Boys Basketball: Camacho to pull double duty

| | Comments (0) |

Bell-Jeff of Burbank's Bryan Camacho can add another title to the two he already holds at the tiny campus.

Camacho is the girls basketball coach and boys athletic director and now will be taking over the boys basketball program in a move that will surely spread his time even thinner than it already is.

Camacho is coming off a season in which he led the girls to the Southern Section Division V-A championship and a state Div. V championship.

"It is a great challenge that I am looking very forward too," Camacho said. "I have a great staff and we are going to do our very best for both programs."

Camacho replaces Eli Essa, who was let go after 14 years at the helm.

TRACK AND FIELD: Big day for Saugus seniors

| | Comments (0) |

Saugus might have celebrated its senior day last Thursday when the Centurions competed in their final regular-season home meet against Golden Valley, but Wednesday's performance at Hart was a showcase of the veteran leadership and production that led Saugus to a sweep of both Foothill League varsity track and field championships.

Josh Coefield won four events -- 100 (10.95), 200 (22.25), long jump (20-3 3/4) and anchoring the 400 relay (45.12) -- to lead the Centurions to a 102-34 victory, clinching the program's first Foothill League title after last winning a Golden League championship in 1986.

Brandon Jauregui remained unbeaten in league competition in the 1,600 and 3,200, battling Hart freshman Sam Peckham down to the wire in the 1,600, before prevailing 4:29.18 to 4:29.56. Just like his battle last Thursday with Golden Valley's Seth Totten, which was decided by 0.18, Jauregui and Peckham traded leads down the stretch before the senior held on by a couple of meters over the talented ninth-grader.

"It's the best feeling in the world. Undefeated in the mile," Jauregui said afterward.

Jauregui later cruised to a victory in the 3,200 in 10:00.9.

Daniel Swarbrick doubled in the shot put (59-11 3/4) and discus (161-6) and Shahan Khalighi triumphed in the 110 and 300 hurdles in 15.15 and 40.97.

In the girls' 107-29 victory, which secured a fourth consecutive Foothill League title, senior Anne Randall captured the 1,600 in 5:09 and Ashley Kramer won the 300 hurdles in 48.1. Kramer also led off both winning relays, with the 400 relay prevailing in 49.9 and the 1,600 -- also featuring senior Keri Molt -- in 4:12.

TRACK AND FIELD: 23 years later, Standley has golden touch

| | Comments (0) |

No one standing on the infield Wednesday at Hart High understood or appreciated the magnitude or significance of Saugus' Foothill League victory over the Indians more than Centurions coach Christian Standley.

In 1986, Standley was a freshman athlete on Saugus' track and field team, the last Centurions group to capture a league championship, albeit in the Golden League.

After returning to coach at Saugus in 2001 and enduring a couple of agonizing losses in pursuit of the program's first Foothill League title -- including last year's 72-64 loss to Hart at Saugus -- Standley finally received the victory dousing from the water bucket he had waited so many years to experience as the Centurions wrapped up an undefeated league season with a 102-34 triumph.

"(The victory shower) wasn't too uncomfortable," Standley said. "I'll gladly experience that if it means winning league."

The Saugus' girls' team atoned for losses in two previous trips to Hart by recording a 107-29 victory, secured its fourth consecutive championship.

"Those meets were still there in the back of my mind," Standley said. "It feels like we completed everything today."

Saugus distance coach Rene Paragas, a Hart alumnus, now boasts the distinction of guiding boys' and girls' varsity cross country teams as well as boys' and girls' varsity track and field teams to Foothill League titles.

"We made sure we celebrated really loud," Paragas said. "It's a very nice feeling. We're definitely going to enjoy it."

SWIMMING: Late rally propels Agoura girls past Thousand Oaks

| | Comments (0) |

The Agoura High girls' swim team demonstrated that it could be a factor at next week's Marmonte League championship meet and at the Southern Section Div. II finals May 16 by rallying for a 90-80 victory Wednesday over Thousand Oaks.

The Chargers won four of the final five events, including two from sophomore standout Shannyn Hultin, to defeat the Lancers, who received victories from Lauren Barnett in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles in 25.16 and 55.85 seconds.

Hultin began the comeback by capturing the 500 free (5:29.06), then led an Agoura sweep of the final three events with her victory in the 100 backstroke (1:03.91) after Thousand Oaks had won the 200 free relay (1:46.43).

Mariko Snyder secured the 100 breaststroke (1:13.89) -- her second victory following a 2:20.73 in the 200 individual medley -- to give the Chargers a four-point lead entering the 400 free relay.

Snyder, Christina Vournas, Savannah Fletcher and Hultin helped Agoura take two of the top three spots to secure the victory, building momentum into Friday's regular-season finale against Royal of Simi Valley.

Thousand Oaks continued its march to another boys' title with a 102-68 victory over Agoura. Henly Ko won the 100 free (50.22) and 200 IM (2:06.43) and David Armstrong doubled in the 50 free (23.38) and 100 butterfly (55.06) for the Lancers.

BOYS' GOLF: Valencia gets individual glory, West Ranch takes team title

| | Comments (0) |

Despite finishing in the middle of the pack Wednesday in the second round of the Newhall Land Cup at TPC Valencia, Max Homa prevailed in the season-long battle for Foothill League boys' golf individual glory over West Ranch's J.J. Holen.

Homa, competing for Valencia, finished with a cumulative total of 370, ahead of Holen's 373. Valencia's Alex Macaluso, Hart of Newhall's Tanner Diaz, Valencia's Jonathan Chang and West Ranch's Collin Wheeler also advanced to the Southern Section Northern Individual Regionals on May 18 at Sterling Hills Golf Course.

Wheeler won the Newhall Land Cup with a two-round score of 142, one stroke ahead of Holen.

West Ranch captured the Foothill League team title, with Valencia taking second and Hart third. All three teams will move on to the Southern Section Northern Team Regional on May 12 at Soule Park Golf Club.

SWIMMING: Hanson, Korth set records as Hart secures regular-season titles

| | Comments (0) |

About the only question for Hart in Wednesday's regular-season finale against Saugus was which of its swimmers would touch the wall first?

Hart's girls took first and second in 10 of 11 events -- with only Saugus' Katy Sonksen taking runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle -- and the Indians boys' team swept the top two spots in eight races, as both teams finished with unbeaten Foothill League records.

In the girls' competition, Hart received a school-record performance from Maggie Hanson in the 200 free en route to a 135-35 victory at Santa Clarita Aquatic Center to secure at least a share of its 27th consecutive league championship.

Led by Nick Korth lowering his own school record in the 100 breaststroke, the Hart boys extended their league unbeaten streak to 67 in a row, guaranteeing themselves no worse than a share of their 13th straight league title with a 130-40 victory over the Centurions.

In her final tuneup before Tuesday's league prelims, Hanson clocked 1 minute, 54.07 in the 200 free to break the mark set last year by teammate Jordan Danny (1:54.84). Hanson also won the 100 backstroke (1:01.62), with Danny doubling in the 100 butterfly (58.71) and 100 breaststroke (1:03.45).

Chelsea Griffiths swept the 50 and 100 frees for the Indians (7-0, 5-0), clocking 24.98 and 54.20.

Korth, who set the breaststroke record last year with a mark of 58.03, impressed with a 57.59 performance to finish ahead of teammate Chris Weber (59.88). Weber got Korth in the 100 butterfly by a 53.05 to 54.54 margin.

Andrew Skvarna doubled in the 50 and 100 frees in 22.94 and 50.74 for Hart (8-0, 5-0), which received victories from Konrad Antoniuk in the 200 free (1:46.78) and 500 free (4:48.39). Alex Ngan captured the 100 backstroke (56.26) and 200 individual medley (2:04.04) for the Indians.

Kelli Miller (200 IM) and Hayley Good (500 free) rounded out the list of winners for the Hart girls.

Boys Basketball: Rebibo turns down Newbury Park

| | Comments (0) |

El Camino Real of Woodland Hills boys basketball coach David Rebibo is not going anywhere.

Rebibo confirmed via text message he was offered the position at Newbury Park but turned it down to remain at El Camino Real.

