Baseball: Berrington resigns at Newbury Park

| | Comments (0) |

In a stunning development at Newbury Park, baseball coach Chuck Berrington resigned under pressure from parents and the administration.

It is still unclear as to what is really going on at Newbury Park but a group of parents apparently expressed concerns to administrator Richard Urias and the principal the last two weeks.

Berrington led the Panthers to 20 wins in his only season and a Division I playoff berth.

Berrington has had successful stints at Westlake and Taft of Woodland Hills previous to taking the Newbury Park job.

Berrington led Westlake to the Southern Section finals and turned around a Taft program that was left for dead before his arrival.

"I decided to go ahead and resign because thats what they wanted," Berrington said. "The parents are weak and the administration is weak. We had a great season, won 20 games and with a young team."

Berrington becomes the second coach to leave Newbury Park under similar circumstances following Scott Drootin's departure.

SOFTBALL: Eagle Rock to play Narbonne on Wednesday in City invitational final at UCLA

| | Comments (0) |

Eagle Rock, led by senior pitcher Theresa Kelley (16-9, 237 strikeouts, 0.96 ERA), will attempt to prevent the Marine League from sweeping both City Section titles today when it faces Narbonne of Harbor City in the Invitational final at 2 p.m. at UCLA's Easton Stadium.

Top-seeded San Pedro (27-4) will look to record its fourth victory this season over Marine rival Banning of Wilmington (21-11), the No. 6 seed, in the City championship game at 4:15 p.m.

San Pedro is seeking its fourth consecutive City title and record 16th overall.

Eagle Rock (17-9), the No. 19 seed, rebounded from a 2-1 opening-round loss to Sylmar to defeat Crenshaw 9-1, Huntington Park 15-3 and Northern League rival Wilson of El Sereno 4-1 to advance to the Invitational final.

Narbonne (16-7-1), the No. 12 seed, bounced back from a 10-7 first-round loss to No. 21 Venice to shut out Eastern League opponents Roosevelt (10-0), Bell (7-0) and Garfield (3-0) en route to today's contest.

In addition to Theresa Kelley (.376, 23 RBIs) -- daughter of coach Martin Kelley -- Vicky Delgado (.407, 19 runs, 15 RBIs), Veronica Solis (.406, 12 runs, 18 RBIs) and Arelly Alvarez (.316, 22 runs, 15 RBIs) will look to carry the Eagle Rock offense.

The Gauchos are led by Elia Lizarraga (.545, 27 runs, 22 RBIs) and Kristina Torrez (.438, 14 runs, 19 RBIs). Lizarraga (16-6, 1.87 ERA, 174 Ks), a sophomore, is also expected to start for Narbonne.

BOYS' GOLF: Hagy takes runner-up at Southern Section final, leads list of local qualifiers to SCGA event

| | Comments (0) |

Westlake's Brandon Hagy and Jake Katz had already secured their berths June 3 at the CIF/SCGA boys' golf tournament by helping the Warriors take fourth May 14 at the Southern Section team final in Santa Barbara.

But that didn't stop them from producing impressive performances Tuesday at the Southern Section individual final at Hacienda Golf Club in La Habra Heights.

Hagy shot a 3-under 68 to finish runner-up to Servite of Anaheim's Patrick Cantlay (66), who recorded another brilliant round after firing a 65 at the May 18 Southern Regional final at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach. Hagy -- who matched Katz with a 73 at the Northern Regional final May 18 at Sterling Hills Golf Course in Camarillo -- and Cantlay were the only golfers in the 87-player field to break par.

Katz shot 72 to finish in a tie for sixth, one stroke behind Loyola's Marco Fortades, who finished third.

West Ranch of Stevenson Ranch's J.J. Holen (74), Oaks Christian of Westlake Village's Ty Gretzky (75), Camarillo's Bruce Haynes (75), Campbell Hall of North Hollywood's Ramsey Sayhoun (75) and Chaminade of West Hills' Nick Thomas (75) were among the 32 players who advanced to the regional event at the SCGA Members Club in Temecula. Thomas and Sayhoun took second and third at the Northern Regional, both shooting 68s.

Hagy and Katz will be joined at the SCGA tournament by their teammates, who are looking to help the Warriors qualify for the state tournament June 10 at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.

Rio Mesa of Oxnard's Jordan Cuthbert shot 77, part of a group of five golfers who missed the cut by one stroke.

Quartz Hill's Austin Raanes, who shot a 66 to win the Northern Regional, fired an 82 Tuesday.

Baseball: Hartunian leading Montclair Prep

| | Comments (0) |

IS HARTUNIAN MONTCLAIR PREP'S NEXT MAJOR LEAGUER?

The field he plays on bears his name, which will make it hard to leave behind, but is Montclair Prep's Matt Hartunian bound for USC or Major League Baseball? If history has anything to do with it, Matt's next stop could be the MLB draft on June 9th. Major League Alumni from Prep include Torey Lovullo, Russ Ortiz and Brad Fullmer, who holds Prep's homerun record of 31, which Matt made a valiant run at (26). Matt is a four year Varsity starter with an overall high school batting avg. of .479, 139 RBI, 26 HR, 79 2B, and an on base percentage over .670. At 5'11", 200 lbs, Matt is the quintessential catcher, although, he can play anywhere, including the mound. Of Matt's prowess behind the dish, MCP head coach Rick Weber says, "Hartunian is a power hitting catcher, which is rare, and with a pop time under 2.0 seconds, nobody runs on us...nobody!" Leading us to an opening round win against Lompoc this past Tuesday, Matt was 3-3 raising this year's batting avg. to nearly .600. Ex-pro coach Daylon Monette says, "The ball just jumps off his bat. I've never seen anyone in high school with his approach to hitting." Monette is pushing Matt to go pro...Matt says, "Let the cards fall where they fall, I can play anywhere!" June 9th can't come soon enough.

NOTRE DAME KNIGHTS WIN MISSION LEAGUE OUTRIGHT WITH 2nd VICTORY AT LOYOLA

The Knights won the Mission League today in defeating Loyola 5-1 @ Loyola
for second time this week. The team went 10-2 in league and 22-5 overall in
2009 regular season play.

After the game Head Coach Tom Dill told his players that while the job was
clearly not done, he was as pleased with this league title as he was with
winning the CIF crown at Dodger Stadium last season. He said every player
had contributed to the winning season.

And now the run begins to defend that CIF title.

In this last game of the regular season Sophomore RHP Matt Lathuras pitched
a 4 hitter complete game for the win. 6 K's, 1 BB, 1 HB. He did not alllow
any hits after 3rd inning !

For Loyola Tyler Rosado took the loss going 4.2 innings. He was relieved by
Tyler Hebna.

The Knights scored 1 in first, 1 in third, 1 in 5th and 2 in 7th. All
earned. Loyola scored their run in 2nd, unearned.

Loyola was led by A.J. La Bruna was 2 for 3. Loyola did not have any extra
base hits in game. Kevin Swick scored the Cubs run.

Knights Senior Center Fielder Kelly Dugan was 3 for 4, including a double
and a deep home run (a solo, his 8th) to center. He scored 2 runs and had 3
RBI's. 1st Baseman Pedro Aldape was 4 for 4 with an RBI.

DH Eric Walbridge was and Catcher Nick La Face were each 2 for 3. La Face
had a double, and a walk, reaching base in all four of his at bats. Ranny
Lowe was 1 for 2 (HB and BB) scored twice from lead off spot.

On defense, Lowe-Ryan-Aldape turned a signature double play in the 1st
inning. There was 1 error committed by each team. Nick La Face caught a
complete game for ND and Brian Ulmer did same for Loyola.

Knights start their playoff run at home a week from tomorrow Friday 22nd.

