Boys' Basketball: Tidbits from the region
The War on the Floor girls' basketball tournament starts Friday with games at Pierce College and Taft High.
The 14-team event features several locals and national power Brea-Olinda.
Games continue Saturday and Sunday at Taft. In an odd scheduling quirk the championship is slated for Saturday night with other consolation games Sunday.
Taft, Oaks Christian, Alemany, Sylmar, Burroughs, L.A. Baptist, Bell-Jeff, Monroe, Birmingham, Fairfax, Corona Centennial, Canyon (Canyon Country and Brea-Olinda 2 will compete.
Crespi is hosting a boys summer showcase Saturday and Sunday.
Mater Dei, Fairfax, Santa Monica, Oak Park, El Camino Real and others are scheduled to participate.
The annual War on the Floor boys' tournament featuring 28 teams starts Saturday June 26 and continues through Tuesday June 29 at Pierce College and El Camino Real.
Taft, Dorsey, Pasadena, El Camino Real, Cleveland, Calabasas, Sylmar, Oaks Christian, Campbell Hall, Chatsworth, Saugus, Blair, Reseda, Renaissance Academy, Malibu, Paraclete, Saugus, Crescenta Valley, Highland, Northridge Academy, Montclair Prep, Crespi, Eastside, Birmingham, Washington Prep, Buckley, Ripon and Bell-Jeff will compete.
Sean Collyer is the new coach at St. Genevieve of Panorama City. Collyer previously was at Granada Hills eight years ago.
Brad Katz is back at Poly of Sun Valley after a three year hiatus.
Oaks Christian is still looking for a girls' coach. Conley Oliver has interviewed and Mario Trutanich could be next.
Windward freshman Chauncey Hill could be transferring to Price of Los Angeles.
Harvard-Westlake has two promising freshman coming in. One is Derrick Newton, a 6'6 forward from Sierra Canyon.
El Camino Real will get a boost from freshman Malik Haynes, Julian Richardson and Evan Wardlow.
Another top freshman, Jeremy Lieberman is expected to attend Malibu.
Crespi is getting Tyler Corteno.