Rebibo has changed the culture of the program in his first two seasons because of his enthusiastic attitude and great support from the administration.

"It was a tough decision but we have done a lot of good things here and I wanted to see things through," Rebibo said. "I couldn't leave the kids who have worked so hard and are excited about next year."

The Conquistadores return Corey Ingram and Keith Dawkins as players to build around and also picked up transfer Dushon Carter from Renaissance Academy of La Canada.

Carter attended Taft of Woodland Hills and Reseda his first two years before leading Renaissance in scoring last season.

Now the question is where does Newbury Park go from here.

The school could offer the position to former Thousand Oaks player Kyle Kegley.

Other names that have come up in coaching circles are Jeff Perrault, Ed Chevalier and Gary Grayson.

It is believed that Jeff Young, Terry Kelly, and Rob Bloom are not candidates any longer or never were.

The Beginnings of Lacrosse, Part 2

| | Comments (0) |

In Tuesday's paper, there was an article about the start of lacrosse in the San Fernando Valley. Geoff Seibold, Dr. Mike Spagnoli, Leon Bennett and James Felber were mentioned as being instrumental.
Unfortuately, not everyone involved were named at the time, but another very important contributor to the start of the area lacrosse was Bill Adams, who was one of the coaches of the early teams as well as an important influence early.

The News regrets the omission of Adams and of others who weren't named by name at that time.

KNIGHTS WIN 16th BEHIND PITCHER JOSH GOOSSEN-BROWN & SHORT STOP RANNY LOWE

Maybe you can go home again, but as a baseball pitcher you can't record the
win & the save in the same game, even if you earn both. Just ask Josh
Goossen-Brown.

RHP Josh Goossen-Brown started the game completing 6 innings (1 Run,3
Hits,5K's, 0 BB) before moving to 3rd base with a 3-1 lead. RHP David
Armendariz came in to close. However, as fate would have it, a walk & two
hits later, the score was now 3-2, with no outs, the tying run on 3rd, and
the go ahead on 1st.

Goossen-Brown was then asked to retake the mound & two pitches later the
game was over, with the Knights pocketing their 16th win. Josh's first pitch
produced a 4-4-3 double play (nicely crafted by 2nd baseman Casey Ryan while
holding the runner at 3rd). His second pitch produced a ground out to first.

Josh employed a trade mark, picking a runner off second in the 6th. He and
1st Baseman Kelly Dugan also engineered two nice plays at first base, via
tricky ground balls each fielded and tossed to the other for the out.

For Chaminade RHP Will Tessar went 5.2 innings. All three Knights runs were
his. Will was relieved by Mat Troupe. Tessar had Chaminades only extra base
hit (a double). Troupe and Greg Goshgarian had one RBI each.

The Knights offense was led by short-stop Ranny Lowe, who was 3 for 3,
producing two of the teams three RBI's, including a solo home run to left.
Meanwhile, Kelly Dugan was 3 for 4 with a double, Nick LaFace 2 for 3, and
Eric Walbridge 2 for 4, with an RBI.

As for that win and save, rules allow a high school pitcher to record one or
the other. Josh has recorded the win (6 Wins, 2 Losses, 2 Saves).

The Knights (16-4 Overall, 6-1 Mission League) will play the second of two
games with Chaminade @ home this Friday May 1st at 3:45pm.

Boys Basketball: Chaminade has star in the making

| | Comments (0) |

Chaminade of West Hills may have a player to replace Long Beach St.-bound Jules Montgomery next year.

Gilles Dierickx is an intriguing prospect that is developing rapidly according to coach Todd Wolfson.

Wolfson sent over some useful information on his budding star.

Name: Gilles Dierickx
Born: Ghent, Belgium

Height: 6'9 ½

Weight: 185

School: Chaminade

Club Team: Team Chandler

Current Grade: 10th

Gilles is emerging as a true talent. He has only been in the United States for 4 months and has been to Denver and Las Vegas at basketball tournaments. He chose to come to America to try and improve his game and to play basketball in college. Gilles has a very good jump shot and is improving on his inside game (dunking with ease). He is slender like Jules Montgomery but is currently working out in the weight room every day. Gilles has already gained 15 pounds in these 4 months, and we are excited about next season and what he brings to Chaminade Basketball.

Boys Basketball: Collision All-Star Game a real barn-burner

| | Comments (0) |

Sylmar's Tyler Honeycutt couldn't lead the Spartans to an outirght Valley Mission League championship or past the second round of the City Section playoffs this past season but he came through for the City Section all-stars in the Collision game at El Camino College in Torrance on Saturday.

Honeycutt scored 39 points on nine for 10 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the City Section in a 113-109 victory over its counterparts from the Southern Section.

Honeycutt was named M.V.P.

The City led by as many as 23 points in the first half and 17 in the second but saw its lead vanish when the Southern Section went ahead 109-108 with 1:55 remaining.

Taft's Justin Hawkins made a 3-pointer to put the City back on top and it hung on for a very entertaining victory according to many in attendance.

Taft's Michael Williams, the Daily News Player of the Year, scored 16 points with four 3-pointers for the City Section team.

Texas-bound Jordan Hamilton poured in 39 points to lead the Southern Section.

Hamilton didn't play during the high school season because he was not granted a fifth year of eligibility by Southern Section officials back in November.

Boys Basketball: Area Job Updates

| | Comments (0) |

Now that Campbell Hall of North Hollywood has hired a coach focus can begin on other area schools looking to make hires in the next few weeks.

Newbury Park will interview former Campbell Hall head man Terry Kelly on Monday. Other candidates could include former Chaminade coach Jeff Young, Buckley of Sherman Oaks assistant Shad Nichols, former North Hollywood coach Rob Bloom and former Crespi athletic director Dick Dornan.

Monroe of North Hills is down to four people according to sources although that number might actually be three after an assistant at Chaminade has been deemed to young to receive the job.

The administration is deciding between former St. Genevieve coach Kimo Atkins, Belmont of Los Angeles coach Patrick Mariano and Buckley assistant Shad Nichols.

Stay tuned for further developments on the two jobs.

Other jobs still open and not close to selecting a new coach are L.A. Baptist, Bell-Jeff and Burroughs of Burbank.

Boys Basketball: Campbell Hall hires Steve Wachs

| | Comments (0) |

What a difference 24 hours can make.

After being told he didn't have enough high school experience on Thursday, Steve Wachs was offered the Campbell Hall of North Hollywood boys basketball position and has accpeted according to athletic director Juan Velasquez.

Speculation arose that Derrick Taylor of Taft would be the new coach and Taylor said he was offered the job but declined when he and the school could not come to agreement on some issues.

Velasquez said no one was offered the job formally but discussions were held with all three candidates.

Wachs has been an assistant at Loyola Marymount, Cal Poly Pomona and coached at Brentwood of Los Angeles last season.

"No one was offered the job," Velasquez said. "We made a decision this morning. Things changed and we offered the job to Steve."

Boys basketball: Taft's Taylor declines Campbell Hall job

| | Comments (0) |

In a stunning development Friday morning, Taft of Woodland Hills coach Derrick Taylor turned down the Campbell Hall of North Hollywood coaching position to remain at Taft.

Taylor said it was an agonizing decision but ultimately decided to stay at Taft because of everything he has built at the school was too much to leave right now.

"I was honored and thankful Campbell Hall thought highly of me and offered me the postion," Taylor said. "I just couldn't leave Taft at this point. I really enjoyed the process at Campbell Hall and was very close to making the transition."

Taylor should have a teriffic team next year with De'Andre Daniels and Bryce Jones eligible after sitting out last season. Daniels and Jones will join Landon Drew, Sam Natt, Pierson Williams and Domonique Evans to give Taft one of the most feared lineups behind Westchester of Los Angeles.

Campbell Hall is expected to offer the position to Birmingham of Lake Balboa's Jarvis Turner, a former player at USC.

Campbell Hall already excluded Brentwood coach Steve Wachs on Thursday with its sights set on Taylor accepting the position Friday.

Speculation for the past several weeks also has star point guard Austin McBroom leaving the school in the wake of Terry Kelly's resignation two months ago.

McBroom has been linked to a possible transfer to a marmonte League school or to a high desert area school in the Antelope Valley. McBroom resides in Lancaster.