Baseball: West Valley League should receive top three seeds in City baseball playoffs

| | Comments (0) |

Although it probably won't happen, the West Valley League deserves the top three seeds when officials meet Saturday to determine the 2009 City Section Division I playoff draw.

Cleveland should be No. 1 by virtue of its league championship at 13-2, one victory over Chatsworth and three against El Camino Real.

Chatsworth should be No. 2 as it is one of Southern California's best teams despite two late season losses to ECR and Taft.

Remember, Chatsworth has won the past two City titles and has made six consecutive appearances in the title game.

ECR should be given the nod over Narbonne, the Marine League champion, because it beat them head to head fair and square at Loyola Marymount early in the season.

ECR should not be penalized because it played in the best League in the section and one of the best in Southern California.

We will see what happens Saturday. There are always some surprises.

High Schools: West Valley League dominating spring playoffs

| | Comments (0) |

The City Section is hard at work trying to come out with new leagues for a four year cycle starting with the 201-2011 season.

But right now the West Valley League is absolutely dominating across the board.

Just this spring the boys volleyball playoffs have three of the four remaining teams in Taft, Granada Hills and El Camino Real.

Same story in softball with El Camino Real, Granada Hills and Chatsworth.

Back in March, Taft and Cleveland made the semifinals in boys basketball with Taft barely losing to juggernaut Westchester.

Chatsworth, Taft and El Camino Real made the semifinals in girls basketball. Chatsworth beat Taft in the final.

The league is far and away above the rest in the City Section.

Volleyball: ECR advances to semifinals

| | Comments (0) |

It took longer than expected but the El Camino Real of Woodland Hills boys volleyball team got what it wanted in the end.

The Conquistadores (12-3) shook off losses in game one and four and fought back from a 9-8 deficit in a deciding game five to outlast No. 6 Venice 15-25, 26-24, 25-15, 19-25, 15-12 Thursday night in a City Section quarterfinal match.

"We just kept believing," Kris DuBois said. "We always get off to a slow start bur we started clicking."

Kris DuBois had nine kills and six blocks and his brother Mikel led the team with 17 kills for ECR.

Tim Kolodny added four kills and 10 digs for ECR, hoping to advance to its second consecutive championship appearance but first must beat No. 2 Granada Hills on Tuesday in a semifinal.

"We had a lot of unforced errors early but we settled down and got momentum on our side during the middle games," Kolodny said.

Michael Rauth had 24 assists, often setting nicely for the Dubois brothers.

Jesse Escobar chipped in five blocks.

"I knew we would have a tough game because they are a good team and come from a good league," ECR coach Doug Coleman said. "Now I have to figure a way out to beat Granada Hills.

JC SOFTBALL: Mission falls in deciding game of super regional

| | Comments (0) |

The Mission College softball team pushed Southern California's top-seed Cypress College to a deciding game Sunday in their best-of-three Super Regional, but the visiting Eagles couldn't protect an early one-run lead and fell 9-3 to see their season end one victory shy of the state tournament.

Mission (32-12), the lowest remaining seed (No. 11) in the Super Regionals, rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh in the second game to prevail 4-3, creating a do-or-die contest to advance to the eight-team state tournament in Salinas.

But despite Mission taking a 3-2 lead in the second inning of the final game, Cypress (45-9) scored four runs in the third and three more in the sixth to secure a return trip to the state tournament.

L.A. Baptist of North Hills graduate Allyson Salas (22-11) pitched both games for Mission, scattering eight hits and allowing two earned runs in the second game. But the fatigue of pitching three games in two days caught up with the sophomore, who gave up 11 hits and eight earned runs in the deciding game.

Kennedy of Granada Hills graduate Amanda Gutierrez went 3 for 3 with two runs scored in the opening game and Diane Ravago (Alemany of Mission Hills) had two hits and three RBIs, including the game-winning, two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

Stephanie Boshae (Sylmar) and Evie Lugo (Kennedy) scored for Mission in the victory.

Gutierrez and Julienne Jimenez (San Fernando) both had two hits in the third game for Mission, which scored a first-inning run thanks in part to a pair of Cypress errors. After surrendering two runs in the bottom of the first, the Eagles regained the lead in the second as Samantha Durazo (Kennedy) and Adriana Todeo (San Fernando) scored.

Durazo and Boshae both doubled and Ravago and Rosheema Wise (Kennedy) drove in runs in the third game for Western State Conference co-champion Mission, which reached the Super Regionals two years removed from a 7-31 season and one year after a loss to Long Beach City College in the opening round of regional competition.

HS FOOT: Eight-man standout Keoshian headed to BYU

| | Comments (0) |

HS BASE: Ex-Valencia slugger making his pitch as a pro

| | Comments (0) |

Former Valencia standout Casey Mulligan was a top infielder and catcher in high school and was best known for his hitting, earning All-Daily News honors in 2006 as a catcher who hit .407 with six home runs while pitching a total of nine innings.

But Mulligan is really catching on as a relief pitcher in the minor leagues at Single-A Quad Cities. The 21-year-old right-hander is 1-0 with a 0.82 ERA and seven saves with 23 strikeouts and just two walks in 11 innings -- which means he is developing into one of the country's brightest young prospects as a closer.

HS BASE: Valencia sophomore Lopes having another huge season

| | Comments (0) |

After hitting 10 home runs as a highly-touted freshman a year ago, Valencia's Christian Lopes is having an All-Amercian type season.

He went 5 for 5 with two home runs, two doubles and six RBIs Friday in a 22-6 victory over West Ranch to push the Vikings into first-place in the Foothill League with two games remaining and giving Lopes 13 home runs, four over the past three games.

Less than halfway through his career, Lopes already has tied Jared Clark's school career record of 23 -- and it would not be a total surprise if Lopes eventually doubles Clark's mark before the young shortstop is finished.

This season, Lopes, a leadoff hitter, is batting .427 with 36 runs and 28 RBIs in 24 games, and his slugging percentage is an out-of-sight 1.200 -- all the more impressive considering Valencia has played one of the area's toughest schedules. He has been walked 24 times.

Furthermore, Lopes again has turned it on toward the end of the season. He has eight home runs over the past 11 games after hitting eight over the final 12 as a freshman.

Of course, none of this is a surprise. As a 13-year-old, Lopes was rated as the No. 1 player in the United States in his age group. He entered high school as perhaps the Valley area's most hyped freshman of all-time.

TRACK AND FIELD: Pizzo's performance highlights phenomenal night at Canyon

| | Comments (0) |

There were wins by wide gaps and little margins, from wire to wire and rallying in the final meters, significant personal records and major disappointments. There was exhilaration and agony, controversy and compassion, breakthroughs and breakdowns.

The Foothill League track and field final had it all Friday night, including four victories by Valencia's Jasmine Hall (200, high jump, 400 relay and 1,600 relay), three by teammate Aly Drake (800, 400 relay and 1,600 relay) and three from West Ranch's Matt Harmon (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and 1,600 relay).

But even with all their success, were they good enough to make the cut? Here is a list of the top 10 individual performances from an exceptional night of racing and field events at Canyon High.

10. Cody Cox, West Ranch, long jump - After losing to Canyon's Harrison Hall by more than a foot in their March 26 showdown in the league-opening dual meet, Cox had a lot of work to do to compete for the league title. Even with his best jump in a league meet April 30 against Golden Valley, he was still six inches behind Hall's best effort against Valencia. But Cox managed to jump a personal-best 21-2 ½ to get past Hall (21-2) and win the league title.

9. Alex Ecsedy, Saugus, shot put - Canyon's Courtney Saunders came in as the favorite to sweep titles in the shot put and discus, boasting the top shot put mark in a league meet, as well as a head-to-head victory over Ecsedy when they squared off April 2. Ecsedy trailed through three rounds of the final, before taking the lead in the fourth and unleashing a season-best 40-1 ½ throw in the fifth to win the championship.

