Baseball: Montclair Prep beats Campbell Hall, 4-3

| | Comments (0) |

Max Fried, a UCLA-bound junior pitcher, has done more than his share to help the Montclair Prep baseball team this season.

So, it was only fitting Saturday that his teammates stepped up and helped him out with a three run rally in the bottom of the seventh as the Mounties edged Campbell Hall, 4-3, in a key Alpha League game at Simpson/Hartunian Field in Encino.

Blake Steele, the son of former coach and current principal Walt Steele, lined an Eli Munoz pitch up the middle to score Josh Brodsky for the winning run.

"The real pressure was on their pitcher with the bases loaded," Steele said. "He threw it out over the plate. I was on it."

The victory moved Montclair Prep (16-6, 8-2) one game behind league leader Paraclete with a huge two game series scheduled for next week on Tuesday and Friday.

"This was huge for us," Steele said. "We can carry this to next week. It could be a game we look back on that defines our season."

As much as it was meant to be for the Mounties, it was not meant to be in the top of the seventh.

Campbell Hall scored three runs without the aid of a hit as Fried thre a wild pitch for a run, a Luis Montiel passed ball allowed another run and Cory Bloom squeezed home the final run.

Fried would have been a hard luck loser after pitching a complete game one hitter with 10 strikeouts, five walks and two hit batters.

"When they got those runs I knew we would come back and go out with a fight. I love my guys. This is the best team I have been on," Fried said.

The Vikings (13-6, 6-2) received a huge effort from Long Island-bound right-hander Jack Bensinger, who allowed only one run on five hits through five innings but had to leave the game because he reached the 10-inning limit for the week.

Bensiger went five innings Tuesday in a close victory against Crossroads.

"That was big," Campbell Hall coach Juan Velasquez said. "It wasn't a big deal for us but I think they felt more comfortable not having to face Jack."

Despite only mustering an Adam Ehrlich single, the Vikings had baserunners on in every inning except the fifth.

However, Campbell Hall wasted opportunities with a runner picked off second base in the second and another runner cut down at third in the sixth.

Steele went 3 for 4 and Paul Aldape had two hits for Montclair Prep.

Aldape singled home Steele in the fourth for the games only run until the combined six run seventh.

Nick Suniga is scheduled to start Tuesday at home and Fried will get the call with the league championship possibly on the line Friday at Paraclete.

HS FOOT: Ex-Oaks QB performs well in Washington spring game, but is it enough to win job?

| | Comments (0) |

Nick Montana passed for 146 yards and two touchdowns in Washington's annual spring game, and he's still in the running to be the starting quarterback. Keith Price, also bidding for the job, completed 20 of 28 for 212 yards.

HS BASE: Dingilian pitches Chaminade to win over H.W.

| | Comments (0) |

Three walks in the first inning can sometimes make the pitcher's mound feel like the loneliest place on earth. But Chaminade High right-hander Michael Dingilian, who has never lost a high school game, barely flinched.

"The first inning is always the hardest," he said. "If I can get through it, I usually cruise."

Sure enough, Dingilian buckled down, pitching a complete-game three-hitter while striking out five Friday in a 5-2 win over visiting Harvard-Westlake in a key Mission League game.

With an array of breaking pitches that zoomed in at various unhittable angles, Dingilian (7-0) retired 11 of 12 at one point to improve to 14-0 in his career.

"I had no doubt. I knew Michael would settle down," Chaminade catcher Mathew Troupe said. "It was no biggie. I had all the faith in the world in him."

Chaminade (16-6, 8-2), top-ranked in the Southern Section Div. II poll, was in danger of falling two games out of first place with two league games remaining. Instead, the Eagles are tied for first in loss column and very much in the thick of things.

So happy was Chaminade coach Frank Mutz that he gave the team two days off.

"We still have to play Notre Dame twice, and that's no walk in the park, but if we had lost today, it would have put us in a big hole," Mutz said. "It's nice to have a guy like Michael Dingilian on the team. You just give the ball to him, and you know you're going to be in the game."

Dingilian added two hits, including a two-run single that highlighted a five-run rally in the second inning, as Chaminade erased a two-run deficit. An inning later, the Eagles chased right-hander Sam Horn (0-3).

"It was an extremely important game, and we did not expect to lose," Dingilian said.

Harvard-Westlake (17-7, 6-2), seeking its first league title in baseball in at least 22 years, was coming off a win over Chaminade three days earlier.

"After Chaminade scored those five runs, it kind of took us out of our game," Harvard-Westlake coach Matt Lacour said. "We like to hit and run, we like to bunt, and when you're chasing three, it's a little different."

Troupe had an RBI single, Jason D'Andrea added a double and a run, and Dylan Delaney had a run and a run-scoring walk.