TRACK AND FIELD: Royal's Garner clears significant hurdle, but Moorpark wins title

| | Comments (0) |

Royal of Simi Valley's Thomas Garner broke a 34-year-old Marmonte League record Thursday at Moorpark High, clocking 14.20 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles.

He also prevailed in the 300 hurdles (40.59) and the long jump (21-2 1/4) to remain unbeaten in dual meets this season, but it wasn't enough for the Highlanders to knock off Moorpark, which clinched the league title with a 71-65 victory.

Garner's effort broke the 1975 mark of 14.3 held by Tom McDonald.

Moorpark's Maxwell Dyce, who clocked a state-leading 10.51 in the 100 on Saturday at the Mt. SAC Relays, won the 200 (21.88) and 400 (52.47) for the Musketeers.

Royal's Travis Edwards set himself up well for a big night May 1 at the Ventura County Championships, winning the 800 (2:00.05) and 1,600 (4:25.32).

TRACK AND FIELD: Lakers can't get it done, but these Foothill League athletes came up clutch

| | Comments (0) |

Although the Lakers couldn't get it done in crunch time Thursday night in Utah, the following Foothill League track and field athletes delivered in a big way for their teams (these are only based on results reported to or obtained by the Daily News):

Brandon Jauregui, Saugus -- Twice overcame deficits in the final 100 meters to defeat Golden Valley's Seth Totten in the 1,600 by a 4:29.94 to 4:30.12 margin. Jauregui clocked a 61-second last lap to prevail in a rematch of the Foothill League cross country final, won in similar down-to-the-wire fashion. Jauregui returned to run a 2:01.0 in the 800 to take second to Golden Valley's Gabe Vazquez (2:00.3).

Aly Drake, Valencia -- Despite running unchallenged the final 600 of what appears to be the last 1,600 of her high school career, Drake broke Ana DiGiallonardo's program record by nearly six seconds to clock 5:05.9 at West Ranch, making her a threat at any distance from 200 to 1,600 at league finals, although she's expected to concentrate on the 800. Drake also anchored Valencia's 1,600 relay (4:02.52) in 59 seconds, again without competition.

Anne Randall, Saugus -- Produced perhaps the most impressive distance double by a female runner in the Foothill League this year, clocking 4:57.83 in the 1,600 -- challenging 4:48 pace through 1,200 -- and returning with a 10:59.12 in the 3,200. Randall just missed her 1,600 personal-best of 4:57.12 set at last year's Southern Section Div. I prelims.

Jennifer Owen, West Ranch -- With Valencia's Linnea Herren right on her heels through 600 meters of the 800, the sophomore pulled away down the stretch to win in 2:17.97, her best mark in an open 800 race (she clocked 2:17 on a 4 x 800 relay earlier this season). Too bad a showdown with Aly Drake never materialized.

Taylor Thomas, Canyon -- Saugus' Ashley Kramer will provide a challenge at Foothill League finals, but for now the freshman is the front-runner to win titles in the 100 and 300 hurdles. Thomas ran a personal-best 15.0 in the 100 and added a 49.5 in the 300.

Lauren Hackney, Golden Valley -- The race for the girls' 400-meter title in the Foothill League could be one of the best this postseason and Hackney certainly placed herself among the contenders by holding off Saugus' Alex Hampton 58.88 to 59.0. (note: Hampton returned to produced a 58.5 anchor on Saugus' school-record 1,600 relay effort of 4:01.45).

Jack Carey, West Ranch -- By popular demand, Carey makes an appearance on the list with an impressive final lap to close a 10-meter gap on Valencia's Andrew Berumen and win the 1,600 with a huge kick at the end to prevail 4:40.3 to 4:40.8.

Anthony Pizzo, Canyon -- After being hit by a car on his bike ride to the bus, ran a courageous race in the 3,200 to win in 9:36.3, holding off Hart's Sam Peckham, who was competing at the freshman/sophomore level.

Matt Harmon, West Ranch -- Lowered his league-leading mark in the 110 hurdles to 14.26 and added a 41.23 in the 300 hurdles against Valencia.

Faith Anumba, Valencia -- This girl can get it done on the basketball court and in track and field, running a wind-aided 12.02 in the 100 and leading off the Vikings' 49.19 effort in the 400 relay, along with a 4-8 high jump and a 16-10 1/2 long jump.

Cody Cox, West Ranch -- Delivered program records of 6-1 in the high jump and 20-1 in the long jump, in addition to anchoring the Wildcats' 400 relay to a victory in 42.91.

Tiffini Stone, Canyon -- Continued to position herself for a possible sweep of the long and triple jump titles at league finals with efforts of 16-7 1/2 and 33-9 against Hart.

Ted Glasnow, Hart -- One of the few highlights for the Indians against Canyon, the senior matched his personal best by clearing 6-4 in the high jump and put up the Foothill League's No. 2 mark this season in the triple jump (42-10 1/2).

Marissa Yabko, West Ranch -- After jumping three hurdles for practice Wednesday, Yabko won her first varsity 300 hurdles event against Valencia, clocking 50.99. Talk about a fast learner.

Hart's Pat Valaika hit a grand slam Wednesday -- Hart's first regular-season grand slam since the opening game of 2003 -- but it was not enough in an 18-10 loss to Valencia.

Boys Basketball: Campbell Hall Job Update

| | Comments (0) |

Apparently it is down to two people for the next coach at Campbell Hall of North Hollywood.

Steve Wachs, a former assistant at Loyola Marymount and current coach at Brentwood of Los Angeles was told the school was going with someone with more experience.

Presumably on the high school level.

The job will come down to either Taft's Derrick Taylor or Birmingham's Jarvis Turner.

An announcement could come as soon as Friday afternoon.

Stay tuned...

Baseball: Notre Dame recap from Tuesday

| | Comments (0) |

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame senior catcher Nick La Face broke open a 7-6 Notre Dame lead with a grand slam home run in the 5th inning to put away Harvard-Westlake of North Hollywood for good Tuesday afternoon. La Face was 2 for 4 with five RBI's and he won the Anderson Bat National Classic Home Run Derby last week at El Dorado High School in Placentia, CA.

Senior RHP Josh Goossen-Brown picked up the win giving up six hits and four earned runs over six innings.

HS BASE: Lopes on pace to break Valencia home run record

| | Comments (0) |

Valencia sophomore Christian Lopes already has 18 home runs in 39 career games (10 last year and eight so far this season), which means the youngster is well on pace to break Jared Clark's 2004 career school record of 23 -- possibly sooner rather than later if Lopes get hot at the end of the year as he did last season.

Meantime, Lopes' freshman brother Timmy Lopes hit a grand-slam in his first varsity at bat Friday in a victory over Canyon.

In more Valencia news, outfielder R.J. Mundell has committed to Chapman.

HS FOOT: 14 offers and counting for Oaks Christian QB Montana

| | Comments (0) |

It's hard to remember a local prep quarterback with as many early scholarship offers as Oaks Christian quarterback Nick Montana, who already has 14 DI offers heading into his senior year next season.

Among those bidding for Montana's services are Notre Dame, Ohio State, Florida State, LSU, Nebraska and Stanford. Interestingly, USC and UCLA have yet to pull the trigger.

Montana is the son of NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana, so there is plenty of value in the Montana name. As a junior, the son passed for 2,052 yards (55.2 pct.) and 33 TDs with just seven INTs. He also rushed for three TDs, as Oaks Christian finished 14-0 and won its record sixth consecutive Southern Section championship.

TRACK AND FIELD: Best of the rest Friday night at Mt. SAC

| |

Although the Saugus girls' 4 x 1,600 relay team produced the only victory among local female athletes Friday at the 51st Mt. SAC Relays, there were plenty of other notable performances at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.

West Ranch's Jennifer Owen -- victorious Thursday against Saugus in the 1,600 -- produced an impressive double, taking third (10:57.46) behind Arroyo Grande's Karlee Owens (10:48.05) and Saugus' Brianna Jauregui (10:52.35) in the 3,200, then contributing to the Wildcats' fourth-place 4 x 800 relay team (9:38.17), just off their area-leading mark of 9:36.05. Taft of Woodland Hills took seventh (9:54.06).