8. Josh Coefield, Saugus, 200 - There was a lot of pre-race hype after Coefield lost March 26 to Valencia's Zach Tartabull in the league opener, but the Centurions senior took care of the rest of his league opponents in preparation for a rematch. Once he got it, he earned a measure of revenge, pulling away in the final 20 meters to prevail 22.77 to 22.97.

7. Anthony Soto, Hart, 800 - Although he ran faster in the prelims, Soto produced the Indians' only championship on the track with a 1:9.64 effort, holding off challenges throughout the first 600, before pulling away down the stretch from Golden Valley's Gabe Vazquez and Kristian Martinez and 1,600 champion Falco DiGiallonardo of Valencia.

6. Falco DiGiallonardo, Valencia, 1,600 - In one of the deepest fields of the night, the Vikings sophomore captured the championship with an impressive 4:28.60 effort, using an impressive kick to separate himself from Golden Valley's Seth Totten (4:30.79), Canyon's Michael Noris (4:31.20) and Hart's Sam Peckham (4:32.05).

5. Valencia's boys' 400 relay - Not in title contention when Jabari Howard received the baton following the final pass, the junior reeled in Canyon's anchor Shane Habberstad with a punishing stretch run, leaning just ahead at the finish line to get the nod 43.27 to 43.34.

4. Taylor Thomas, Canyon, 300 hurdles - In a season that hasn't been filled with much suspense, Saugus senior Ashley Kramer provided some for the talented ninth-grader in the final 100 meters of the race, before Thomas responded in emphatic fashion to prevail in a personal-best 45.19 to complete a hurdles sweep. Thomas was overcome with emotion following the race, a tribute to how much the victory meant to her.

3. Stephanie Bulder, Saugus, 1,600 - The sophomore led for a good part of the middle of the race, before teammate Anne Randall took over, followed by West Ranch's Jennifer Owen. Bulder remained on Owen's shoulder until there was 300 meters to go, when the West Ranch sophomore tried to put her Saugus challengers away. Although she trailed by five meters inside the final 100, Bulder's long strides and determination caught up with Owen, leaning ahead at the finish 5:02.11 to 5:02.12 to capture the title.

2. Kaylin Mahoney, Saugus, 3,200 - Although she won the league title last year and finished third in the state, there was no reason to think that with less than a dozen races during the regular season after overcoming a stress reaction in her left leg in December, that Mahoney could defend her crown en route to a possible four-peat. Then the sophomore demonstrated why she is one of the most competitive athletes in the area, pulling away from teammates Karis Frankian and Brianna Jauregui in the final lap to win in 10:57.09, with Frankian second in 10:57.52, giving the Centurions six girls under 11 minutes this season.

1. Anthony Pizzo, Canyon, 3,200 - In an instant classic and candidate for race of the year, Pizzo's down-to-the-wire battle with Saugus' Brandon Jauregui was an epic way to punctuate the meet. Pizzo opened a 10-meter lead in the final 300, before Jauregui began to run him down, eventually moving ahead in the final 50 meters. But after a group of disappointing finishes during the regular season, Pizzo was able to lean ahead of Jauregui, who made a habit of narrow victories during league meets. Although Pizzo was mobbed by teammates in celebration, the original results of the race credited Jauregui with the victory by three-hundredths, even awarding him the first-place medal. But after looking at the photo of the finish, it was clear that Pizzo leaned ahead of Jauregui, giving him the win by a 9:36.24 to 9:36.27 margin.

TRACK AND FIELD: Coefield has the last word in sprint showdown with Tartabull

| | Comments (0) |

Josh Coefield tried to downplay it after the race. And for once, Valencia's Zach Tartabull didn't have anything to say about his rivalry with the Saugus senior.

Coefield let his running speak for itself Friday night at Canyon, completing a sprint double with a victory in the 200 over Tartabull, atoning for a loss March 26 in the league opener at Valencia.
"He beat me the first time we raced because I kind of underestimated him, but it was different in the final," Coefield said. "It's not like I don't like the guy, he just thought he was the favorite in the 200 and that motivated me."

Although he never trailed in the 100, Coefield needed a well-timed lean to finish ahead of West Ranch's Ross Bacon 11.27 to 11.30. Coefield found another extra burst of energy to pull away from the charging Tartabull in the final 20 meters of the 200 to prevail 22.77 to 22.97. Tartabull sat dejected for a lengthy period following the race, unresponsive to his consoling teammates.

"I knew he was coming and it was just the feeling that I didn't want to get beat again," Coefield said.

Coefield sported a shirt in between races that read "Left no doubt" on the back, in reference to Saugus' sweep of the Foothill dual meets, resulting in the Centurions' first boys' league championship since 1986.

After trailing Hart's Delano Howell last season, Coefield also left no doubt as to who the league's elite sprinter was this season.

"It's definitely a good way to go out," Coefield said. "My sophomore year I won, but last year Delano Howell was there. But this is how I imagined it my senior year."

TRACK AND FIELD: Hampton gets back in winner's circle, record books

| | Comments (0) |

Alex Hampton doesn't like to lose. And there was no way the Saugus sophomore was going to let it happen again Friday at the Foothill League track and field final.

Hampton had set the Centurions 400-meter program record April 2 against Canyon with a mark of 58.69. That set her up as a legitimate contender for the league title, especially if Valencia senior Aly Drake was going to concentrate on the 800 in the postseason.

But Hampton suffered a loss April 23 to Golden Valley's Lauren Hackney, providing the ideal motivation for their rematch Friday at Canyon High.

Hampton responded with an exceptional performance, quickly making up the stagger on Hackney and the rest of the field en route to lowering her school record to 57.64 and capturing the league championship, with Hackney taking second in 58.27.

"I've been trying to get 57 the past two weeks and I've been right on the boundary, so it's kind of unbelievable (to see that time)," Hampton said. "The last time we raced, she caught me and I'm really competitive and I can't stand when I lose to people. I was a lot more pumped up this time."

Hampton's effort puts her in position to qualify for the Div. II final with another good effort May 16 at the prelims at Moorpark High. If she can make it through to the championship meet, she could be an asset in Saugus' bid to contend for a team plaque.

"I knew I couldn't let anyone beat me," said Hampton, who also ran a leg on Saugus' third-place 1,600 relay team (4:04.23). "I'm always feeling like someone's going to pass me and I really hate to lose, so that really motivated me."

TRACK AND FIELD: Taylor-made hurdle victories for Canyon freshman

| | Comments (0) |

I have seen the future of area hurdling and her name is Taylor Thomas.

The Canyon freshman left no doubt Friday as to who is the best hurdler in the Foothill League, recording a dominant victory in the 100 hurdles and then holding off a late charge by Saugus senior Ashley Kramer in the 300 hurdles to sweep both championships on her home track, matching the efforts of freshman teammate Tiffini Stone, who doubled in the long jump and triple jump.

Thomas was clearly the class of the league throughout the year in the 100 hurdles, using her speed to pull away from the field in the second half of the race. That was the case again Friday, as she created a larger gap between the rest of the pack with every hurdle, posting a margin of victory of more than a second to prevail in 15.52.

The 300 hurdles was a different story for two reasons. First, Thomas wasn't the top qualifier, after Kramer clocked 48.44 to the freshman's 48.85 in Tuesday's prelims. And second, Kramer had been devoting the majority of her training in the 300 to make one final run at a league title before heading off to play soccer in college at New Mexico Highlands.

Thomas was quick out of the blocks in the 300, creating a gap early between her and Kramer. But the Saugus senior began to make up ground on the curve, pulling even after the fifth hurdle and remaining right with Thomas after they cleared the sixth hurdle.

Thomas then seemed to find an extra gear the final 40 meters, pulling away from Kramer on the final two hurdles to clock a season-best 45.19, with Kramer taking second in 46.78.

