HS FOOT: Longshot for Canyon

| | Comments (0) |

After winning consecutive Southern Section Northern Division football championships in 2005 and 2006 - along with the 2006 CIF State Div. I Bowl championship - it looks like Canyon won't make the playoffs for the second consecutive season.

With no at-large spots in the Northern Division playoffs, Canyon (5-4, 2-2 in the Foothill League) must not only defeat first-place Saugus (6-3, 4-0) on Friday but hope Golden Valley (3-6, 0-4), which has never come within 21 points of a league victory in the school's three years in the league, defeats Hart (4-5, 2-2), which has qualified for the playoffs 24 years in a row.

"Our chances are pretty slim and none," second-year coach Chris Varner said.

In the meantime, Canyon quarterback Jordan Adamczyk has passed for 2,333 yards and 23 touchdowns, including four 300-yard performances and 16 touchdowns over the past six weeks.

"Jordan is by far the best quarterback in the (Santa Clarita) Valley. He's done really well," Varner said. "He's been contacted by Fresno State, Kansas State, Boise State, Idaho State and SDSU, and if one of them doesn't give him a scholarship, they're crazy.

"And you couldn't ask for a better kid - no attitude malfunctions, nothing like that. Just a straight shooter."