Quartz Hill's Andrew Fletcher captured the boys' open pole vault by clearing 14 feet.

Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta's Zack Torres took third in the invitational 1,600 as the top three runners were all separated by less than a second. Rancho Buena Vista's Collin Jarvis continued his momentum following last week's 3,200 effort at the Arcadia Invitational by winning in 4:14.19, with Leduc's Carl Roberson (4:14.32) and Torres (4:14.51) right behind. Knight of Palmdale's Uriel Aquino was fifth (4:15.60) and brother Ulises Aquino took eighth (4:19.83).

Harvard-Westlake of Studio City's Andrew Tobias qualified fourth in the seeded triple jump prelims (42-1 1/4) and the Wolverines' 4 x 800 relay team, with a strong anchor from Chris Cheng, finished fifth (7:57.66). Royal of Simi Valley placed seventh (7:59.98), as Dana Hills of Dana Point lowered its national-leading time to 7:40.30.

Royal also took eighth in the boys' 4 x 1,600 relay (17:53.89), with Loyola of Los Angeles -- behind a 4:13.2 anchor leg from Elias Gedyon -- winning in 17:35.88.

Crescenta Valley ran fifth in the girls' 4 x 1,600 relay (21:53.14).

Rio Mesa of Oxnard's Mariyah Lee qualified third in the open long jump prelims (16-8 1/2) and teammate Riley Nizdil qualified seventh in the open triple jump (35-2). Thousand Oaks' Meredith Bell qualified third at 35-8 and teammate Samantha Rivera was fifth (35-3), with teammate Bailey Schentrup (15-8 1/2) and Rivera (15-7) moving on in the long jump.

Paraclete of Lancaster's Siera Hearne (37-5 1/4) and West Ranch's Breeann Braucher (36-9 1/2) advanced in the open shot put.

Lancaster's Bertrell Hall took second in the boys' open high jump (6-4) and qualified third in the open triple jump prelims (43-1 1/4).

TRACK AND FIELD: Saugus great at Mt. SAC, Centurions on verge of more greatness

| | Comments (0) |

From Brianna Jauregui, Courtney Wilson and Merissa Kado's impressive performances in the invitational 3,200 to Danielle Hernando's courageous 1,600 double 90 minutes apart to Stephanie Bulder's exceptional 5:01.9 anchor on the 4 x 1,600 relay, Saugus' stars shined under the lights Friday at the 51st Mt. SAC Relays.

Jauregui, a day removed from running 11:25.37 in the 3,200 in Saugus' dual meet against West Ranch and with a season best of 11:18.73 on April 4 at the Trabuco Hills Invitational, clocked a PR of 10:52.35 to take second behind Arroyo Grane's Karlee Owens (10:48.05).

Jauregui, who closed the last two laps in 77 and 76, improved upon her personal-record 11:04 and gave the Centurions four girls under 11 minutes in the 3,200. Anne Randall (10:39.30) and Bulder (10:45.40) both rank among the top 10 in the state, with Amber Mirakami (10:47.40) -- sidelined with a sore hip -- giving Saugus three in the top dozen and Jauregui now making it four in the top 19.

Factor in PRs from Wilson (11:07.12), who took sixth, and Kado (11:12.75), who placed eighth, not to mention Karis Frankian -- who clocked 11:12.40 at the Arcadia Invitational -- and that's a potential seven girls who could be under 11 minutes by season's end.

And that doesn't even include Kaylin Mahoney, who was third in the state last year at 3,200 with a program-record 10:25.40. Mahoney won the 3,200 in 11:24.75 at the West Ranch dual meet Thursday and returned with a 5:10.4 opening leg of the 4 x 1,600 relay Friday.

According to Dyestatcal.com editors Rich Gonzalez and Doug Speck, it is believed that no team in California history has ever had five girls run faster than 11 minutes in the 3,200 in the same season.

Saugus also has 10 girls in the 1,600 at 5:20 or better, with Hernando finishing fourth in the invitational race in a PR of 5:06.55 and Frankian delivering a PR of 5:12.5 on the second leg of the relay, which won in 20:45.61, ahead of Australia's Ruyton Girls' School (20:45.72).

The boys from Saugus also delivered a program record Friday in the 4 x 1,600 relay, with Brandon Jauregui, Alex Ruther, Camden McAlister and Alec Nelson finishing 10th in 18:03.47. Ruther's reported split was 4:25, with Jauregui clocking 4:27 and Nelson 4:29 on the anchor.

TRACK AND FIELD: Quick highlights from Saugus vs. West Ranch meet

| | Comments (0) |

Since the information is likely to get lost in the shuffle in the daily prep roundup, especially when searching for it online, here's a quick recap of the Saugus vs. West Ranch dual meet.

GIRLS
Saugus 94, West Ranch 42: Jennifer Owen managed to secure a victory over the Centurions in the 1,600 (5:24.19), outkicking Stephanie Bulder (5:25.22) and Anne Randall (5:26.50) on the final lap after a pedestrian first 1,200, but it was one of only two wins on the track for the Wildcats -- the other in an uncontested 1,600 relay -- in the Foothill League loss.

Randall returned to win the 800 (2:20.84) and Bulder captured the 3,200 (11:24.75) -- leading a sweep with Kaylin Mahoney (11:24.97) and Brianna Jauregui (11:25.37) -- for Saugus, which received wins from Alex Hampton (400), Jamie Molacek (100) and Amber Wright (200).

Ashley Kramer doubled in the 100 (16.31) and 300 hurdles (50.65) and ran a leg on the victorious 400 relay (50.94) for the Centurions, who received a personal-best 33-6 1/2 in the triple jump from Erin Ortega.

Kayley Braucher won the long jump (15-10) and discus throw (114-5) and was third in the triple jump (29-11 1/2) for the Wildcats.

BOYS
Saugus 88, West Ranch 48: Josh Coefield captured the 100 (10.78), 200 (21.97) and long jump (20-3) for the Centurions in the Foothill League win.

Brandon Jauregui doubled in the 800 (2:02.06) and 1,600 (4:36.19), as did Daniel Swarbrick in the shot put (57-1) and discus (171-5 1/2) for Saugus.

West Ranch's Matt Harmon swept the hurdles, taking the 110 in 14.83 and 300 in 40.12. Ross Bacon won the 400 (52.91) and ran legs on both winning relays for the Wildcats, but was outleaned by Coefield in the 200.

TRACK AND FIELD: Looking forward in the Foothill League

| | Comments (0) |

Following Thursday's competition, the Foothill League moved past the halfway point of its dual-meet schedule and continued to demonstrate why it boasts the best collection of girls' teams in the area and showed that it also deserves to be mentioned with the Mission and Marmonte leagues when it comes to top boys' depth as well.

With two weeks left in the regular season before the May 5 prelims and May 8 championship meet at College of the Canyons, here are some of the possible head-to-head matchups (should they materialize) to look forward to in the upcoming dual meets:

April 23

Valencia at West Ranch
Valencia's Aly Drake vs. West Ranch's Jennifer Owen, Ashley Welker and Bailey Miller -- Drake has proven to be the most formidable middle distance runner in the league this season, with marks of 58.4 in the 400 and 2:12.50 in the 800. Before Thursday, Drake was the only girl to score points against Saugus' talented distance corps. West Ranch's trio managed nine in the 800 and 1,600. Drake could have to take on the entire trio in the 800, should she compete in the event after invitational races in consecutive weekends.

West Ranch's Ross Bacon vs. Valencia's Zach Tartabull -- The best of the battles should come in the 200, but they could also square off in the 400 in an attempt to gain early bragging rights before league finals.

Canyon at Hart
Canyon's Anthony Pizzo and Tommy McGuan vs. Hart's Sam Peckham and Anthony Soto -- Part of the laundry list of challengers for league supremacy in the 1,600 and 3,200, this will be another good tuneup for the athletes with showdowns against Valencia's Falco DiGiallonardo, Golden Valley's Seth Totten and Saugus' Brandon Jauregui and Alec Nelson in May.