Thomas' mark ranks fifth among freshman statewide and second in school history, trailing only Cindy Byrne, who ran 43.47 in 1988. Only Cleveland of Reseda's Cherise Dixon (45.00) has posted a faster time in the area this season and only Harvard-Westlake of Studio City's Zaakirah Daniels (14.96) and Oak Park's Tayler Johnson, with a mark of 14.99, are faster locally in the 100 hurdles than Thomas, whose season best is 15.03.

Thomas has also positioned herself to go after the Foothill League records of 14.61 and 43.76 by Valencia's Katie Kirst in 2004. Saugus' Audry Williams holds the Santa Clarita Valley record in the 300 hurdles, clocking 42.25 in 1981, when the Centurions were in the Golden League.

TRACK AND FIELD: Saugus' Kado highlights lower-level success at Foothill League finals

| | Comments (0) |

I said before Friday's Foothill League track and field finals that I didn't have time to predict the outcome of the girls' JV races, but I certainly have time to recognize the winners, and there wasn't a more decorated champion at Canyon High than Saugus sophomore Merissa Kado.

Between Tuesday's 3,200 final and three more championship races Friday, Kado was the only JV athlete to capture four titles, following her victory at eight laps (11:44.76) with wins in the 800 (2:25.69), 1,600 (5:17.05) and as a member of the 1,600 relay (4:15.98).

Kado's marks would've placed her fifth in the varsity 800, sixth in the varsity 1,600 and eighth in the varsity 3,200.

Another Saugus sophomore, Nicole Penick, won three events, capturing the 200 (27.55) and 400 (59.92), along with competing on the 1,600 relay.

In the boys' competition, Saugus sophomore, Alex Ruther, also had a big meet, winning the frosh/soph 800 (2:04.40), 1,600 (4:33.89) and taking second to teammate Kurt Lutz in the 3,200 by a 10:10.83 to 10:11.43 margin.

Ruther would've finished seventh in the varsity 800, fifth in the varsity 1,600 and seventh in the varsity 3,200.

Canyon sophomore Kenny Stone swept the frosh/soph 100 (11.69), 200 (23.60) and ran anchor on the Cowboys' 400 relay (45.79). Canyon's Andre Beets (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles), Nathan Wolitarsky (shot put, discus) and Saugus' Steven Lowder (long jump, triple jump) were also multiple-event winners at the frosh/soph level.

West Ranch's Kimberlei Comrie pulled off the rare 100 (13.42) and shot put (30-2 1/2) double to win girls' JV titles.

TRACK AND FIELD: Breaking down the Foothill League finals

| | Comments (0) |

Forgive me in advance, but I won't have time to break down boys' freshman/sophomore and girls' junior varsity events. But the stars of the future will definitely set some meet records Friday night.

As for the varsity events at the Foothill League track and field championship meet, here's a quick rundown of what to expect at Canyon High. Remember, these are for entertainment purposes only.

GIRLS' 400 RELAY
Although Valencia boasts the fastest seed at 49.10, Saugus defeated Canyon and Valencia in their dual meets. Jenna Vincej and Jamie Molacek are two of the most improved runners in the league for Saugus, which also boasts the best anchor in Amber Wright.
The pick: Saugus by a narrow margin over Valencia and Canyon.

BOYS' 400 RELAY
Canyon has come on strong in recent weeks, with a healthy Shane Habberstad, but Valencia has an explosive group with Brock Vereen and Zach Tartabull. Don't count out West Ranch with Ross Bacon, or Saugus with Josh Coefield on the anchor.
The pick: Valencia at the line ahead of Saugus and Canyon.

GIRLS' 1,600
West Ranch's Jennifer Owen posted a victory at Saugus, although the pace was painfully pedestrian. The fastest time by Saugus' Anne Randall is well ahead of Owen's and the rest of the field, but weather conditions cooperating will have a lot to say about the outcome of this race.
The pick: Randall atones for earlier loss to Owen, but don't count out Saugus' Stephanie Bulder.

BOYS' 1,600
So much talent in this field and it doesn't even include Saugus' Brandon Jauregui, who went undefeated at this distance in league dual meets. Golden Valley's Seth Totten has the most upside, Canyon's Anthony Pizzo has shown incredible determination, Hart's Sam Peckham finally gets his chance to upstage his older opponents and Valencia's Falco DiGiallonardo has the most dangerous kick.
The pick: These races usually come down to the wire, which is why DiGiallonardo's kick is the difference.

GIRLS' 100 HURDLES
Canyon freshman Taylor Thomas could be challenged early in the race by Hart's Ariel Hauck and Saugus' Ashley Kramer, but her speed the second half of the race will be the difference.
The pick: Thomas by at least a half-second.

BOYS' 100 HURDLES
Hurdle races are always unpredictable, but West Ranch's Matt Harmon has been consistent all season, which gives him the edge in a race that doesn't feature another runner capable of challenging the 15-second barrier.
The pick: Harmon ahead of Saugus' Shahan Khalighi and Golden Valley's Dylan Olson.

GIRLS' 400
Saugus' Alex Hampton already has the school record, but she doesn't have a win over Golden Valley's Lauren Hackney, who knocked her off in their head-to-head battle during the regular season. Without Valencia's Aly Drake in the event, it appears to be a two-person race.
The pick: Hampton atones for the earlier loss and lowers her school record.

BOYS' 400
One of the most balanced fields in the meet, with five runners qualifying with 51-second marks.
The pick: Canyon's Chris Rivas delivers on his home track over Valencia's Malcolm Flowers

GIRLS' 100
If the race is won on experience and potential, then it's Saugus' Amber Wright. If it comes down to guts and determination, especially if the wind is a factor, then it's Saugus' Jamie Molacek. And pure athleticism says it could be Valencia's Faith Anumba.
The pick: Molacek doesn't like to lose on the soccer field and she'll prevail here as well, just ahead of Wright.

BOYS' 100
Nobody has shown they can beat Saugus' Josh Coefield in a head-to-head race, although West Ranch's Ross Bacon is explosive in his own right.
The pick: Coefield, especially if Saugus doesn't win the 400 relay.

SWIMMING: Cleveland remains ahead of pack at West Valley League finals

| | Comments (0) |

It came down to the final event when Cleveland of Reseda competed against Birmingham of Lake Balboa during their regular-season dual meet. Although the margin wasn't as close Thursday at the West Valley League finals, the local rivals should put on quite a show at the City Section swimming prelims and finals in the coming weeks.

Cleveland won only two events, but the Cavaliers' depth allowed the defending City champions to prevail 453-415 over Birmingham, which received two victories from Darin Weltsch and wins in the 200 free (1:37.96) and 400 free relays (3:34.15).

Weltsch captured the 100 backstroke (59.52) and 200 individual medley (2:07.90) to become one of three multiple-event winners, along with Kennedy of Granada Hills' Gary Arthur -- 100 butterfly (54.36) and 200 free (1:48.16) -- and Taft of Woodland Hills' Nico Kryspin, who doubled in the 50 (22.69) and 100 frees (51.20).

Granada Hills' Grant Richman triumphed in the 500 free (5:08.54) and Cleveland's Alika Bautista won the 100 breaststroke (1:05.14), along with contributing to the Cavaliers' victorious 200 medley relay (1:50.53).

Cleveland won six events in the girls' competition, including the 200 medley relay (1:58.70) and 400 free relay (3:53.25), taking runner-up (1:47.61) to El Camino Real of Woodland Hills (1:45.28) in the 200 free relay.

Valerie Orellana doubled in the 100 backstroke (1:03.66) and 100 butterfly (59.67) for the Cavaliers, who received wins from Kristina Choi in the 200 free (2:03.51) and Jessica Chong in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.28).

Taft's Chelsea Lim continued her journey toward repeating as City champion in the sprint freestyle events, sweeping the 50 free (25.55) and 100 free (55.45).

