HS FOOT: Here's what's going on this weekend
FIVE TO WATCH
All games Friday, 7 p.m. unless indicated
Alemany (6-0, 0-0) at Crespi (5-2, 0-1) - Both teams can score like crazy with play-making QBs Vernon Adams of Alemany and Kenny Stenhouse of Crespi and their fleet of top receivers, but who is going to step up on defense?
Crespi might have the better defensive line with top college prospects Reggie Coates and Ronald Ussery, but Alemany has a more complete defense, led by DL Akeem Gonzales (seven sacks), LBs Bryce Henderson and Jesse Sampson and DBs Devon Smith and Jerico Richardson.
Both have defeated Taft, while Alemany owns a win over Oaks Christian and Crespi owns a win over Vista Murrieta.
If you like blazing speed, this should be a fun game. Crespi's Devin Lucien and Michael Davison and Alemany's Saladin McCullough and Stephen Mitchell are among the San Fernando Valley's fastest players.
El Camino Real (2-4, 0-1) at Taft (3-3, 0-1) - This is a big rivalry game, but it could be a long night for the Conquistadores if they don't shore up their defense after last week's 28-point loss to Granada Hills.
Taft QB Michael Bercovici (1,903 yards, 17 TDs) has a top WR Michael Thomas (54 receptions), a powerful RB in Kenny Thompson, plus an offensive line that averages 285.
El Camino Real RB Kawan Rally (ankle) is questionable.
Valencia (5-1, 1-0) at Canyon (6-0, 1-0) - It's nice to be undefeated, but Canyon has a lot to worry about if Valencia RB Steven Manfro keeps it up. The senior is coming off a 420-yard, five-TD rushing performance in a win over West Ranch, and overall he has rushed for 1,101 yards on just 84 carries while scoring 26 TDs, most on long breakaways including two kick returns.
Canyon, coming off a 2-9 season, has not made the playoffs since winning the 2006 Northern Division title and CIF State Div. I Bowl. The top players include QB Jonathan Jerozal, RB Darious Rudolph, WRs Drew Wolitarsky and T.J. Yonkers, PK Mohammad Roknipour and LBs Mark Hooper and Chris Ortiz, DL Adam Evans and DB Kenny Stone.
Sierra Canyon (6-0, 3-0) vs. Campbell Hall (4-2, 1-2) at Granada Hills HS - Some luster has been removed now that Campbell Hall has lost two in a row, but it's still a good QB matchup between Sierra Canyon's Tyler Stewart and Campbell Hall's R.J. Gordon.
Stewart has passed for 1,377 yards and 21 TDs. He directs that an offense that averages 46.8 points and 418 yards.
Hollywood (7-0) at Reseda (6-0) - Reseda prides itself on defense, and tonight the Regents look to slow down a Hollywood team that's off to its best start in decades. Some of Reseda's top defensive players are DL Jonathan Washington, LB Heber Silva and DB James Randolph.