Hart's Ted Glasnow vs. Canyon's Harrison Hall, Kevin Enge and Cody Moore -- Glasnow has quietly established himself as one of the league's top jumpers, but he'll be facing three of his toughest opponents, with Hall excelling in the long and triple, while Enge and Moore will push him in the high jump.

Golden Valley at Saugus
Golden Valley's Seth Totten vs. Saugus' Brandon Jauregui and Alec Nelson -- Totten believes he has a little unfinished business from the league cross country final after Jauregui beat him in a near photo finish. Expect the 1,600 clash to be one of the season's best, with Nelson possibly playing the role of spoiler, having also defeated Totten during the regular season in the fall.

Golden Valley's Lauren Hackney vs. Saugus' Amber Wright and Alex Hampton -- This will be the Grizzlies best opportunity to steal away points on the track, since Saugus should sweep all three distance events. Hackney has produced strong efforts in the 200 and 400, but Wright and Hampton have been explosive at times for the Centurions.

April 30

Saugus at Hart
Hart's Sam Peckham and Anthony Soto vs. Saugus' Brandon Jauregui, Alec Nelson and Alex Ruther -- With the boys' league championship possibly at stake, the outcome could be decided on the distance events and Saugus will need every point it can muster to capture its first title since 1986. Expect Jauregui to pull off another triple similar to his performance against Canyon if it means the Centurions wearing the crown.

Saugus' Josh Coefield vs. Hart's Ted Glasnow -- Coefield produced an effort of 20-3 in the long jump against West Ranch, which means Glasnow (season-best of 20-7) will have to be at his best to prevail.

Valencia at Canyon
Valencia's Jasmine Hall vs. Canyon's Layana White -- With both athletes having cleared 5-4, who will set the bar higher in the high jump in the final tuneup before league finals? The two could also square off in the 200, where Hall has a clearer advantage. Hall might also have to contest with Canyon's Tiffini Stone in the long jump.

Canyon's Darius Rudolph and Chris Rivas vs. Valencia's Zach Tartabull and Malcom Flowers -- Important points could be at stake when these four square off. Rudolph has the edge in the 100, but the 200 and 400 are anyone's guess.

Golden Valley at West Ranch
Golden Valley's Lauren Nygren vs. West Ranch's Jennifer Owen, Ashley Welker and Bailey Miller -- Nygren is coming off her best performance of the season against Canyon, but she'll get a true gauge as to where she stands entering league prelims by racing West Ranch's talented trio in the 800 and 1,600.

Golden Valley's Lauren Hackney vs. West Ranch's Kylie Long -- Both darkhorse contenders for the league title in the 400, one will gain some timely confidence heading into the prelims, with possible showdowns awaiting against Saugus' Alex Hampton and perhaps Valencia's Aly Drake or Jasmine Hall.

Baseball: Ortiz still in majors

| | Comments (0) |

Former Montclair Prep standout Russ Ortiz made the Houston Astros after a solid spring.

Ortiz is the teams fifth starter and can be a long reliever out of the bullpen.

Ortiz is scheduled to start Thursday in Pittsburgh.

Ortiz was one of the best starters in the National League several years ago but quickly lost effectiveness for some reason.

Ortiz graduated from Montclair Prep in 1992, played college baseball at Oklahoma and was a fourth round pick by the San Francisco Giants in 1995.

Thousand Oaks Softball

We ran out of room in the newspaper for the full box scores of the Thousand Oaks games, so here are the results from their two games tonight.

The Lancers played twice in the Best of the West Tournament and won both. In the first round game, they beat Lompoc 8-4 with Josie Tressel starting, leaving, then returning and winning the game as the pitcher. Alysha Payne hitting two doubles and Taylor Yamek one to lead the offense.

In game two, the Lancers beat Whitney High School of Rocklin (a suburb of Sacramento) 7-3 in a darkness-shortened, five-inning game. Yamek won the game as the pitcher and had another double, while Sophie Airington and Kaelee Nelson had triples.

Thousand Oaks play two more games in the Tournament Tuesday and once more Wednesday.

Boys Basketball: Campbell Hall Job Update

| | Comments (0) |

According to several sources, Campbell Hall of North Hollywood is closing in on hiring its new basketball coach.

An announcement could come as early as the end of the month.

Speculation has arisen that Reggie Morris (Leuzinger of Lawndale), Derrick Taylor (Taft), Jarvis Turner (Birmingham) and Pooh Richardson (former UCLA and NBA star) are the final four candidates.

In fact, Morris may have been on campus Monday demonstrating a practice session to certain administrators.

Stay tuned...

TRACK AND FIELD: Dynamite dozen local performers at the Arcadia Invitational

| | Comments (0) |

In the spirit of Easter Sunday and Easter Egg hunts, here's a look back at a dozen top performers (including relays and athletes from the same event) from the 42nd Arcadia Invitational, a two-day showcase Friday and Saturday at Arcadia High:

12. Sarah Pearson, La Reina, Jr. -- It was a busy schedule for Pearson, who ran in the seeded mile, then anchored the Regents' distance medley relay, which finished 15th in 12:26.93. Pearson's seventh-place effort of 5:02.65 in the mile converts to a 1,600-meter mark of around 5:01.3, which would be a personal-best performance.

11. Jules Sharpe, Oaks Christian, Sr. -- Another year, another top-three finish in the high jump for the Stanford signee. Sharpe had three clearances of at least 7 feet entering the meet, but only jumped 6-9, as Vista Murrieta's Nick Ross defended his title by clearing 7 feet, well off his national-leading mark of 7-3.

T10. Heyden Wooff, Camarillo, Soph., and Western Nelson, Burroughs, Sr. -- The duo occupied the Nos. 3 and 4 spots in the boys' open 3,200 Friday night, clocking season-bests of 9:14.45 and 9:15.61. The marks would've cracked the top 25 in the invitational race Saturday.

9. Melanise Chapman, Paraclete, Sr. -- Chapman had to run in Saturday's day session to get a chance to compete in the seeded races at night, but she made the most of her opportunities by clocking 12.10 in the 100 and 24.89 in the 200 to qualify in both events. Chapman couldn't sustain the momentum, running 12.29 and 24.96 in the evening, but her efforts showed she's on her way back from being sidelined with a sore left hamstring. Chapman's teammate Mariah Gibson continued her strong efforts in the high jump by clearing 5-5 and just missing at 5-7 to take third during the day session.

8. Maxwell Dyce, Moorpark, Sr. -- Although he ran a wind-aided 10.53 in the 100-meter dash to win the season-opening Don Green Invitational, Dyce's 10.76 was enough to win the invitational sprint. Dyce's performance came as part of a five-runner field, as two of the state's best, Cathedral's Randall Carroll and Rancho Cucamonga's Charles Saseun, along with Las Vegas Valley High's Garic Wharton, didn't compete.

7. Aly Drake, Valencia, Sr. -- Despite being boxed in early in the race and needing to use extra energy to get outside in the final lap, Drake still clocked a program-record and area-leading 2:12.50 in the invitational 800 to take seventh, a drop of more than two seconds off her personal best run March 26 against Saugus. Drake's mark ranks No. 5 in the state and No. 11 nationally.

6. Tayler Johnson, Oak Park, Jr. -- Johnson eclipsed the previous area-leading mark in the long jump set Wednesday by La Reina of Thousand Oaks' Hanna Winter (17-10 1/2) by more than a foot, winning the seeded competition during Saturday's session with an effort of 18-10 3/4. Johnson jumped 18-9 in the invitational final, but passed the final three rounds to rest her back and finished sixth. Johnson also cleared 5-3 in the high jump during the day session to finish fifth.

5. Melissa Skiba, Oak Park, Jr. -- To Illustrate how fast the girls' invitational 3,200 meters was even without Mission Prep of San Luis Obispo senior Jordan Hasay -- who scratched because she was running a fever -- Skiba's personal-best 10:33.15 landed her sixth in a competition won by San Clemente's Alex Dunne (10:16.83). Skiba's mark is No. 5 in the state and No. 8 nationally this season.

4. Zack Torres, Crescenta Valley, Sr. -- To show how competitive the invitational 3,200 meters was, Torres' lifetime-best 9:02.50 -- which would've taken second at last year's Southern Section Masters meet and fourth at the state meet -- was only good for fifth place. Torres used an incredible final lap to pass seven runners, four on the final straightaway. His area-leading mark, which ranks No. 3 in the state and No. 7 nationally, is 12 seconds ahead of Camarillo sophomore Heyden Wooff.