Granada Hills' Bianca Valencia captured the 200 IM (2:20.24) and teammate Samantha Elam tied ECR freshman Evelyn Jovic in the 500 free, both clocking 5:42.78.

SWIMMING: Record swims weren't limited to varsity races at Foothill League finals

| | Comments (0) |

There were a total of 20 meet or Santa Clarita Valley records set Thursday at the Foothill League swim final, but not all of them belonged to varsity athletes.

Led by Melanie Onnen's double in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events, Hart of Newhall set eight junior varsity records to sweep the boys' and girls' titles to go along with both varsity championships.

Onnen broke a nine-year-old record in the 100 free by clocking 57.42, which followed a 2:05.27 in the 200 free that lowered her own standard from Tuesday's prelims.

Cherise Swindell also lowered her own mark from Tuesday in the 50 free by clocking 26.36 for the Indians, who set JV records in the 200 medley relay (2:03.19), 200 free relay (1:49.08) and 400 free relay (4:01.13), the latter a seven-second drop from a 2002 record.

Hart's Daniel Stevenson set the lone boys' JV meet individual record, clocking 27.41 in the 50 backstroke. Valencia produced a record in the boys' JV 200 free relay (1:36.66).

TRACK AND FIELD: Big Knight for Aquino twins, Highland's Davis at Golden League final

| | Comments (0) |

Competing in their final meet on their home track, Knight of Palmdale twins Ulises and Uriel Aquino left quite an impression Thursday at the Golden League track and field finals.

Uriel Aquino bested his brother 4:25.66 to 4:26.94 in the 1,600 and added another victory over senior teammate Gabriel Martinez in the 800 by a 2:01.02 to 2:01.89 margin. Ulises Aquino completed the distance sweep for the Hawks with a win in the 3,200, holding off Lancaster's Pedro Zaragoza 9:53.48 to 9:57.63.

While Knight was showing its strength in the longer races, Highland of Palmdale junior Jessica Davis was dominating the sprints, sweeping the 100 (11.99), 200 (24.47) and 400 (58.43) to take another step on the road to defending her state title in the 200.

Jazmine Hayes captured the 100 hurdles (17.09), Braxton Cullors prevailed in the 800 (2:26.22) and Caylie Choate won the 3,200 (11:57.60) for the Bulldogs, who also triumphed in the 1,600 relay (4:01.09).

In the boys' competition, Antelope Valley's Davion Robinson doubled in the 110 hurdles (15.25) and 300 hurdles (40.46), with Eastside's Marcellus Golliday -- who helped the Lions capture the first league title in any sport in school history -- winning the long jump (24-1 3/4) the 100 (11.00) and contributing to the victorious 400 relay (43.32), along with taking third in the triple jump (42-4 1/2).

Eastside also received victories from Dawayne Dixon in the 200 (22.73) and Steven Sims in the shot put (48-7).

Golden League girls' champion Quartz Hill won four events, led by Sabrina Graham's 35-4 in the triple jump. Lauren Graham cleared 11-7 in the pole vault, Regan Mew took the 300 low hurdles (49.14) and the Rebels captured the 400 relay (49.05).

TRACK AND FIELD: Paraclete's Chapman doesn't need a car, she's just fast

| | Comments (0) |

Pardon the Tracy Chapman reference, but Paraclete of Lancaster's Melanise Chapman continued to build momentum Thursday toward the Southern Section Div. IV championship meet by sweeping the 100 and 200 at the Alpha League track and field finals at L.A. Baptist High in North Hills.

Chapman clocked a lifetime-best 11.76 to regain the school record from Ashley Woodford, who was second in a personal-best 11.80. Chapman later lowered her school record in the 200 by clocking 24.08, with Woodford taking runner-up (24.64) and Chelsey Washington finishing third (25.77), as the Spirits swept the top five spots.

Chapman, Woodford, Washington and Mariah Gibson won the 400 relay in 47.67, Paraclete's second-fastest time this season. Gibson also added victories in the high jump -- clearing 5-6 to equal her school record -- and the 300 hurdles (47.99).

Siera Hearne also put herself in position to score well for Paraclete at the Div. IV final, defeating teammate and school-record holder Saibra Noel 39-1 1/2 to 37-8 in the shot put, along with winning the pole vault (10-0) and long jump (16-9). Noel threw the discus 106-5 to defeat Hearne (98-11).

Melissa Bauer doubled in the 1,600 (5:41.74) and 3,200 (12:02.84), with Sabrina Huelga capturing the 800 (2:29.76) and Washington taking the 400 (58.4). Sara Brookman rounded out Paraclete's victories with an effort of 30-1 in the triple jump.

Wes Washington won the boys' 800 title (1:58.31), Robbie Thompson captured the 400 (52.19) and Scott Bauer triumphed in the 3,200 (10:34.40) for the Spirits, who also took the 1,600 relay (3:37.99). L.A. Baptist's John Gilbertson broke up a potential distance sweep for Paraclete by winning the 1,600 (4:38.61).

Drew Engler cleared 5-8 to win the high jump for Paraclete, Brandon Owen captured the shot put (47-5) and Corey Rodrigo took the discus throw (126-9 1/2) for the Spirits. Campbell Hall of North Hollywood's Ben Schreck won the pole vault (12-0).

Village Christian of Sun Valley's Daniel Rodriquez doubled in the 110 hurdles (16.93) and 300 hurdles (44.66). Teammate Michael Sower won the long jump (19-7) and triple jump (40-9).

BOYS' TRACK AND FIELD: Lions look Sharpe, despite runner-up team finish

| | Comments (0) |

Jules Sharpe is a 7-foot high jumper, but the Oaks Christian of Westlake Village senior demonstrated he could be a threat to win two Southern Section Div. IV titles May 23 at Cerritos College.

Sharpe produced a lifetime-best mark of 46-5 1/4 in the triple jump to set school and stadium records at the Tri-Valley League track and field final Thursday at Carpinteria High, helping the Lions take second with 119 points behind St. Bonaventure of Ventura (147), which won the 100, 200, 400 and both relays.

Sharpe, a Stanford signee, cleared 6-8 1/4 to set the stadium record in the high jump and took second to teammate Niko DiMartino in the long jump by a 22-5 1/2 to 20-5 1/2 margin.

The Lions also enjoyed a big day in the distance events, especially Charlie Petrie, who produced a 60-second split on his final lap to rally from a 10-meter deficit and defeat Oak Park's James Goldstein 9:34.50 to 9:34.81 in the 3,200.

"It was the most ridiculous kick in a distance race that I've ever seen," Oaks Christian coach Wes Smith said. "Charlie raised his arms after he won and we had like 30 kids storm the infield in celebration. We never get that kind of response from a distance race. But it was an unbelievable moment, one I'll remember for years."

Not to be outdone, Hunter Hays picked up a victory in the 800, defeating Oak Park's Colin Rickard 2:00.45 to 2:01.19.

Hays nearly rallied to defeat Goldstein in the 1,600, negative-splitting the final 800 before coming up short 4:28.01 to 4:28.67.

Austin Gill cleared 13-3 in the pole vault for Oak Park's only other victory.

GIRLS' TRACK AND FIELD: Win a long time coming for Oaks Christian, by the narrowest of margins

| | Comments (0) |

Some league track and field finals aren't scored for team points. The Tri-Valley League proved Thursday night at Carpinteria High that every last one mattered to determine its girls' champion.

Relying on a three-way tie for fourth place in the high jump, Oaks Christian of Westlake Village scored 135 1/3 points to get past last year's co-champion La Reina of Thousand Oaks -- which finished with 135 -- securing the first girls' track and field title in school history. Oaks Christian became the fourth school in the 17-year history of the Tri-Valley League to win the girls' championship, joining Carpinteria, Oak Park and La Reina.

