JC FOOTBALL: BIg First Half lifts COC

Fred Winborn rushed for a game-high 129 yards on 21 carries, scoring three first half touchdowns to lead College of the Canyons to a 52-29 Western State Conference victory over Ventura Saturday night at Cougar Stadium in Santa Clarita.

After Ventura (3-4, 0-3) took an early 7-0 lead when James Jackson returned a blocked punt 18 yards for a touchdown. But COC (8-0, 4-0) came roaring back, scoring 35 unanswered points.

Winborn scored on a pair of one-yard runs and from two yards out. Hayo Carpenter caught a pair of first half touchdown passes of 3 and 19 yards from Joey McClellan in the second quarter. McClellan completed 19 of 23 passes for 217 yards.

Taveon Burke returned the second half kickoff 91 yards for a score and Sean Quinn added a 13-yard scoring run in the third quarter.