3. Daniel Swarbrick, Saugus, Sr. -- Although he didn't surpass his state-leading marks of 61-5 1/2 in the shot put and 188-2 in the discus throw, Swarbrick was still California's top finisher in both events, recording a pair of third-place efforts. Swarbrick threw 58-7 and 187-2 and remains ranked No. 8 in the nation in both events. Agoura's Kevin Graf was fifth in the shot put with a throw of 57-1 3/4.

2. D.J. Morgan, Taft, Jr. -- Morgan's 14.09 effort in the 110 hurdles was his fastest time produced in a high school meet and just off his 14.01 performance at the U.S. Junior Olympic National Championships in July in Nebraska. The state-leading mark was good for seventh in the country this season. Morgan added a 37.35 in the 300 hurdles to finish second behind national leader Reggie Wyatt of La Sierra of Riverside (36.01). Morgan's time ranks fourth in the nation this year. He also ran a leg on Taft's 1,600 relay (3:25.21).

1. Saugus girls' 4 x mile relay -- Although Amber Murakami, Stephanie Bulder, Kaylin Mahoney and Anne Randall weren't satisfied with their national-leading mark of 20:38.75, it still beat the previous fastest outdoor standard this season by nearly 25 seconds. Saugus, which clocked a state-record 20:10.76 last year to produce the No. 4 time in U.S. prep history, became the first program to repeat since 2002-03 and now owns two of the top three times in meet history.

Crespi lacrosse

| | Comments (0) |

On their spring break, the Celts traveled to Long Island, New York and played four games against three different schools. They lost to Hewlett 15-1 on April 7th, lost to Carey of Franklin Square 13-5 on April 8th and lost to Sewanhaka of Floral Park 11-3 today. Both Kyle Radenberg and Chris Loman scored goals in the Carey and Sewanhaka games.

When Crespi returns home this week, then Mission League foe Chaminade travels to Connecticut for their East Coast road trip.

If anyone has a roster of the Crespi lacrosse team, please send a copy to john.wareham@dailynews.com so I can identify the player 'Wayler,' who also scored goals during their road trip - but I don't know his first name.

HS FOOT: Ex-NFL star Kramer promises camp will be special

| | Comments (0) |

There is not a more inspiring story than Erik Kramer's. Back in the 1980s, he was beaten out for the starting quarterback job every season at St. Genevieve, then Burroughs before eventually finding success at Pierce JC, then North Carolina State, then the NFL -- where he would eventually play 12 professional seasons playing for the Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears and San Diego Chargers.

Now Kramer is passing on his knowledge to the next generation. He and partner Curtis Conway (ex USC and Chicago Bears) are organizing a large-scale passing camp in July at L.A. Valley College.

"We're looking to do something that's more like a pro mini-camp, and we want to make into something special -- not just like any ol' quarterback camp," Kramer said.

Kramer is known to deliver a powerful pep talk, and of course that will be included.

TRACK AND FIELD: Bulder, Randall look to bounce back, while Murakami rests her hip

| | Comments (0) |

Saugus senior Anne Randall will look to shake off the disappointment of her 5-minute, 4.6-second anchor leg in the 4 x mile relay Friday night when she competes in the girls' invitational mile at 5:49 p.m. today at the 42nd Arcadia Invitational.

Randall's personal-best in the 1,600 came at last year's Southern Section Div. I prelims, when she clocked 4:57.12.

The Long Beach State signee won the invitational 1,600 race March 28 at the APU Distance Meet of Champions in a season-best 4:59.46. There is usually a 1.4-second differential between the 1,600 and the mile.

Saugus sophomore Stephanie Bulder, who clocked 5:10.9 on the second leg of the 4 x mile relay, will run in the invitational 3,200 at 7:18 p.m.

Bulder's season best in the 3,200 also came March 28 at the APU Distance Meet of Champions, clocking 10:45.36 to take third behind Oak Park's Melissa Skiba (10:37.30) -- also competing tonight -- and Randall (10:39.30).

Amber Murakami, who produced a 5:07.2 leadoff leg on the 4 x mile relay to put Saugus in front for good, will not compete in the invitational 3,200 tonight to rest a sore hip.

Saugus is also scheduled to compete during the day session in the girls' distance medley relay at 2:12 p.m., along with Canyon, Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta and Valencia.

La Reina of Thousand Oaks is the only local girls' team competing in the invitational distance medley relay at 8:10 p.m.

TRACK AND FIELD: Daunting double for Jauregui opening night at Arcadia

| | Comments (0) |

Saugus senior Brianna Jauregui didn't pick up any victories Friday night at the 42nd Arcadia Invitational, but she did garner a lot of respect from her fellow competitors for running a leg on the Centurions' 4 x mile relay 'B' team, followed by the seeded 3,200 meters less than 90 minutes apart.

Jauregui followed Courtney Wilson and Merissa Kado, clocking 5:24.9 on the third leg to keep Saugus in front of the pack, but Dana Hills of Dana Point (21:25.64), Vista Murrieta (21:27.32) and Maria Carrillo of Santa Rosa (21:28.38) closed well to push the Centurions' anchor Danielle Hernando back to fourth in 21:29.51.

Jauregui returned to the track to finish 15th in the 3,200 in 11:29.17, with freshman teammate Karis Frankian running a personal-best 11:12.40 to take 10th.

TRACK AND FIELD: A sign of things to come at Arcadia in boys' 3,200 meters

| | Comments (0) |

If Friday night was only the opening act to the main event in the boys' 3,200 meters at the 42nd Arcadia Invitational, then expect several sub-9 minute efforts tonight at Arcadia High.

Dan Mitchell of Del Campo of Fair Oaks won the second heat in 9 minutes, 9.68 seconds, with Arcadia sophomore Ammar Moussa representing well on his home track to take second in 9:12.82.

Camarillo sophomore Heyden Wooff was third in 9:14.45 and Burroughs of Burbank's Western Nelson placed fourth in 9:15.61.

Royal of Simi Valley's Sean Davidson (9:27.90) was 17th, teammate Paul Jesson (9:28.45) took 19th and Canyon's Anthony Pizzo (9:28.65) placed 21st.

Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta's Zack Torres, a UCLA signee, is the lone local entry scheduled to compete in the invitational boys' 3,200 at 7:35 p.m.

Torres is the area leader at 9:05.10, set March 28 at the APU Distance Meet of Champions at Mt. San Antonio College. The marks produced by Wooff and Nelson now rank second and third among local runners.

TRACK AND FIELD: Notre Dame's Cramer passes first high jump test at Arcadia

| | Comments (0) |

The results of the girls' high jump didn't come in until late Friday night, but Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks' Maia Cramer gave herself a chance to come back and compete again during the day session Saturday at the 42nd Arcadia Invitational.

Cramer won the rising stars competition by clearing 5 feet, 3 inches to prevail on fewer misses over Carter of Rialto's Shanice Stewart. The victory earned Cramer the right to compete at 11:15 a.m. today in the seeded high jump, with the winner of that competition advancing to participate in the invitational high jump at 5:30 p.m.

Cramer's teammate, Ali Clayton jumped 5-1 to tie for third. Rio Mesa of Oxnard's Kayla Lindquist also cleared 5-1. Lindquist's teammate Riley Nizdil, who will compete today in the high jump, produced an effort of 35-1 to take ninth in the rising stars girls' triple jump.

Notre Dame's success wasn't limited to the high jump, as Bre Kigozi nearly won the rising stars girls' long jump with an effort of 17-7 1/2, but took second to Vista's Danielle Littleton on a judges' decision based on a better second jump (17-5 1/2 to 17-5).

HS FOOT: Scholarship offers continue to pour in for Palmdale's Shaw

| | Comments (0) |

Palmdale multi-purpose standout Joshua Shaw, a returning junior who is equally comfortable at defensive back, receiver andc quarterback, is in hot demand.

He picked up his third DI scholarship offer this past weekend (from Oregon) after already being offered by Washington and San Diego State, according to scout.com.