With the 1,600 relay completed, Oaks Christian needed 16 points in the high jump to secure a tie with La Reina, thus clinching the league title based on their undefeated dual-meet record. The Lions wounded up getting 16 1/3, as Lauren Anderson placed second (5-0) behind Oak Park's Tayler Johnson (5-4), Annalise Bachman took third (5-0) and Tayloe finished tied at 4-10 with Carpinteria's Shelby Dunlap and Oak Park's Kori Denning, as the Eagles finished third with 128 1/3 points.

La Reina also lost out on a potential point when Oak Park's Riley McCullough was awarded sixth place over the Regents' Lauren Hearne in the 1,600 based on a thousandths of a second tiebreaker after the runners both crossed in 5:37.81. La Reina coach Robert Lopez protested the decision, but it was not overturned.

Anderson also came through with a school record of 33-4 in the triple jump and Ally Courtnall doubled in the 100 (12.55) and 200 (25.55) -- setting a record in the latter -- while helping the Lions to second-place finishes in the 400 and 1,600 relays. Freshman Brianna Barrett took second in the long jump (16-4) and third in the 100 (12.70) and 200 (26.26) for the Lions.

Niki MacWhirter produced an important fourth-place finish in the 800 (2:23.38), one spot ahead of La Reina's Sarah Pearson (2:24.90), who ran a courageous triple, winning the 1,600 (5:04.54) and taking third in the 3,200 (11:40). Tara Blanchard competed in four events for La Reina, winning the 400 (1:00.55) and 800 (2:18.53), anchoring the Regents' 1,600 relay (4:01.02) and taking fourth in the 200 (26.94).

Oak Park's Johnson continued her march toward a big day at the Southern Section Div. III final, adding to her high jump win with victories in the 100 hurdles (15.56), long jump (17-5 1/4), as well as a leg on the Eagles' winning 400 relay (49.59). Teammates Kayla Batom won the 300 hurdles (46.14), Madison Stark captured the pole vault (10-4) and Melissa Skiba set a stadium record with a 10:53.10 in the 3,200.

Boys Baskeball: Buckley honors coach Hamilton

From the Buckley School in Sherman Oaks website

Coach Hamilton Welcomes a Son, Is Named CIF Coach of the Year
Posted May 1, 2009

Last month, we featured Boys Varsity Basketball Coach Mike Hamilton and his new African American Mentorship program in this column. This month Hamilton is back in the Update with two pieces of breaking news: over Spring Break his wife Lisa gave birth to Triston Michael Jay Hamilton, and Coach Hamilton was named CIF Coach of the Year.

Coach will tell you that Triston's birth trumps his award, so we'll start there. Triston was born on April 10, and weighed 7.5 lbs and was 21 inches long. He is the Hamiltons' second child. Triston's big sister, Madison, is three years old.

CIF Coach of the Year is a tremendous honor. Coach Hamilton was selected by his peers for this honor, calling out his excellence in coaching. This is Hamilton's sixth year coaching at Buckley, and this season the boys varsity basketball team, which is dominated by young players and had only one senior on its roster, brought home the school's sixth consecutive Liberty League title and made it to the semi-final round in playoffs.

"Coach Hamilton continues to bring success to the boys' program with his tireless work ethic," said Byrd Newman-Milic, Buckley Upper School athletic director. "Few coaches work as hard or are as dedicated as Coach Hamilton. Mike has been worthy of this honor for many years."

Baseball: Notre Dame recap from Tuesday

| | Comments (0) |

Notre Dame won 7 to 6 today at Brookside Park in Pasadena, despite a bottom
of the 7th threat staged by St.Francis, who scored two in their last at bat,
but fell one short in the end.

With bases loaded, one out, Knight short stop Ranny Lowe snared a line drive
and stepped on second to record Notre Dame's 20th victory of the season
(20-4, 8-1 Mission League).

RHP Josh Goossen-Brown pitched 7 complete and recorded the win.

For the Knights, Center Fielder Kelly Dugan produced 4 of the Knights runs
at the plate, including a two run homer (365' to Right Center) in the first
inning, and he scored once. 2nd Baseman Casey Ryan was 3 for 4, with a
double, scoring twice himself. Catcher Nick La Face hit a 380' foot ground
rule double that would have left the park at most high school fields. Matt
Lathuras was 2 for 4, with 1 RBI, scoring once.

But the Knights also left 8 men on base over the course of the game and put
up 12 hits, however only two of those after the 4th inning.

St. Francis, they started slow at the plate, scoring one in the first and
then not again until the 4th, when they put up 3. Batting in the two hole
left fielder Nick Gentili had a triple, went 2 for 4, and scored twice with
two RBI's. 1st baseman A.J. Berglund had a run scoring double in the 7th to
put St. Francis within one run, but then got caught off base in the double
play that ended the game.

TRACK AND FIELD: Five things learned from Foothill League prelims on Cinco de Mayo

| | Comments (0) |

The Foothill League track and field prelims Tuesday were much like the early rounds of the NCAA men's basketball tournament -- all about surviving and advancing.

Athletes had to survive the heat and swirling winds on the track, while trying to avoid any hiccups en route to advancing to Friday's championship heats.

Here's 5 things that were learned after taking in the action at Canyon High (also make sure to check back late Thursday or early Friday for event breakdowns after the championship heats are finalized following scratches).

1. Ashley Kramer means business in the 300 hurdles
The Saugus senior sent a message to Canyon freshman Taylor Thomas and the rest of the field in the 300-meter low hurdles that she's focused on concluding her career with at least one Foothill League title, a total that could increase depending on her relay success. After qualifying in the middle of the pack in the 100 hurdles, Kramer posted the fastest qualifying time of 48.44 in the 300 hurdles and should make Thomas' bid to sweep the hurdles a daunting one in the final league competition of her career. Thomas looked strong in the 100 hurdles, clocking 15.61, putting herself in position to go under 15 seconds for the first time this season Friday.

2. The boys' 1,600 could be the most competitive championship race
Despite the field missing the guy who went undefeated at this distance during the league season -- Saugus' Brandon Jauregui, who clocked a personal-best 1:58.92 in the 800 on Tuesday -- the pack is still loaded, with four legitimate challengers for the title, with a couple of darkhorses as well. Canyon's Anthony Pizzo boasts the top qualifying time at 4:32.57, but Valencia's Falco DiGiallonardo (4:33.01), Golden Valley's Seth Totten (4:33.61) and Hart's Sam Peckham (4:33.70) are all capable of winning. Or could Canyon's Michael Noris continue his late-season surge and win the race on his home track. Expect a mad dash to the finish in the final 100 meters Friday.

3. Jennifer Owen has some work ahead of her
The West Ranch sophomore could be one of the league's stars of the future. As for Friday, she'll have to battle almost the entire Saugus cross country team in order to win the 1,600 title. Owen did win the 1,600 race at Saugus, jogging the first 800 near 3 minutes before surging the final two laps. But Anne Randall, Stephanie Bulder and Kaylin Mahoney aren't likely to make life so easy for Owen this time around. Should weather conditions cooperate, expect all four runners to be under the at-large qualifying mark of 5:06 with a couple having the ability to produce another sub-5 clocking. Aside from Owen, Matt Harmon (110 and 300 hurdles) is West Ranch's best hope to capture an individual title.

4. Josh Coefield is on the fast track to a sprint sweep
After capturing four events in Saugus' Foothill League title-clinching win over Hart, Coefield had a less-stressful day Tuesday, posting the top qualifying marks in the 100 (11.35) and 200 (22.82). West Ranch's Ross Bacon and Valencia's Zach Tartabull won't make Coefield's bid for the sprint double easy, but if the Centurions can open the meet with a victory in the 400 relay, expect a big night on the track for the senior standout.