HS BASE: Chatsworth, ECR ready to renew rivalry

| | Comments (0) |

It's a huge week in City Section baseball, as longtime rivals Chatsworth and El Camino Real play a two-game series beginning at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Chatsworth.

They're tied for first in the West Valley League with five games remaining, and both are strong contenders for the City final at Dodger Stadium.

"Our league is wide open. Hopefully, it will be a good series," El Camino Real coach Josh Lienhard said.

Hard-throwing Jose Cardona (5-2, 1.95 ERA), the reigning City Player of the Year, is El Camino Real's scheduled starter Wednesday.

"I'm excited. I'm always excited to play Chatsworth," Cardona said. "It's the biggest game of the year."

HS BASE: Valencia's Williams turns it on

| | Comments (0) |

After a slow start, Valencia's Trey Williams is turning it on. He has six home runs, four over the past seven games heading into a key Foothill League matchup at 3:15 p.m. today at West Ranch.

The junior is batting .274, and 10 of his 17 hits have been for extra bases, including a home run Wednesday in a 2-1 win over West Ranch in the first of a two-game series.

"Trey is definitely hitting, and it couldn't come at a better time," said coach Jared Snyder, whose Vikings have a one-game lead over Hart with five to play.

Williams' resurgence has coincided with a return to third base after spending most of the season as a designated hitter because of arm problems.

"Sometimes being a DH is tough because if you're not hitting well, you have the whole game to dwell on it because there's nothing else to do," Synder said. "Not everyone is cut out for it."

HS BASE: Youth movement at San Fernando

San Fernando (18-5) has having a strong season, and the Tigers are a team on the rise because some of the top players are underclassmen.

Willie Vasquez, a junior, is batting .545 with 17 RBIs. Freddie Flores, also a junior, is hitting .391 with 25 RBIs, and he might be the Valley's most productive No. 9 hitter.

"Freddie probably would like to be higher, but that's where he bats," coach Armando Gomez said.

The Tigers also have senior leadership in pitchers David Lira (4-4, 1.90 ERA) and Jose Reyes (4-1, 3.30 ERA, 42 strikeouts).

"David Lira has four losses, but every loss has been one of our biggest games," Gomez said.

HS BASE: Cleveland looks to improve

| | Comments (0) |

Cleveland is in a funk. After a strong start, the Cavaliers have lost 10 of 11 - including three one-run losses over the past four -- to fall to 10-15 heading into a West Valley game at 6 p.m. today at Birmingham.

"We just can't win any of these one-run games," coach Greg Venger said. "We make a couple of mistakes here and there, and every mistake we make, the other team capitalizes on it. Earlier in the season, it seemed like if we'd make a mistake, we could get away with it. We're not as confident, but you know how this game goes - winning cures everything."

HS BASE: Burbank has a hard-luck pitcher

"We're young, so we have that going for us," Hart said.

Fried (4-2, 1.32 ERA) shut out Campbell Hall last time, as the teams have split two games.

HS BASE: Arleta's Lopez sparks win over Verdugo

| | Comments (0) |

TUJUNGA - With the left-field fence just 267 feet away, Verdugo Hills High can be an adventurous place to pitch.

"You have to be a little more careful," Arleta right-hander Javy Lopez said. "You can see how short it is."

As a hitter, Lopez loves the place, pulling a grand-slam home run today, and as a pitcher, he was not bad either in a 9-5 win over the host Dons that pulled Arleta to within a game of the East Valley League baseball championship.

The senior pitched the 18th consecutive complete-game of his career, scattering nine hits and striking out five, as Arleta won its ninth in a row despite being a bit rusty after a 13-day break.

Ivan Ceja added a two-run home run, and Manny Guzman was 3 for 4 with a home run, double and two RBIs - not bad considering Arleta had a total of four home runs coming in.

"It's the same for both teams," Arleta coach Edgar Maldonado said. "We don't even have our own field, so to us this place feels like Dodger Stadium."

Lopez, who extended his hitting streak to nine games, is having an MVP-type season with a .380 average, two home runs and 19 runs, plus a 4-2 record with two saves, a 1.85 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 41 innings. His complete-game streak extends back to his sophomore season.

"Once he gets to the sixth or seventh inning, it's hard to take him out," Maldonado said. "He gets better as the game goes on."

Arleta's Andres Coll scored twice and turned two double plays at second base, and Johnny Munoz chipped in a pinch-hit RBI single.

Verdugo Hills' Josh Giannini (4-5) allowed nine runs in five innings. Teammate John Guerra went 3 for 4 with three doubles, two runs and two RBIs, Mike McCallister had two hits, a run and an RBI, and Joe Silva scored twice.

Verdugo Hills (14-11, 6-1) had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, but Lopez induced Giannini to ground to first for the final out.

"Lopez is one of the better pitchers in the City Section, but we battled back at the end," Verdugo Hills coach Angel Espindola said.

