HS HOOPS: Simi Valley holds on for 65-63 OT win over Calabasas
It was only his second game back after missing the beginning of the season for personal reasons, but Austin Hawk is quickly making up for lost time.
Down by one point, the 6-foot junior hit a turnaround jump shot with 22 seconds left in overtime Wednesday to lift Simi Valley to a 65-63 win over visiting Calabasas in a Marmonte League thriller that had the crowd on its feet.
"I was just feeling it. I like the last shot when the game is on the line," Hawk said. "I like the pressure. I'm not fazed by it."
Calabasas' Nick Justman missed on a driving layup at the buzzer.
Simi Valley's Jonathan Davis scored 21 points but fouled out in overtime. D.J. Saul added 12, Brandon Guillory scored 10 and Hawk had eight.
Calabasas' Callum Dewar scored 23 points, 15 in the third quarter.
Davis hit two free throws with five seconds left in regulation to forge a 59-59.
Calabasas (4-2, 1-1) did a good job denying Davis the ball in the first half, but when he did get his touches, he usually did something good.
His driving dunk with midway through the second quarter gave Simi Valley (7-3, 2-0) a 20-16 lead, and after Calabasas' Spencer Levy answered with a driving layup to cut the lead advantage back to two, Davis hit a turnaround jumper to help Simi Valley to a 27-23 halftime lead.
Guillory didn't enter the second quarter, but he scored six points in the period, including two driving baskets.
For the rest of the first half, Simi Valley mostly shot from the perimeter, connecting on four 3-pointers, two by Saul.
