HS FOOT: Suspended ex-Crespi standout Fauria to transfer from Notre Dame

| | Comments (0) |

Two days after news broke about former Crespi High of Encino standout tight end Joe Fauria being suspended for his upcoming sophomore season at University of Notre Dame, Fauria has been granted a requested release from the Fighting Irish with plans to transfer to another major-college football program.

"I just want everyone to know that I'm not transferring for football reasons. Notre Dame has always been good to me," Fauria said. "I was supposed to be the No. 2 tight end, which means I wasn't going to be the starter, but I was still going to play a lot."

Fauria, a 6-foot-7, 245-pounder who was among the nation's top recruits prior to last season, admitted he was being punished for a disciplinary infraction several months ago but did not elaborate.

"I don't want to go into great detail, but the truth was I was mistreated. The punishment did not fit the crime," Fauria said. "Anyone who knows me knows I'm a funloving guy. ... I'm going to miss my teammates and my friends. I worked hard and I battled (alongside) those guys."

As a freshman, Fauria played sparingly, appearing in three games without catching a pass.

In Notre Dame's annual spring scrimmage this past April, he caught two passes for 17 yards.

Fauria, who said he has a 3.0 grade-point average, is hoping to land at a Pacific-10 university, but nothing is certain.

"I don't know where I'm going to end up," he said.

One thing for sure is Fauria has strong bloodlines. His uncle, Christian, played 13 NFL seasons. Two other uncles, Lance and Quinn, played college football, and his mother, Julie, was a top women's basketball player at College of the Canyons.

At Crespi, Fauria caught 35 passes for 518 yards and five touchdowns and recorded five sacks as a senior. He was also standout in basketball, volleyball and track.

City Section League movement: Van Nuys stepping up

| | Comments (0) |

According to Van Nuys football coach Sean Pollard, Van Nuys has been placed in the West Valley League for the 2010-2011 school year.

The leage will now have seven teams as will the East Valley League and newly named Mission League, formerly the Valley Mission League.

It seems quite odd to put Van Nuys, which hasn't exactly dominated the East Valley into the West Valley with Taft of Woodland Hills, Chatsworth and El Camino Real of Woodland Hills.

Van Nuys certainly can't comepete in football or baseball.

I am sure there will be more to come of this situation. Stay tuned...

Youth Basketball: ARC Gorilla's going to nationals

| | Comments (0) |

The 13 and under seventh grade ARC Gorillas club basketball team based in the San Fernando Valley will be attending the AAU National tournament next week in Memphis, Tennessee.

The Gorillas, coached by longtime Calabasas resident Lee Garson, finished fourth last year and are seeded 11th for this years event.

Garson said the team is led by Marcellus Johnson, Parker Cartwright and Jeremy Lieberman.

Johnson is a 6'5 center, who attends Pinecrest of Van Nuys and is the younger brother of Campbell Hall forward James Johnson.

Cartwright is one of the best point guards in the country for his age group according to Garson, attends Sierra Canyon middle school and is the younger brother of Loyola guard Miles Cartwright.

Lieberman is a great shooter and could be headed to Calabasas for high school.

As for Garson, he has been coaching what seems like forever and is the father of current UCLA assistant Scott Garson, who played at Harvrad-Westlake of North hollywood from 1992-1994.

Boys Basketball: Sierra Canyon could land talented freshman

| | Comments (0) |

Sierra Canyon of Chatsworth upset Saugus Monday night in a Div. II silver bracket quarterfinal, 47-42.

But that wasn't the whole story.

Sierra Canyon was led by Derrick Newton, a 6'5 forward, who just completed the eighth grade is still only 13 years old.

Newton scored a game high 17 points and showed great poise and finesse for a such a young player.

Newton will definitely be one to watch in the next four years.

Khia Jones, a part time starter at Sierra Canyon of Chatsworth has transferred in, adding to a deep, talented Guards roster.

Boys Basketball: Daniels going to be a major recruit for Taft

| | Comments (0) |

If De'Andre Daniels from Taft of Woodland Hills continues to improve at the rapid rate he is moving at right now, he could have his pick of colleges to go to come the 2011-2012 season.

Daniels could be the regions most improved player after scoring 25 points and grabbing nine rebounds in a summer league game against Agoura Monday night.

The 6'9 wing showed improved skills and a fluidness to his game not seen ever since he landed at Renaissance Academy in La Canada via Louisiana two years ago.

Daniels had potential but was raw his sophomore year and it is now just starting to come out.

Having to sit out of varsity competition because he transferred, Daniels must have been working on his game in secret.

He had a dunk in the second half that brought the crowd to its feet, showing his amazing athletic ability.

His father, LaRon, said Kentucky, Virginia, Memphis, UNLV, and Utah have offered scholaships and more colleges are expected to do so this week.

Daniles also received good news two weeks ago when the NCAA sent a letter confirming it will give Daniels an extra year to gain full eligibility for the 2012 season.

Daniels will play at Taft next year but will likely play the 2011 season not in California.

Football: Montana chooses Washington

| | Comments (0) |

After considering more than 14 colleges and visitng a dozen or so, Oaks Christian of Westlake Village quarterback Nick Montana has settled on one.

Montana committed to the University of Washington and its new coach Steve Sarkissian.