The loss was Verdugo Hills' second in a row, and the Dons play host to Arleta again on Friday, but this time Arleta is slated to be the home team.

"We should be able to come back from this," Guerra said.

HS HOOPS: Jackson, Dinwiddie shine in all-star game

| | Comments (0) |

Lonnie Jackson and Spencer Dinwiddie were the two marquee names Saturday in 15th annual Battle of the Valley boys' all-star game, and sure enough they saved their best for last.

Jackson, a Valencia High standout, scored 27 points, including 10 of 10 free throws, with four assists, three 3-pointers and two blocks to lead the East to a 113-102 victory, while Taft's Dinwiddie chipped in 31 points, including 26 in the second half, with 11 rebounds and two assists for the East at Cal State Northridge.

They were named co-MVPs.

"It was a good time and a well-played game," Jackson said. "Spencer and I, we just competed against each other. I love to compete, and I love to win."

They play together on the same summer team, and both are headed to major colleges, as Jackson is going to Boston College and Dinwiddie has signed with Colorado.

"I thought it was a lot of fun," Dinwiddie said. "It was fun to run with Lonnie all summer. He's a prolific shooter."

Dinwiddie had just five points in the first half, and with his team down by 10 at the break, he decided to turn it on.

"My initial thought was I better start scoring because I wanted to win," Dinwiddie said. "Once it kind of got out of reach, I cooled off a bit."

East coach Steve Wachs of Campbell Hall was totally impressed with both.

"Lonnie is just a great offensive player because any way that's possible to score, he did it - off the break, off the dribble, rebound baskets," Wachs said. "Dinwiddie, by scoring 31 points, I think it's a testament to how unselfish he was as a high school player. He can definitely score, and he's a special player and a special kid."

Jordan Fuller of Alemany added 19 points for the East, while Campbell Hall's Austin McBroom chipped in 18 points, six rebounds and three assists, and Crespi's Matt Mounier scored 17 (all in the second half).

"I think it was fun. It was a big win," Mounier said. "There wasn't a lot of defense, but Jackson and Dinwiddie both have some great moves, so it probably didn't matter."

Cleveland's Jaylen Bland had 14 points, nine rebounds and three assists for the West. Taft's Khiry Williams added 16 points with three assists, and Chatsworth's Derrick Hector chipped in 13 points, four rebounds and three assists.

"What made it so fun is I've been playing with a lot of these guys for a long time," Hector said. "Khiry Williams, Austin McBroom, Lonnie Jackson, I've known these guys for years. It was a fun game, and I had fun playing in it. I'm going to miss high school."

Proceeds benefited the Valley Sports Foundation.

Buckley's Nick de Bonfilhs won the halftime dunk contest, clinching the championship over runner-up Khiry Williams of Taft with a reverse dunk from the right baseline, as de Bonfilhs turned nearly 360 degrees in the air.

The game is scheduled to be on TV today at noon on Time Warner channel 101.

HS TRACK: Harvard-Westlake's Chapus sets school record, runs No. 3 time in U.S.

| | Comments (0) |

In her final tuneup before the Mission League prelims and finals, Harvard-Westlake junior distance runner Cami Chapus delivered another exceptional performance in the Wolverines' dual meet Thursday against Marymount.

Chapus clocked a school-record 10 minutes, 19.47 seconds in the 3,200 meters to improve upon Lindsay Flacks' mark of 10:24.14 set at the 2004 Golden West Invitational.

Chapus, who already set the school record March 26 in the 1,600 by running 4:51.66 at the Mount Carmel Invitational in San Diego, moved up to No. 2 in the state -- behind national-leader Sarah Baxter of Simi Valley (10:14.11) -- and third on the country's outdoor 3,200 performance list this season.

It is the fifth school-record performance this year for Chapus, who has also run on national-leading 1,600-meter sprint medley, distance medley and 4 x 800 relays. Chapus also ran on Harvard-Westlake's school-record 800-meter sprint medley relay in a March 16 dual meet at Oaks Christian.

Hilary King also regained her school record from Lauren Hansson in the 100-meter dash, running 12.40. The Duke-bound Hansson has set or been a part of 10 school records in her career.

HS BASE: Alemany hangs on for win over Chatsworth

| | Comments (0) |

FULLERTON - Four games in four days can wear down a pitching staff, especially at the high school level, but Alemany had just enough arms today to win the consolation championship of the prestigious Hard 9 National Classic, defeating Chatsworth 11-8 at Cal State Fullerton.

Anthony Guglielmi earned the relief win, and Peter Van Gansen registered his eighth save of the season - including his second of the tournament - by entering in the bottom of the seventh and inducing hot-hitting Steven Karkenny to fly to center with two on base for the final out.

