HS FOOT: Canyon coach: 'It was the toughest thing I've ever had to do'

| | Comments (0) |

Just touched base with Canyon coach Chris Varner, who announced to his team that he is resigning for family reasons.

"It was really tough. It was the toughest thing I'ver had to do," said Varner, 33.

Canyon made a great turnaround this season, going 10-2 and advancing to the Northern quarterfinals after winning just two games in 2009.

The head job is attractive because Canyon is among the Southland's most high-profile programs, especially after winning the 2006 CIF State Div. I Bowl with a win over Concord De La Salle in former coach Harry Welch's final game.

Canyon returns star quarterback Jonathan Jerozal and elite receiver Drew Wolitarsky.
