/Barnes Invitational, taking fourth in Div. I in 18:26.23. West Ranch's Bailey Miller placed fifth (18:29.95) and Crescenta Valley's Michelle Callister (sixth, 18:37.74) and Carlotta Pham (eighth, 18:44.89) both cracked the top 10.
-- Flintridge Prep of La Canada Flintridge's Dot Silverman won the Div. III girls' race at the Staub/Barnes Invitational in 19:29.78.
-- Canyon's Anthony Pizzo finished ninth in the Div. I boys' race in 16:09.04, with teammate Thomas McGuan taking 12th (16:11.09).
-- Eastside of Lancaster's Steven Melena, coming off a strong showing Sept. 27 at the Stanford Invitational, took third in the boys' small school race (16:09.92) at the Pepperdine Invitational.
-- Moorpark's Christopher Coleman was second in the Div. II boys' race at the Staub/Barnes Invitational, clocking 16:42.23. Crespi of Encino's Willy MacMiller was third (16:57.22).
-- Valencia's Megan McDaniel (19:35.77) placed second in the Div. II girls' race at the Staub/Barnes Invitational, with La Canada's Holly Shreckengast (19:51.76) also under the 20-minute barrier.
-- Flintridge Sacred Heart of La Canada Flintridge's Erin Hartwig was fifth (20:04.08) for a short-handed Tologs' team in the girls' small-school race at the Pepperdine Invitational.
-- Emma Ramirez took 10th (20:03.00) and Jacquline Bowman (20:07.56) was right behind in 11th for Knight of Palmdale, which placed fourth in the girls' sweepstakes race at the Pepperdine Invitational.
-- Viewpoint of Calabasas freshman Nicki Maslan (20:30.40) placed ninth in the girls' small school race at the Pepperdine Invitational.
-- Reseda's Jetzabel Velazquez finished fourth overall at the Golden West Invitational in Visalia to lead the Regents to a second-place effort in the team competition with 75 points, trailing Clovis East (51). Velazquez clocked 20:12.2 on the 3-mile course.
-- Birmingham of Lake Balboa's Jenyffer Ortega recorded a mark of 19:33 to take fourth in the Div. I senior girls' race at the Warren Stauffer Invitational in South Gate.