"I just try to come in there and zone everything out except for me and the catcher," Van Gansen said. "I just try to get outs. I guess the coaches believe in me, and I trust my defense."

Ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section Div. II preseason poll, Alemany (16-8) has had its ups and downs, losing four of six at one point, but the Warriors won three of four in the tournament, and they're 7-1 over the past eight games heading into 12-day spring break beginning today.

Defeating a powerful opponent like Chatsworth (14-4) -- which has won nine City titles including seven over the past 11 years - could be just the motivation Alemany needs heading into the stretch run.

"Going 3-1 and beating Chatsworth, that's not bad at all," Alemany coach Randy Thompson said. "They're one of the better-coached teams you can find, and to beat them you've got to play some good baseball."

Alemany's Corey Sims went 4 for 4 with two triples, three RBIs and two runs, and overall he totaled 11 hits in four tournament games.

"This tournament was a good experience," said Sims, also a top football player. "There are a lot of good teams from all over the USA, and it's a great experience to play the best of the best. I've been swinging the bat with confidence."

An understatement, Thompson said.

"He's the hottest hitter in California," Thompson said.

Cody Sulflow added two doubles and four RBIs, Anthony Esparza had two hits, including a triple, and an RBI, Alex Adajar had two hits and two runs, and Edgar Montes chipped in a single, two runs and an RBI.

Karkenny had two doubles - including a fourth-inning shot that hit the top of the outfield fence - and two runs, while Aaron Brown chipped in a triple, single, two RBIs and three runs, and Raul Camas added three hits, including a double, and two RBIs.

HS BASE: Valencia's Rivas nearly pulls off no-hitter in 15-1 win

| | Comments (0) |

Nick Rivas lost a no-hit bid with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning today, but just about everything else went perfectly for Valencia High in a 15-1 Foothill League win at Golden Valley.

Rivas was one strike away from a no-hitter when Tanner Swire hit a grounder up the middle that was nearly caught by Rivas before rolling into center field for a single.
"I was trying not to think about the no-hitter, but I almost got that grounder. It just got by me," Rivas said.

Rivas (5-1) settled for a one-hitter with one unearned run and six strikeouts while lowering his ERA to 1.41. At one point, he retired 15 in a row

"He was dominant from the beginning, and we really needed it today," Valencia coach Jared Snyder said.

Valencia (14-3, 6-2) pounded five pitchers for 15 runs, all earned, on 19 hits -- including five home runs and seven doubles.

Brian Mundell was 3 for 3 with two home runs and three RBIs, Trey Williams was 3 for 5 with a home run, double and three runs, Shane Zeile was 3 for 4 with three doubles and three runs, Alex Bishop was 2 for 4 with a home run, double and two RBIs, and A.J. Balta was 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs.

"It was just nice to get everybody in and give everyone a chance to play," Mundell said.
The win was good for team morale after losing two of the past three, including a 2-0 loss to West Ranch one day earlier.

"It's great because a win like this kind of brings everyone together," Zeile said. "We were kind of cheering each other on."

Golden Valley (11-7, 2-6) scored a first-inning run when Ryan Alvarez got aboard on a leadoff error, stole second, advanced on a grounder, then scored on Anthony San Miguel's sacrifice fly.

Softball: Simi Valley improves to 10-0 in Marmonte League

| | Comments (0) |

It was business as usual for the Simi Valley softball team Tuesday in a Marmonte League game against surprising Moorpark.

The Pioneers scored early, held off a rally from the Musketeers and remained undefeated in league play after a 6-3 victory.

It wasn't the best effort of the season by Simi Valley but Sophia Perez battled through a cut finger on her pitching hand and Jenn Soria provided the offensive punch as the Pioneers improved to 18-2 and 10-0.

Simi Valley has a comfortable three game lead with four games left on its schedule before starting the Divisiin I playoffs.

Perez threw a complete game seven hitter, allowing three runs with a walk and eight strikeouts.

Her eight punchouts came in the first four innings.

Perez gave up solo home runs to Madison Fleming in the third and Cheyenne Sandoval in the sixth to make things interesting but closed the game by inducing Fleming into a high pop out to third after a two out double by Dani Brown.

"It wasn't really bothering me, my finger, except the ball was spinning off a little differently and I had to throw a lot of pitches," Perez said.

Perez got big help from Soria in the seventh when she blasted a two-run homer to deep center off Rachael Farrington.

The big hit gave Simi Valley its final three run cushion.

"I hit it off my hands, I thought it would be caught," Soria said.

The victory for Simi Valley was its second against the Musketeers after a 2-1 win March 22 and came after a tight 2-1 victory against rival Royal last Friday.

Fleming went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI's to lead the Musketeers (13-7, 7-3). Allie Mouwen had two doubles.

Sandoval pitched the first three innings for Moorpark while Farrington went the final four giving up two runs on five hits with three strikeouts.