Montana's pledge comes on the heels of a visit he took last weekend.

Bill Redell, coach at Oaks Christian, weighed in on Montana's decision.

"I think (Steve) Sarkissian being there was the most influencing factor, Redell said. "He (Nick) was impressed with the coaching staff, facilities and the committment to bringing in top players."

Montana had many programs coming after him, including Georgia, Ohio St., Florida, LSU and Alabama to name a few.

"Washington has been down the last couple years and it is a situation where they need to bounce back but Nick can go in there and comeopete right away," Redell said.

Montana will team with Malcolm Jones, Zac Stout, Cassius Marsh, Erik Kohler and a host of other talented Oaks Christian teammates this upcoming season to try and go after the schools seventh consecutive section championship.

Boys Basketball: Jackson on his way back to Taft

| | Comments (0) |

If you thought the Taft of Woodland Hills boys basketball team already had enough talent on its roster, it is about to get a little deeper.

Mark Jackson, Jr., the son of former NBA star and current analyst for ABC/ESPN Mark Jackson, Sr., is in the process of transferring back to Taft.

Jackson played at Taft as a freshman but transferred to Calabasas when the family moved after that year.

Jackson left the team midway through last season for unknown reasons. Speculation was a differences with coaches, teammates and the administration.

"We were not happy with the coaching at Calabasas," Mark Jackson, Sr. said. "We were not happy with the committment to winning.

Jackson would be a welcomed addition to a Toreadros roster that features seniors Bryce Jones, De'Andre Daniels, Sam Natt and Pierson Williams, juniors Domonique Evans, Spencer Dinwiddie, Khiry Williams and Stephon Maxwell and sophomore Landon Drew.

Jackson would have to move back into the Taft attendance area to be eligible.

Taft will be playing eight consecutive days from June 20-28 at the War on the Floor tournament at Taft and the Fairfax Summer Classic at Fairfax High.

Boys basketball: Cleveland picks up two top guards

| | Comments (0) |

Cleveland of Reseda may have graduated Prince Obasi but two new players will be arriving in September.

J.R. Williams and Jason Moore are expected to transfer in from Taft. Both will be sophomores

Obviously with Taft's enormous depth it would have been hard to find a lot of playing time.

Williams and Moore should help returner Jason Johnson to keep the Cavaliers very competitive under hard nosed coach Osiris Nalls.

Boys Basketball: Notre Dame Looking Up

| | Comments (0) |

It wasn't so long ago the Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks boys basketball team and coach Bill Bedgood were among the top teams in the very competitive Mission League.

In fact, in 2007, Notre Dame was really good.

The last two seasons have been less than desired but things are looking good again at the Sherman Oaks campus.

Bedood is excited again and has some real nice young players to work with.

Jonathan Bell and Kennedy Edwards were freshman this past season and are expected to contribute a lot on the varsity in 2009-2010.

Bedgood is also high on three incoming freshman.

Ausar Madison, Antwon Johnson and Jahmel Taylor have been elementary and junior high standouts.

The trio is ready to make their mark at Notre Dame.

They already led St. Charles Middle School to championships in football and basketball this school year and want to do the same for Notre Dame.

Bedgood couldn't be more pleased.

"I think these guys can come in here and really leave a mark," Bedgood said. "they are very talented and we are looking forward to great things."

HS FOOT: Zirbel looking good for all-star game

| | Comments (0) |

Expect a breakout performance Sunday from Saugus running back Ryan Zirbel in the 13th annual Daily News East-West All-Star Football Game at Birmingham High in Lake Balboa. Kickoff is 3:30 p.m.

After rushing for more than 5,200 yards and scoring 79 touchdowns in his three-year career, Zirbel should be the dominant player for the East team based on his performance Tuesday in a practice scrimmage.

"Ryan was unbelievable. He looked really good," said East coach Dean Herrington of Alemany of Mission Hills. "He's a pretty impressive player. On one play, he scored on a 60-yard touchdown and was weaving across the field."

Perhaps Zirbel has a chip on his shoulder, too. The 5-foot-10, 190-pounder turned down his only scholarship offer to Portland State, partly because he expected more offers. But none came, so he plans to play JC football at College of the Canyons in Valencia and has been working out there the past few weeks with the Cougars.

For the West, among those who have impressed are quarterbacks Jordan Adamczyk (Canyon) and Morey Croson (Birmingham), running backs Trevion Johnson(North Hollywood) and Nick Bruce (Taft), receiver Ronald McCrory (Chaminade), offensive linemen Japeth Gordon (Canyon), Chris Costello (Crespi) and Andres Alvarez (Crespi), linebacker Chris Carter (Crespi), defensive back Oliver Johnson (Taft) and defensive lineman Timote Tonga (Birmingham).

Trevion Johnson, who is slated to start at running back for the West, could be an X factor. He's just 5-foot-4 and weighs 160 pounds but rushed for nearly 2,000 yards and scored 25 touchdowns this past season for the Huskies - including 377 yards in one game - but never received much publicity because North Hollywood won just three games and failed to make the City playoffs despite participating in one of the Valley area's weakest leagues.

"Trevion is just a little guy but he can really play. I like him a lot," said West coach Ed Croson of Chaminade.