Most recruits would love to play for a Pac-10 school, which would seem make San Diego State an underdog in the recruiting race for Shaw, but don't count out the Aztecs because Shaw's brother, Kenny, played there.

TRACK AND FIELD: Winter springs to long jump record for La Reina

| | Comments (0) |

Only a sophomore, Hanna Winter entered Wednesday's Tri-Valley League meet against Oaks Christian of Westlake Village and St. Bonaventure of Ventura having contributed to seven program records at La Reina of Thousand Oaks, including five at the varsity level.

Make that eight school records, six at the varsity level.

Winter delivered one of the top individual efforts of the season in the long jump, improving on her personal-record by more than a foot and a half to leap 17 feet, 10 1/2 inches to break Sasha Blanchard's record of 17-10 1/4 set at last year's Southern Section Div. IV final.

Winter added victories in the 100 and 200, but it still wasn't enough to beat the host Lions, who won the 1,600 relay to prevail 70-66.

"I was really, really surprised. I never had any long jump training and my first meet (March 7 at the Don Green Invitational) I only jumped 14-7, so I was really shocked," Winter said. "I knew I had to win the long jump for us to have a chance to win and I just came out and did what I needed to do to help the team."

Winter's first jump of 15-5 would've placed her third. Her second effort of 16-2 was a personal-best and put her in first, ahead of Oaks Christian's Lindsay Cooper (16- 1/2) and Annalise Bachman (15-8 1/2), both of whom had personal bests.

But her last jump not only was a huge PR, but it moved her into the top 10 in the state in wind-legal performances this season. It also gave La Reina a 66-65 lead entering the 1,600 relay.

"They had the tape stretched out almost to 18 feet and I couldn't believe it. The jump felt like I did everything right with my technique," Winter said. "Nerves really drive me a lot. It was the motivation that I needed to do that jump for my team that really drove me to the best of my capabilities."

Unfortunately for La Reina, even the three victories from Winter and nine overall weren't enough to hold off Oaks Christian, as Jenny Philen, Megan Huning, Niki MacWhirter and Ally Courtnall clocked 4:06.73 to win the 1,600 relay by more than four seconds.

"It's really disappointing that our team, as a whole, didn't win the meet, but we put up a good fight and Oaks Christian is a really good team," Winter said. "But I'm proud that I did my part."

Winter will compete Saturday in the distance medley relay, along with Tara Blanchard, Rachel Brajkovich and Sarah Pearson, at the Arcadia Invitational. La Reina's mark of 12:18.09 set March 20 at the Camarillo Classic ranks fourth in the state and sixth nationally this season.

BASEBALL: Lira is money for Chatsworth in Las Vegas

| | Comments (0) |

After Andrew Klausmeier, Mike Renner and Ryan Cooperstone came through with clutch pitching performances throughout the tournament for Chatsworth, sophomore left-hander David Lira stepped up Wednesday night to earn his first victory with a 9-5 win over Durango in the final of the Blazer Spring Bash in Las Vegas.

Lira allowed three hits and struck out seven before being lifted for Shawn Meusborn in the fourth. Carlos Escobar Jr., the Chancellors' starting catcher, pitched the seventh to earn the save for Chatsworth, which defeated tournament host Durango for the second time in three days, including a 2-1 victory Monday.

Meusborn also capped a five-run third inning for the Chancellors (17-1) by delivering a two-out, two-run single. Meusborn, Derek Neely and Andy Weissberg all had two hits for Chatsworth, which outscored its tournament opponents 33-10 to extend its winning streak to 15.

Weissberg had an RBI double and Escobar Jr. collected a run-scoring single in the third for the Chancellors, who added two insurance runs in the sixth.

Chatsworth advanced to the final with an 8-3 victory Wednesday over Las Vegas High.

Escobar Jr., Klausmeier and Weissberg all homered for the Chancellors.

Klausmeier went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and Escobar Jr. and Weissberg both had two hits and two RBIs. Escobar Jr. hit an inside-the-park home run as part of a three-run first for Chatsworth, which received a complete-game outing from Cooperstone (5-1).

I'll post photos of some of the participants over the next couple of days, but here is a teaser of who the (Male) Wrestler of the Year will be.

I had misidentified a Chaminade goal scorer in the game against Loyola this weekend as Mark Bitter. It was actually his twin brother Ryan. My apologies.

Baseball: Notre Dame beats Camarillo

| | Comments (0) |

The Notre Dame Knights (11-2) won at home on Saturday afternoon, defeating Camarillo (9-5) by the score of 5-0. Senior RHP Nico Silardi started and went 5 innings (4 Hits, 3 K, 1BB) and picked up the shut out win. Casey Ryan thrilled those on hand with a home run to left field, and Kelly Dugan was 2 for 4, with a double. Other than Casey's solo home run to lead off the 4th inning, the Knight RBI tally belonged to Walbridge, Aldape, Lowe, with one each. Defensively Casey Ryan initiated two double plays, and any game in which Josh Goossen-Brown takes the mound would not be complete without him picking a runner off. He had one today, at second base, to end the game, as he closed the 7th inning. The team is looking forward to a spring break road trip, to participate in the Anderson Classic Tournament starting Monday April 13th opening against a talented team from Jesuit High School.

HS FOOT: Focus on football for Alemany's Lenik

| | Comments (0) |

Kevin Lenik, once considered one of the San Fernando Valley's brightest young baseball talents, is no longer playing baseball, instead concentrating on football at Alemany.

As a 13-year-old in 2005, Lenik was a travel-ball All-American, and two years later he was 2-0 with a 2.54 ERA as a freshman at Granada Hills.

Lenik then transferred to Alemany but was plagued by elbow problems that limited his productivity on the baseball diamond. But he found a home as a tight end on the football team -- scoring a key touchdown reception in a 21-16 upset victory over Loyola of L.A. in October -- and Lenik, now 6-foot-3, figures to play a more important role this coming season.

HS FOOT: Next position please for ex-Hart standouts

| | Comments (0) |

A couple of former Hart standouts whom you'd never think would switch positions are doing just that.

Stanford running back Delano Howell is at safety, and Arizona quarterback Tyler Lyon is trying his hand at tight end.

Howell, a sophomore, played sparingly as a backup last season but averaged 25.8 yards as a kick returner.

Lyon, a junior, fell from being the backup as a freshman to the No. 3 quarterback last season. He has yet to attempt a pass.

BOYS' BASKETBALL: Essa no longer coaching at Bell-Jeff

| | Comments (0) |

There are reports from sources at Bell-Jeff of Burbank that boys' basketball coach Eli Essa will no longer be coaching the Guards after 14 years at the helm.

Essa, in Detroit this weekend attending the NCAA Men's Final Four, was the school's longest tenured head coach.

Bell-Jeff went 16-12 this season with a lineup featuring mostly freshmen and sophomores. But concerns over the direction of the program caused the administration to tell Essa before he left for Detroit that they'd be looking for a new head coach for the 2009-10 school year.

Essa, who began his high school coaching career in 1984-85 as an assistant at North Hollywood under Steve Miller, coached Ruben Douglas from 1995-98 at Bell-Jeff. Douglas went on to lead the NCAA in scoring at New Mexico in 2002-03.

HS FOOT: Canyon's Bray in trouble again

| | Comments (0) |

Canyon running back Antonio Bray is always making the news -- but this time, again, it's not good. He has been suspended from school for one week for fighting, according to a source.

Both Canyon coach Chris Varner and Bray have apparently changed their cell numbers and were not available for comment.

After rushing for nearly 2,000 yards as a freshman playing up one level on Canyon's JV team in 2006, Bray was later suspended for attacking a fellow student and eventually transferred to Alemany.

At Alemany in 2007, he scored seven touchdowns, two on kick returns, despite missing one game for disciplinary reasons. He later left Alemany and transferred back to Canyon for his junior season but was declared ineligible by the Southern Section because of undue influence.

HS BASE: Home Sweet Home for Valencia

| | Comments (0) |

There's no place like home for the Valencia Vikings.

With a young pitching staff that includes two sophomore starters, Valencia, annually among the area's top baseball programs, is struggling to find itself. But the Vikings (6-4, 3-2) love playing on their own field, winning their fifth home game without a loss Friday by defeating rival Hart of Newhall 10-4 in a Foothill League showdown before a crowd of about 300.