5. Some unheralded talent is ready to produce a show-stopping performance
Will it be Golden Valley's Lauren Hackney in the 400? Valencia's Faith Anumba in the 100? Hart's Anthony Soto in the 800? Canyon's Shane Habberstad in the 300 hurdles? Saugus' Brianna Jauregui in the 3,200? Or West Ranch's Jack Carey in the 1,600? Someone will successfully steal the spotlight and shine under the lights Friday. We'll just wait and see who rises to the occasion.

SWIMMING: Fast times at Hart High....and it's only the prelims

| | Comments (0) |

Jordan Danny, Maggie Hanson and Nick Korth didn't waste any time launching what promises to be an assault on the Foothill League championship records at Thursday's final by setting meet standards at Tuesday's prelims at Santa Clarita Aquatic Center.

Danny lowered her own record in the 200-yard individual medley from 2:04.83 last year to 2:04.75, setting her up for the possibility Thursday of improving on her mark of 2:03.18 from last season's Southern Section Div. II final. The USC-bound Danny also put herself in position to break her own record of 1:01.73 in the 100 breaststroke by clocking 1:02.87.

Hanson, who set Hart's program record in the 200 freestyle (1:54.07) last Wednesday, broke a 12-year-old meet record with an effort of 1:54.94. Saugus' Heather Boylan held the previous mark of 1:55.07, set in 1997. Hanson qualified second for Thursday's 100 butterfly final with a mark of 58.14, trailing defending-champion and record-holder Kearsten Livingstone of Canyon (57.90).

Nick Korth took down one of the most prestigious boys' records in the books, clocking 57.26 in the 100 breaststroke to erase the 2004 mark of 57.55 set by Saugus' John Criste, who went on to swim at Mission Viejo and Stanford. Korth clocked a program-record 57.59 last Wednesday against Saugus, before lowering the mark again Tuesday.

Golden Valley's Michelle Duraj posted the fastest qualifying time in the 50 free (24.39) and 100 free (53.80), with Hart freshman Nicole Antoniuk leading the way in the 500 free (5:11.59) and senior teammate Chelsea Griffiths in pursuit of lowering her own meet record in the 100 backstroke (58.62) by clocking a prelim time of 59.37.

Valencia's Bob Hwang is the top qualifier in the 100 butterfly (51.94) and 200 individual medley (1:59.15) and Canyon's Keaunui Harris posted the fastest prelim marks in the 100 free (47.90) and 100 backstroke (54.22).

Hart's Konrad Antoniuk is leading the pack in the 200 free (1:48.30) and 500 free (4:43.89), with Valencia's Bryan Kitchener swimming the fastest prelim time in the 50 free (22.25).

All the individual finals, as well as relays, will be contested Thursday. In the boys' team competition, Hart and Valencia are expected to battle for the title, while Canyon will try to knock off Hart in the girls' meet.

Baseball: Goossen-Brown on a roll for Notre Dame

Goossen-Brown Picks Up Two Wins Over Chaminade In One Week.

On Friday night Sherman Oaks Notre Dame defeated Chaminade 6-5 in 8 innings, RHP Josh Goossen-Brown closed the 8th inning to capture the win.

Goossen-Brown also had a run scoring double and scored twice, including a delayed steal of home in the second.

Earlier in the week on Tuesday, Goossen-Brown started the game completing 6 innings (1Run,3 Hits,5K's,0 BB) and turned over a 3-1 lead to the closer.

Goossen-Brown was asked to come back in to "save" the game in the 7th inning with the score now 3-2, with no outs, the tying run on 3rd, and the go ahead on 1st. Two pitches later the game was over.

Goossen-Brown's first pitch produced a 4-4-3 double play (nicely crafted by 2nd baseman Casey Ryan while holding the runner at 3rd). His second pitch produced a ground out to first.

Baseball: Notre Dame weekend recap

| | Comments (0) |

Sat 5/2/9 ... Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks won three games in the last 24
hours.

On Friday afternoon they defeated Chaminade 6-5 in 8 innings. The team
pitched by committee, using four arms to get the job done. Matt Lathuras
started and went 2.1. Conner Garelick pitched 3.1 scoreless innings (but
left with an injury), Nico Silardi went 2.2 scoreless and Josh Goossen-Brown
closed the 8th to capture the win. When relieved in the 8th Silardi moved
back to Center Field and made a great inning ending catch out there to
preserve the tie, allowing the Knights to win it in the bottom of the frame.

Chamindaes Left Fielder Tim Rowley hit a 3 run home run in the second
inning. Mat Troupe pitched the 8th for the Eagles and suffered the loss.

Kelly Dugan was 2-4 on the day, including a solo home run (his 5th) and a
single with bases loaded in the 8th for the walk off win. He scored twice
and put up 2 RBI's. Josh Goossen-Brown had a run scoring double and scored
twice, including a delayed steal of home in the second.

Pedro Aldape pitched a complete controlled game in the first of two with
West Covina today (8 Hits, 7 K's, 1 BB) winning 9-5. David Armendariz led
the way at the plate going 3 for 3 (+ BB), just a home run shy of the cycle
(single, double, triple). He also scored twice (1 RBI). Brendan Dohs, Peyton
Milone and Kelly Dugan had two RBI's each.

David Armendariz, Torin Westfall and Greg Restivo combined efforts on the
mound in the second game for the 8-2 Knights win. Eric Walbridge provided
the fireworks from the DH spot. He was 3 for 4, including a two run homer
and a double creating 4 RBI's. Nick Reyes reached in all four at bats going
3 for 3 with a walk on the day.

Knights are 19-4 Overall and 7-1 in Mission League. Next up is St. Francis
on Tuesday afternoon at Brookside Park in Pasadena.

Boys Basketball: West come back from 21 down to win all-star game

| | Comments (0) |

The Valley Sports Foundation Battle of the Valley all-star games always have great talent, great coaching and high drama.

The 13th annual event at Cal State Northridge was no different Saturday night as the West boys' team came back from a 21-point deficit to win in double overtime 96-95.

Cleveland of Reseda's Prince Obasi made a rebound layup after a Terran Carter miss to give the West the win.

"I couldn't believe we had a chance there at the end," Obasi said. "I just made sure I squared up and banked it in. The game was crazy."

CSUN-bound Terran Carter of Taft of Woodland Hills scored 21 points and had nine rebounds to lead the West.

Carter's second-half dunking wowed the crowd.

Taft's Michael Williams had 18 points, including a 3-pointer with 31.2 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score at 86.

Evan Smith of Calabasas, who signed with USC two weeks ago, scored 15 points and Obasi had 14 points and six rebounds.

Cal-bound Bak Bak of Village Christian of Sun Valley had 20 points, 15 rebounds, four blocks and two steals to lead the East.

Ryan Watkins of Reseda had 13 points and 10 rebounds and made the tying basket at the end of the first overtime to send the game into a second extra period.

Randall Harris of Reseda had 10 points and six assists.

The halftime slam dunk contest wasn't as exciting as in years past, when Cleveland of Reseda's Nick Young (now with the Washington Wizards) was taking off from the free-throw line and throwing down monstrous dunks, but Steven Thornton of Golden Valley did just enough to come away with a victory against Monroe of North Hills' Demetrius Perkins in the final round.

Simi Valley's Brad Lewis won the 3-point shootout.

Boys Basketball: Former Campbell Hall coach Terry Kelly going to Georgia

We finally know where former Campbell Hall coach Terry Kelly will be coaching next year.

Kelly has accepted a position as coach and administrator at Holy Innocents school in Atlanta, Georgia.

Kelly said the school has 1,500 students and is the second largest episcopal school in the country.

Kelly said the school has two gymansiums and the auxiliary gym is as nice as Cal St. Northridge's Matadome.

Good luck coach Kelly

TRACK AND FIELD: The dynamic dozen performers who stole the show at the Ventura County Championships

| | Comments (0) |

The list of past champions and record holders at the Ventura County track and field championships reads like a who's who of athletic achievement. Several area standouts joined that honor roll Friday night with show-stopping performances at Moorpark High.