Taylor Cartwright had a two run double in the first, Hannah Brown singled in a run in the first and Callie Grant reached base on three infield hits for Simi Valley.

The Pioneers have battled through injuries, stayed consistent and have not let complacency set in as the season enters the final weeks.

"We have good chemistry," Perez said.

Perez didn't have her best stuff but got enough run support from her teammates.

"We have each others back," Soria said.

Simi Valley coach Russ Micahel weighed in.

"It has been the continued maturity of the kids," Michael said. "They know what it takes. It is about team and not individuals. The pick each other up. They think anyone can do it and come through. Most of all they believe."

Football: Paraclete's Davis will be on roster at UCLA

| | Comments (0) |

Paraclete football coach Norm Dahlia announced today that senior student athlete Roosevelt Davis has earned a spot on UCLA's roster for the upcoming 2011 season as a preferred walk-on.

"What an awesome way to cap-off an all-star academic and athletic career here at Paraclete," Dahlia said. "You can chalk this one up to Roosevelt's persistence. After many schools initially passed on him, he still went out there and kept working hard to show off his skill and ability at regional combines. Now a month or so later, we know he caught someone's eye."

Davis applied for and was officially granted admission to UCLA last month. Although he was not offered a football scholarship, Davis will report to school with the rest of the team and will join the Bruins starting this fall when practices start.

"Even though he doesn't have an official scholarship, Roosevelt is going to be a member of the Bruins program when he starts his next chapter down in Westwood," Dahlia added. "He opened up door number one and now he's going to get the same access the players with scholarships have. Looking down the road, there's no doubt in my mind he's going to keep pushing coach Neuheisel's staff until they either offer him a scholarship or drag him off the field."

With the latest news, Davis is now the third standout player from Paraclete's senior championship class set to join an NCAA Division I football program next fall.

HS BASE: Burroughs fires coaching staff, cancels season (updated)

| | Comments (0) |

Amid allegations an assistant coach supplied beer to the majority of the baseball team during a spring break tournament, Burroughs High announced Monday the cancellation of the rest of the season and firing of head coach J.R. Schwer and all three of his assistants.

Burroughs will forfeit the rest of its games, principal Emilio Urioste said.

Urioste said he learned of the allegation Friday, and by Monday he had interviewed three coaches and 18 players, 11 of whom admitted to drinking the beer, plus the remaining seven who all said they knew about it, Urioste said.

"It's very disappointing because I'm in love with this school, and I've put almost 20 years of my life into this place," Urioste said. "I'm disappointed in the decisions made, primarily at the adult level, and that's what's most disappointing. I feel badly for them, the coaches and the kids."

An official school statement said the coaches have been fired, the 11 students who admitted to drinking were suspended for five days while the other seven were suspended for two days, and that a report has filed with the Burbank Police Department in cooperation with the Arizona police for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Burroughs (6-8, 3-2 in the Pacific League) was scheduled to play Glendale on Monday. None of the players were available for comment.

Bob Hart, head coach at neighborhood rival Burbank, said it was "a sad situation."

"Personally, I'm not very happy about it," Hart said. "I hate to see something like this happen to any team. The Burroughs game is a game we look forward to and the kids look forward to, so this is not something we wanted to see happen. It's a bad situation all the way around."

The JV and freshmen teams will continue, Urioste said. When the varsity players return from their suspensions, they will continue sixth-period baseball practice, with athletic director and former head coach Jose Valle taking over as interim coach, Urioste said.

"We're in the process of moving forward and doing the right thing for the future of the program," Urioste said.

The incident allegedly happened in mid-March when the team stayed in hotel rooms for a tournament in Tucson.

Schwer was in his second season as head coach after serving eight years as an assistant. The team went 12-15 last year and made the playoffs.

Softball: Simi valley beats Royal, 2-1

| | Comments (0) |

It doesn't matter who plays and who doesn't when the Simi Valley and Royal softball teams play each other.

The rivalry between the schools only located miles apart off the 118 freeway is always one of the most anticipated and fiercest in the region.

Royal didn't have the services of Arizona-bound pitcher Nancy Bowling because of a slight tendon tear in her left knee but Simi Valley had to fight till the end in a 2-1 Marmonte League victory.

Sophia Perez outduled Kelyn Fillmore, throwing a complete game four hitter with 10 strikeouts and three walks.

Perez was at her best in the sixth when she struck out Montana Harrington looking on the 11th pitch of the at-bat. Ali Mosier was stranded at third.

In the seventh, Perez gave up a leadoff single to Samantha Ohmie but struck out Rachel Duncan and retired Katelyn Tollefson on a ground ball to third.

Ohmie was stranded at second after advancing on a passed ball.

