HS FOOT: Five games to watch
All games Friday, 7 p.m. unless indicated
St. Bonaventure (7-1, 6-1) at Westlake (8-0, 7-0) - Westlake, led by QB Nick Isham and WR Nelson Spruce, averages 41.8 points and 413 yards, but tonight the Warriors face a stifling defense in what figures to be a challenging Marmonte League showdown between highly competitive programs.
Some of Westlake's other top players are RB Tavior Mowry, DL Justin Solis, DB Dashon Hunt and LB Max Winsberg.
St. Bonaventure, led by LBs Jalen Jefferson and Cody Kurz, has a lots of strength and size, including 21 who weigh 215 pounds or more.
Serra (8-0, 3-0) at Chaminade (8-0, 3-0) - The top two teams in the Western Division go head to head in this heavily anticipated Mission League contest, and both love to score points so there should be lots of touchdowns.
Top-ranked Serra has won 23 in a row and 36 of its past 37, and there are lots of key returnees from last year's CIF State Div. III Bowl championship team, including QB Conner Preston and WR George Farmer, one of California's fastest players.
Chaminade, making a resurgence with second-year coach Ed Croson, is much younger with a large contingent of juniors and sophomores, but at least the Eagles have a special-teams advantage with top PK/punter Matt Goudis.
Loyola (3-6, 0-3) at Crespi (5-3, 0-2) - The pressure is on Crespi to hold onto its playoff chances, as the Celts probably need to win their final two games -- though eventually there could be a scenario in which Crespi, Notre Dame and Loyola finish in a three-way tie for third and use a coin flip to decide which one goes to the playoffs.
With a limited rushing attack that has yet to see anyone rush for more than 100 yards in a game, Crespi has been succeeding with an all-out passing attack led by QB Kenny Stenhouse and elite WRs Devin Lucien, Mike Davison and Chris Harper. But the Celts have struggled against the run, and that means Loyola's ultra fast RB Jared Baker could present problems; if Baker runs for 200 yards - a distinct possibility - Crespi might be in trouble.
Sierra Canyon (8-0, 5-0) vs. Paraclete (7-1, 5-0) at Antelope Valley College - These well-fortified small-school powers have been waiting for two months to face off, and the big night is finally here.
Sierra Canyon scores lots of points, as top QB Tyler Stewart loves to pass to Shane Harrison in key situations. There are a lot of other athletic skill players such as WR Julian Brooks and RBs Xavier Menifield and Danny Jordan.
Paraclete, led by coveted DL Lavonte Barnett and DB Darian Thompson, prides itself on defense.
The Spirits have won seven section titles through the years, while Sierra Canyon is in its second year of 11-man football.
Hart (5-3, 1-2) vs. Canyon (7-1, 2-1) at College of the Canyons, 7:30 p.m. - These Foothill League rivals have faced off in some epic classics through the years, and tonight's game is important because Hart is in danger of not making the playoffs for the first time in coach Mike Herrington's 22-year career.
Canyon has a top passing combo with junior QB Jonathan Jerozal and sophomore WR Drew Wolitarsky.
