Indians ran with plenty of Heart

One of the best performances Thursday at the Foothill League finals at Lake Castaic was turned in by the Hart of Newhall boys' team, which elevated from a pair of fifth-place finishes in the two regular-season meets to take second with 70 points behind three-time champion Saugus (34).

Led by Konrad Antoniuk's sixth-place finish (16:16) and Sam Peckham's ninth-place effort (16:22), the Indians -- who had all five scoring runners in the top 20 -- managed to finish ahead of Golden Valley (74), Canyon (87) and Valencia (92) to move into a third-place tie in the overall standings with Vikings with 10 points.

Hart's performance had Indians athletic director Linda Peckham and coach Larry David checking and double-checking their math to make sure the results were accurate, but the end result was Hart advancing to the Southern Section Div. II prelims based the better finish at the league finals, offsetting a pair of second-place results from Valencia during the regular season.