"I just stay focused and try not to get wrapped up in all that is going on," Perez said. That was a great at-bat in the sixth. I had to do anything not to walk her or let her get on."

The Pioneers (17-2, 9-0) quickly got on the board in the first when Nicole Cheek singled home Callie Grant, who led off with a single and stole second.

Hannah Brown singled home Jenn Soria in the third for what would be the winning run.

Royal has now lost five of its past six games as it tries to cope without its star pitcher.

The Highlanders (11-6, 6-4) lost to Moorpark and Westlake earlier this week and have two more games today in the Loara tournament.

"It has really been a tough week," Royal coach Bill Dishon said. "We know what kind of a team we are at this point. We have to go out there with the right attitude."

Fillmore really stepped up and kept the Highlanders in the game throwing a seven hitter with five strikeouts and a walk.

"She did a wonderful job," Dishon said. "She kept us right there the whole game."

Royal had several opportunities but could not get the big hit.

The Highlanders left runners in scoring position in the first, third, sixth and seventh.

"We needed to prove to ourselves and everyone we are still good," Fillmore said.

Grant and Cook each had two hits for the Pioneers and Taylor Cartwright reached base three times.

Mosier and Ohmie each reached base twice for Royal.

Ohmie had two singles, including one that brought home Fillmore in the fourth after she walked with one out.

Softball: Oaks Christian keeps rolling, advances to semifinals at Michelle Carew Classic in Anaheim

The Oaks Christian softball team just keeps on winning and winning.

The Lions received a huge two run single from Hannah Roberg in the third inning and held on for a 2-0 victory against Marina of Huntington Beach in a quarterfinal game at the Michelle Carew Classic tournament hosted by Canyon High of Anaheim.

Freshman Kristen Cullen pitched 5.1 innings and had five strikeouts.

Kiana Quolas, a Coastal Carolina-bound pitcher, went the final 1.2 and picked up the save. Quolas struck out two batters to end the game.

The Lions now move into Saturdays semifinals at 1:30 p.m. at Peralta Park against either Norco or Esperanza.

Oaks Christian's only loss this season came in the first game of a doubleheader against El Camino Real on March 16.

Baseball: Campbell Hall returns the favor to Montclair Prep

| | Comments (0) |

Just as fast as the Montclair Prep baseball team moved into a share of first place in the Alpha League with a victory against Campbell Hall Tuesday, the Mounties are back out and in second place again.

The Vikings returned the favor after a 10-run loss with an almost flawless 7-0 victory Thursday at Simpson/Hartunian Field in Encino.

Jack Bensinger pitched a complete game two hitter with four strikeouts and a walk to lead the way for Campbell Hall (11-6, 4-1).

Bensinger was victimized by an error and his only walk in the first but regrouped to retire 14 consecutive batters until another error in the sixth.

The no-hit bid was broken up by sophomore Ben McKendall in the seventh with one out but Bensinger retired Myles Hagar and C.J. Percini to end the game.

"The wind was blowing in so I knew all I had to do was throw strikes," Bensinger said. "Throw strikes and let my guys do the work for me. I just wanted to let the their bats hit the ball and get ground balls."

Campbell Hall scored all the runs it would need in the second when Jesse Ehrlich led off with a walk and scored and Cory Bloom had an RBI single.

The Vikings added three runs in the sixth and two insurance runs in the seventh.

Ehrlich singled home Bensinger in the sixth and walked with the bases loaded in the seventh to knock in Brett Lake.

"Thats wasn't our team Tuesday when we lost," Bensinger said. "We were overexcited but we showed we can compete now. It was important to keep pace."

McKendall and Paul Adalpe finally solved Bensinger in the seventh with singles through the hole between shortstop and third base but it was too late against the Vikings No. 1 starter, who should go head to head with Mounties ace Max Fried on April 30 in the third and final meeting between the teams.

"That gane could be over in an hour and 10 minutes," Campbell Hall coach Juan Velasquez said. "Jack throws strikes and mixes his pitches so well it is hard to sit on anythung and Max is a great pitcher."

Campbell Hall moved back into a tie with Paraclete atop the league standings while Montclair Prep trails by one game.

"Our league is the best in Division 5 so whatever team finishes third will give somebody a hard time in the playoffs," Velasquez said.

HS FOOT: Montclair Prep names new coach

| | Comments (0) |

It's official: Tim Stallworth is the new head coach at Montclair Prep, the Mounties' third coach in three seasons but someone school director Mark Simpson vows can turn things around for a program once considered among the best in the San Fernando Valley.

"I feel like a million bucks," Simpson said. "Tim is just so positive, and I love his whole approach. I think you're going to see a whole new life for Montclair football."

HS BASE: Arleta is on a hot streak

| | Comments (0) |

Arleta High's baseball team has found a great way to stretch its pitching: Everyone throws a complete game.