Here's a rundown on the stars who shined brightest under the lights, and, in some cases, in the rain at this year's county meet:

Maxwell Dyce, Moorpark -- Dyce was responsible for the Musketeers' only two invitational victories, but he did so in dominant fashion, winning the 100-meter dash in a wind-aided 10.37 (the fastest mark in the state under any conditions) and followed it up with a victory in the 200 in a school-record and personal-best 21.38, the No. 2 wind-legal time in the state this year behind Mission Hills of San Diego's Joe Cooks (21.30). All of this from a guy who is still not 100 percent recovered from a right hamstring injury suffered in the second meet of the season. It is scary to think where Dyce could be in five weeks time at the state meet.

Tara Blanchard, La Reina -- Few athletes love what they do more than Blanchard, who is carrying on the fine tradition established by older sister Sasha in producing one impressive performance after another for the Regents. Blanchard outkicked Moorpark's Lauren Rohach to win the 400 by a 58.35 to 59.12 margin, then came from last place 300 meters into the 800 to get by Oak Park's Kaycee Holcomb at the finish line, 2:21.24 to 2:21.47. Blanchard capped an exceptional meet by running down Ventura's anchor on the 1,600 relay to post a 57.4-second split, teaming with Kristin Wendel, Hanna Winter and Colleen Murphy to clock 4:00.60.

Thomas Garner, Royal -- Highlanders hurdles coach Heather Ream has a pretty good gig working with Garner, who continues to impress with every race or field event. After breaking a 34-year-old Marmonte League record in the 110-meter hurdles by clocking 14.20 against Agoura and Moorpark, Garner followed Friday by lowering an eight-year-old meet record by 0.01 to win in a wind-legal 14.17, atoning for a disappointing race at last year's county meet when he clipped the third to last hurdle and fell out of championship contention. Garner then defeated Ventura's Rogelio Reyes in the 300 hurdles, using an impressive close on the final four hurdles to prevail 38.98 to 39.36. Garner also found time to get some work in on the runway, winning the long jump competition with a mark of 22-4 1/2.

Saraina Hedgepeth, Rio Mesa -- Perhaps no athlete enjoyed a bigger breakthrough at the county meet than the Florida International-bound talent, who began the competition by leading off the Spartans' meet-record 400 relay and added wind-legal victories in the 100 and 200, helping Rio Mesa sweep the three events for the second year in a row. Hedgepeth teamed with Valexsia Droughn, Takiyah Cotton and Mariyah Lee to clock 47.31, good for the No. 6 mark in the state this year and just off their 47.13 at last year's state meet. She held off Newbury Park's Raven Chavanne 11.93 to 11.94 in the 100 and 24.70 to 24.79 in the 200. About the only disappointment for Hedgepeth was watching Droughn reaggravate her left knee injury following the 100, which has the sophomore's status as uncertain for Tuesday's Pacific View League prelims.

Jules Sharpe, Oaks Christian -- It was an easy day for the Stanford-bound Sharpe in the high jump, as he cleared 6-6 before missing at 6-10 to take the competition. But his most impressive effort came in the triple jump, where he unleashed a winning effort of 44-9 3/4, setting himself up to score big points for the Lions at Thursday's Tri-Valley League finals, as well as the Southern Section Div. IV championship meet in three weeks.

Riley Nizdil, Rio Mesa -- The versatile talent said she felt like she was landing in a puddle in the high jump pit and in mud in the long jump pit, not to mention she was competing with two sprained ankles. But the junior still managed to win the triple jump on her last attempt with a mark of 35-4 -- Simi Valley's Jaimie McCormack produced a final jump of 35-3 -- and took second in the high jump by clearing 5-2, just behind Thousand Oaks' Lydia French (5-4). Nizdil could be the key performer in Rio Mesa's pursuit of a Southern Section Div. II title May 23.

Baseball: Saugus gets big win in Foothill League

| | Comments (0) |

Junior pitcher Tommy Kister of Saugus knew the importance of Fridays key Foothill League game with Hart of Newhall and came through with one of his best performances of the season.

Kister threw five innings of shutout ball yielding seven hits with one strikeout and a walk in a 3-0 victory.

Saugus (12-10, 6-4) kept sole posession of third place and now is comfortably two games ahead of the Indians (11-10-1, 4-6).

A Saugus loss would have put the Centurions into a tie for third place with Hart holding the tiebreaker edge because of a 4-3, 11 inning victory.

While the outing was not dominating, the key was Kister kept his team right in the game and his teammates took care of the rest.

"It was basically a must win for us," Kister said. "I told coach I wanted the ball, I wanted this game. I had faith in my team and I got some great defense behind me that took the pressure off early."

Kister put pressure on himself giving up five hits in the first two innings but struck out Jon Bennett in the first and received a huge catch from left fielder James Threw in the second. Both outs left the bases loaded for a Hart team that stranded 12 runners.

Aaron Cooper and Threw scored on fielders choice ground outs in the second and Brett Piper had a run scoring single in the seventh to account for all of the runs.

Spencer Souza singled three times, was hit by a pitch and stole two bases to lead Hart.

Trevor Brown pitched five innings of two hit ball with three strikeouts and three walks.

Hart had one last chance in the seventh after Cal-bound Devin Rodriguez doubled and Souza was hit by a pitch but pinch hitter Jeremy Villalovos struck out against Kyle Hooper to end the game.

Hooper pitched two innings of relief to pick up the save for Kister, who also threw four innings in Wednesdays loss.

FIELD AND TRACK: It's not a misprint, especially if you compete for Canyon

| | Comments (0) |

With second place in the Foothill League at stake, the Canyon girls again played the field Thursday against Valencia and came up a big winner, prompting Cowboys' coach Paul Broneer to refer to it as the "Canyon field and track meet."

Like they have all season, the Cowboys relied on timely victories on the track -- none bigger than Hayley Parkinson's rally in the final 200 meters of the 3,200 to defeat Valencia's Laura Bloom -- and dominant depth in the six field events to record a 73-63 win in a twilight meet that set the stage for what's come May 8 at the league finals.

Canyon's boys were even more dominant in the field and combined their 36-point margin with seven victories on the track to win 99-37 to finish second as well.

Parkinson's victory in 11:27.8, combined with Layana White winning the high jump (5-2) gave Canyon a 73-58 lead, which clinched the meet, despite Valencia's school record 3:58.9 on the 1,600 relay.

Canyon held a 44-10 final margin in the field events, with freshman Tiffini Stone winning the long jump (16-9), triple jump (31-7) and tying for second in the high jump with Valencia's Faith Anumba (4-8).

Courtney Saunders doubled in the shot put (38-1) and discus throw (120-3 1/2) and Gillian Lopez (9-0) led a sweep of the pole vault.

Canyon's 34-point edge in the field events was its second-largest in five league meets. The Cowboys outscored West Ranch 43-11, Saugus 36-18, Golden Valley 42-12 and Hart of Newhall 46-8.

Canyon outscored only Golden Valley and Hart on the track in league competition, yet the Cowboys still finished second behind four-time champion Saugus.

Although freshman Taylor Thomas swept the 100 and 300 hurdles in 15.3 and 48.1, Parkinson's victory -- the Cowboys' only other triumph on the track -- might have been the most pleasant surprise for Canyon, since Aly Drake and Jasmine Hall took first and second in the 400, Drake and Linnea Herren were first and second in the 800 and Sarah Adams won the 1,600 for the Vikings.

Drake's mark of 57.6 in the 400 lowered her own school record.

Falco DiGiallonardo provided the most exciting win for the Valencia boys, clocking a 62-second final lap on the 1,600 to defeat Canyon's Anthony Pizzo 4:32.1 to 4:34.4.
