Boys Basketball: Reseda coach Higgins should send a Thank You card to Taft coach Taylor

| | Comments (3) |

Reseda coach Keith Higgins might want to think about a phone call or letter to Taft coach Derrick Taylor.

Reseda recently won the City Section Division II championship and will play at top-seeded Thousand Oaks Tuesday in a Division II state Southern Regional game.

Reseda is 23-7 overall and has done it with the help of eight players who attended Taft before transferring to the Regents.

The players are: Randall Harris, Rasheem Harris, Ryan Watkins, Leon Fowler, Josh Durousseau, Filip Shaposhnik, Avri Clavelle and Josh Gorokhovsky.

The level of disrespect that Reseda is getting is beyond comprehension. Local newspapers such as the Daily News slander Reseda’s championships and coaching staff. Your recent article blatantly states that our basketball team members should be at Taft. It alludes to Reseda coaches taking students away from their respective schools as if we participate in illegal practices (everything that goes against CIF rules). No one questions the west valley’s athletic recruitment ethics. No one questions where Taft and Birmingham athletes reside. If you are a legitimate reporter, you will conduct a serious investigation. It would be nice to get a percentage, or actual true count as to where Taft and Birmingham athletes live. Take a look at all their athletes. How many of their actual athletes truly reside in Taft’s area (woodland hills), get bussed in, are admitted on open enrollment, or transfer from other schools? Where is their original school? Did they belong to Reseda or other schools in the valley or L.A. in general, and then return? Get a true count of all the Reseda athletes. Get a true count of students that live in Van Nuys that go to Birmingham. Are your allegations based on facts or favoritism? Granted, for many years the Daily News and Los Angeles Times have highlighted the accomplishments of the west valley league schools. However, the tides are turning, and Reseda will no longer live in the shadows of what was. The truth will come out. It will become evident who is giving their local students opportunities to excel based on their own efforts and the hard work of their respective coaches.

A hard working athletic department that invests time and effort in establishing a strong athletic program is what Reseda is all about .Yet, you don’t acknowledge our success like you would your favorite west valley darlings. We’ve won several city championships and get a bare mention in the newspaper. We accomplish getting two championships in girls’ soccer and boys’ basketball in one day, and instead of praising the hard work of our students, our staff’s integrity is called into question. We win two city championships (girl’s varsity and Jr. varsity cross country) and get two sentences in the paper. Where are your priorities? Where is the evidence of true journalism conducted with integrity and objectivity? As far as I can tell, it doesn’t exist.

You should also get your facts straight because Leon Fowler actually came from El Camino. We also have an individual city champion in Emerson Jimenez (wrestling ) –Where did he come from?