Six times in a row, an Arleta pitcher has gone the distance, and Ivan Ceja has done it twice, including a four-hitter Friday in a 12-3 East Valley League baseball win at Monroe.

"I love pitching. Pitching wins championships," Arleta coach Edgar Maldonado said. "Early in the season, we kind of struggled, but I always knew we had pitching. Ivan was on the strike zone today, and he has three good pitches."

Ceja (3-3) retired 13 of the last 14, finishing with five strikeouts and no walks while allowing one earned run.

The victory was Arleta's sixth in a row, and the Mustangs (11-7, 6-0) have outscored opponents 46-5 during the streak while recording three shutouts.

Right-handers Ceja, Javy Lopez and Miguel Perez are the key pitchers, and all have an ERA of 2.47 or better.

HS FOOT: Crespi's Simmons, Oaks' Adams named top performers at Nike camp

| | Comments (0) |

Crespi lineman Jordan Simmons and Oaks Christian defensive back Ishmael Adams stood out at a large-scale Nike scouting combine at USC this past weekend.

Here's an ESPN rundown:

More than 300 athletes from all over the West gathered at USC for the second stop on the Nike Football Training Camp tour. It might have been the most talent-laden SoCal event in recent memory. More than 70 players in attendance had at least one scholarship offer under their belt.

Here are the top 24 performers from the camp, based on both NFTC staff feedback and college potential.

OFFENSE

QB: Matt Morin, 6-2.5, 217, Chaparral (Temecula, Calif.)
Morin surprised many onlookers with his performance on Sunday. The strong armed lefty had the tightest release, was extremely accurate and showed off an absolute cannon for an arm. The signal caller is still waiting for his first offer but he showed he can definitely play at the high FBS level.

RB: Kendyl Taylor, (NO HT/WT), Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.)
Taylor showed high level athleticism and a great burst off the line. He has loose hips and is very tough to handle in the open field. He also showed good toughness in the blocking drills and could be the top back in the Grand Canyon State.

WR: Darius Powe, 6-2, 199, Lakewood (Lakewood, Calif.)
Powe fits the mold of the big, physical and fast receivers you see dominating the college game. He has a great frame but can really run and no one could cover him on Sunday. As a junior, Powe caught 43 balls for 822 yards and six touchdowns to earn1st team all-state underclass honors.

WR: Bryce Treggs, 5-11, 167, St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.)
Treggs is lightning quick and has great hands as well. He's a polished route runner and has a great understanding of how to get open and how to play his position. Treggs was a 1st team all-state underclass selection last season catching 56 balls for 1,010 yards and 12 touchdowns.

WR: Gabriel Marks, 5-11.5, 168, Venice (Los Angeles, Calif.)
Marks is as polished a high school receiver as you're going to see. Some have questioned his top-end speed but he has no problem getting open and could have the best hands in the state. He's an equally talented corner and is yet another player who was named all-state underclass a year ago after catching 34 balls for 1,344 yards and 13 touchdowns.

WR: Malik Gilmore, 6-3, 200, Lakewood (Lakewood, Calif.)
Gilmore often gets lost in Powe's shadow but he's an elite receiver prospect as well. He looks much bigger than his listed HT/WT and it wouldn't be surprising if he eventually grew into tight end. Gilmore is so strong that you can't press him and he has very strong hands as well.

TE: Taylor McNamara, 6-5, 224, Westview (San Diego, Calif.)
Good looking athlete who runs well, has very soft hands and a great frame. He's a precise route runner and is too big for safeties to cover and too quick for linebackers. The tight end has offers from schools all over the country including Ohio State, USC, UCLA, Florida State, Michigan, Cal and Stanford.

OL: Jordan Simmons, 6-4, 335, Crespi (Encino, Calif.)
Simmons took home OL MVP honors with a dominating performance for the second year in a row. The big lineman has surprising quickness and plays with a mean streak. He could benefit but leaning out a bit but is easily among the nation's top guard prospects.

OL: Ronnie Stanley, 6-5.5, 283, Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.)
Stanley was easily the most athletic lineman in the group and has great feet. He has the prototype frame you're looking for in a tackle with a long, lean frame that will hold a lot more weight, long arms and plus athleticism. He left no doubt why he's regarded the top player in the state.

OL: John Lopez ('13), 6-5, 326, Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.)
Lopez has a chance to be among the top lineman in the nation in two years and had a great camp. He's a big, physical player who dominated the one on ones with his combination of brute strength and technique. Lopez plays with a mean streak and already has a college body. UCLA offered following his freshman season.

OL: Cedrick Poutasi, 6-4.5, 333, Desert Pines (Las Vegas, Nev.)
Poutasi is a true road grader who just mauls opposing lineman. He has a big frame but is light on his feet and has a great punch. He has the size and athleticism to play guard or tackle at the next level but probably projects best as an interior lineman.