"We do love this place. It's a nice field," said Dylan Jones, who hit a three-run home run and finished 2 for 4 with three runs.

Or, as coach Jared Snyder put it: "We have some road woes."

After winning 23 games last year, defending league champion Hart (6-4-1, 3-2) is not the same following the graduation of ace pitchers Michael Montgomery and Trevor Bauer, both of whom threw more than 90 mph. Montgomery was a first-round supplemental pick by the Kansas City Royals, and Bauer graduated early to play at UCLA, where he is among the top young pitchers in the Pacific-10.

"I still think Hart is very good," Jones said. "They could have beat us today."

For 4 ½ innings, Hart was giving Valencia all it could handle. But the game turned in the bottom of the fifth on a key bases-loaded infield error that cost the Indians two runs instead of getting starter Trevor Brown out of a jam.

"We had it and we let it slip away," Hart designated hitter Adam Bouyer said. "Yes, it's been tough losing two good pitchers, but our staff has come a long way."

Valencia's Kyle Eaton pitched the final two innings, and he also had two hits and scored a run.

After going just 3 for 25 to start the season, Bouyer is coming on strong. He first broke out Wednesday against Canyon by going 2 for 2 with three RBIs, then on Friday against Valencia he hit his first career home run - a three-run shot in the second inning - and added a single, finishing 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs.

In two games, Bouyer has raised his average more than 100 points -- from .120 with 14 strikeouts in 10 games to .233.

"I've worked hard on my swing going to the cages," Bouyer said.

Also a top football player, the 6-foot-2, 235-pound Bouyer strongly believes his future is in baseball.

"Football is in the past. It's definitely baseball," Bouyer said.

Compared to usual, Valencia and Hart both have thin pitching staffs. They'll be put to the test this coming week, as each is in the midst of a six-game slate over eight days.

"We're just very young," Snyder said.

TRACK AND FIELD: Hampton's record highlights big day on the track

| | Comments (0) |

Aside from Brandon Jauregui's monster triple Thursday at Saugus, there were several other outstanding track and field performances around the area that deserve recognition. I'm sure there's more, but not everybody who competed Thursday reported their information.

At the top of the list was Alex Hampton's program-record 58.69 in the 400 in Saugus' 85-51 victory over Canyon, putting the Centurions in strong position to capture a fourth consecutive Foothill League title. Hampton, who also ran legs on the victorious 400 (49.87) and 1,600 (4:07.88) relays as well as competing in the 200, broke the 2006 mark of 59.77 held by UCLA talent Shannon Murakami.

On the same track, Saugus' Amber Wright contributed four victories to Saugus' success, winning the 100 (12.62), 200 (25.83) and running strong legs on both relays, including an impressive anchor on the 400 relay, following Ashley Kramer, Jamie Molacek and Hampton.

Amber Murakami didn't pick up an individual win for Saugus, but took second in the 1,600 (5:09.59) behind teammate Stephanie Bulder (5:08.28) and finished runner-up (2:20.88) to teammate Anne Randall (2:19.25) in the 800, along with running a leg on the 1,600 relay with Nicole Penick. Hampton and Wright.

Canyon freshman Taylor Thomas didn't disappoint, winning two head-to-head battles with Kramer in the 100 (15.34) and 300 (48.44) hurdles.

Tiffini Stone doubled in the long jump (16-8 1/2) and triple jump (33-7) for Canyon, which received victories in the shot put (38-7 1/2) and discus throw (115-4) from Courtney Saunders.

Although it wasn't as highly publicized as Jauregui's three victories, Saugus' Karis Frankian produced an equally impressive triple in the girls' JV 800, 1,600 and 3,200 against Canyon, with teammate Emily McCarty pushing her every step of the way.

Valencia's Aly Drake followed her program record 2:14.80 in the 800 on March 26 against Saugus by running a 27.4 in the 200 and 58.4 in the 400 in a 96-40 victory over Golden Valley.

Oak Park's Melissa Skiba won a highly anticipated distance showdown against La Reina of Thousand Oaks, taking the 1,600 (5:03.48) and 3,200 (10:59.27) in the Eagles' 75-61 victory. Tara Blanchard doubled in the 400 (59.78) and 800 (2:24.23) for the Regents, who received a sprint sweep from Hanna Winter in the 100 (12.6) and 200 (25.9).

Although Glendale was defeated by Arcadia, the Nitros' Daniela Pollard took first in the long jump (17-1), the triple jump (37-2) and the high jump (4-8).

Josh Coefield picked up victories for Saugus in the 100 (10.72) and 200 (22.31) in the Centurions' 76-60 win over Canyon. Daniel Swarbrick doubled in the shot put (58-1 1/2) and discus throw (167-8) and Cameron Penta swept the 110 (15.56) and 300 (41.06) hurdles for Saugus, which defeated the Cowboys for the second year in a row after not beating Canyon since 1986.

Harrison Hall was impressive on the runway for Canyon, winning the long jump (20-11 1/2) and triple jump (42-8).

Valencia's Falco DiGiallonardo contributed to the Vikings' 68-68 tie in their Foothill League meet at Golden Valley by capturing the 800 and 1,600, but the times were unavailable.

Hoover of Glendale's Harold Tabora won the 200 (22.94) and 400 (51.82) in the Tornadoes' Pacific League win over Burbank, which received victories from Greg Dotson in the 800 (2:06) and 1,600 (4:33.4).

TRACK AND FIELD: Jauregui goes the distance and then some

| | Comments (0) |

Simply put, Brando was the man-do.

Saugus senior Brandon Jauregui demonstrated incredible heart, determination and will Thursday against a talented corps of Canyon runners to win the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 in the Centurions' 76-60 Foothill League victory, an important step for Saugus on its way to possibly winning the program's first boys' track and field league title since 1986.

Jauregui went 4:34.87 in the 1,600, 2:02.31 in the 800 and 9:33.97 in the 3,200, facing serious challenges from Canyon's Anthony Pizzo, Kenny Moreno and Tommy McGuan, as well as teammates Alex Ruther and Alec Nelson, en route to one of the most impressive triples of the high school season.

"I've never seen him that tough before," Saugus distance coach Rene Paragas said. "He had fresh guys coming at him all day and he kept going after them. It was an incredible performance."

Most satisfying for Jauregui was his down-to-the-wire victory in the 3,200 over a hard-charging Pizzo (9:34.0), atoning a for a four-second loss Saturday at the APU Distance Meet of Champions at Mt. SAC.

"That (3,200) was all about Saturday. I used that as motivation," Jauregui said. "I knew I could've beaten him, but I guess I gave up the last lap. (Thursday) I went all out."

A frustrated Paragas challenged Jauregui, who was in position to finish in the top five entering the last lap, but covered the final 400 meters in 80-plus seconds and faded to 14th (9:32.9), while Pizzo took 10th in 9:28.

After losing in the 3,200 on Saturday, which followed a setback March 26 in the 1,600 to Valencia's Falco DiGiallonardo, a disappointed Jauregui took the opportunity to accomplish the three-race gauntlet personally, delivering a courageous performance, much to the delight of Paragas.

"I'll sleep well (Thursday) night," he said.

Boys Basketball: Patterson named Athletic Director

| | Comments (0) |

Greg Patterson, the longtime boys basketball coach at Montclair Prep of Panorama City has assumed duties of athletic director.

Patterson takes over for Ken Smith, who has been battling health problems (back and leg) for several years.

"It's exciting, a new challenge," Patterson said. "This is a move forward in my career and I am looking forward to it."

Patterson will still coach the basketball team as of now and continue to teach English at the 300 student high school.

HS FOOT: Crespi's Grasu vows comeback

| | Comments (0) |

After a stunning collapse last season that saw state power Crespi lose its final three games to fall out of playoff contention, returning offensive/defensive lineman Hroniss Grasu is more motivated than ever heading into his senior season.

"We're all (peeved) off about last year. Hopefully, we use that anger to dominate," Grasu said.

Grasu, a 6-foot-3, 255-pounder, is being courted by several top college programs, including USC and UCLA, though no official offers have come forth.