ATH: Derrick Woods, 5-11.5, 171, Inglewood (Inglewood, Calif.)
Woods showed his versatility working out with the wide receivers and having an incredible camp. Prior to the event, he was thought of more as a hard hitting safety but after Sunday, there's no doubt he could play on either side of the ball in college.

DEFENSE

DL: Ellis McCarthy, 6-5, 308, Monrovia (Monrovia, Calif.)
One of the most impressive looking tackles you'll see at the high school level. McCarthy has a huge frame but looks lean and moves like a player half his size. He's physically strong enough to just bull rush people but showed a variety of pass rush moves and should be considered among the nation's top defensive tackles.

DL: Aziz Shittu, 6-2.5, 275, Buhach Colony (Atwater, Calif.)
Shittu was one of the surprises of the camp and earned DL MVP honors. He took reps at both defensive end and tackle and didn't come close to losing a rep in the one on ones. He has a great first step off the snap, is very strong in the upper body and is among the most explosive lineman in the region.

DL: Chauntee Jackson ('13), 6-4, 230, Inglewood (Inglewood, Calif.)
Young rush end has a ton of upside. Jackson is a great athlete and showed tremendous speed coming off the edge. He's still raw and needs to learn how to use his athleticism but he has a great motor and can be as good as he wants to be.

DL: Kyle Kelley, 6-3, 230, Woodbridge (Woodbridge, Calif.)
Kelley is a natural pass rusher and a tremendous athlete. He plays both linebacker and defensive end and athletically, was just too much to handle for all opposing lineman. He's a high effort guy who really competes and showed why he has offers from schools like Florida, Arizona State, Colorado, and Washington.

LB: Jabari Ruffin, 6-3, 219, Downey (Downey, Calif.)
Has all the tools to be a star at the next level. Was one of the most physically impressive looking players at the event and dominated the drills before tweaking his ankle, causing him to miss one on ones. Has size, speed and just the right amount of nastiness and USC landed a good one here.

LB: Butch Pauu, 5-10, 209, Servite (Anaheim, Calif.)
Pauu does everything well and earned LB MVP honors. Plays with a non-stop motor and loves to be coached. Runs well, is very aggressive and has greatly improved his cover skills. BYU, Washington and Iowa State have offered but the Cougs could be tough to beat.

LB: Aaron Porter, 6-0.5, 229, La Habra (La Habra, Calif.)
Natural inside 'backer with great toughness. Had some great plays in the one on ones including the pick of the day covering a corner route in the end zone. Has incredibly strong hands and does everything fundamentally well.

LB: Jeremiah Allison, 6-0, 202, Dorsey (Los Angeles, Calif.)
Played primarily defensive end the past two seasons and had 40 quarterback sacks. Showed he can move like a linebacker and has very good athleticism and toughness. Another player who loves to be coached and will only get better as he leans the position.

DB: Ishmael Adams, 5-8, 183, Oaks Christian (Westlake Village, Calif.)
Strong and stocky and showed great quickness in coverage. Is a natural cover man who looked good in press coverage and can turn and run with anyone. Ran three events in track the day before the camp but still came out and earned DB MVP honors.

DB: Davonte Neal, 5-9.5, 172, Chaparral (Scottsdale, Ariz.)
Neal is known primarily as a game breaking receiver but showed he can easily play corner in college as well. He has great speed but showed he can be very physical at the line. Neal has offers from just about every top program in the country and could be the top skill athlete in the region.

DB: Raymond Ford, 5-9, 155, Serra (Gardena, Calif.)
No one performed better in the one on ones than Ford. He had more interceptions than any other corner and several acrobatic pass breakups. He'll need to get bigger but does play physical and has great closing speed.

HS BASE: Great ready for intriguing pitching duel with Giolito, Lathuras

| | Comments (0) |

Mission League competition heats up this week, as Notre Dame and Harvard-Westlake play a two-game series beginning today at 3:45 at Notre Dame in Sherman Oaks, then Friday at 3:30 at O'Malley Field in Encino.

Two of the area's top right-handers, junior Lucas Giolito of Harvard-Westlake and Matt Lathuras of Notre Dame, are expected to go head to head today, and that figures to be one of the best pitching matchups you can find in the Valley.

"It's two quality guys," Harvard-Westlake coach Matt Lacour said.

It's not the mecca of high school football, but Canoga Park has a legitimate national prospect in Randy Uzoma, a receiver/return specialist who scored off the charts at a Nike combine at Vets Stadium in Long Beach -- a 130.26 SPARQ score, the highest in the nation, according to Canoga Park coach Ivan Moreno.

"He's a great story," Moreno said. "Both his parents are immigrants from Nigeria. He has outstanding grades and is an even better human being. He is what being a Hunter is all about."
