GIRLS' TRACK: Chaotic day for Chapus ends on positive note

| | Comments (0) |

Harvard-Westlake's Cami Chapus began her day by finishing second in the 1,500-meter final at the World Youth Track and Field trials Wednesday at Shaw Stadium in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

But it wasn't until nearly 12 hours later that Chapus learned whether her season would continue another week.

Although Chapus ran 4:25.61 -- the eighth-fastest outdoor time in the country this year -- she was edged by Hannah Meier of Michigan's Grosse Pointe High, who produced the No. 6 mark to prevail in 4:24.92.

The USATF usually takes the top two finishers in each event to compete at the IAAF World Youth Championships, scheduled this year for July 6-10 in Lille, France.

But because Chapus didn't initially meet certain qualifying criteria or standards according to the IAAF, she was left off the U.S. 17-under roster that would travel to France, despite being the national high school outdoor leader in the mile (4:42.71) and ranking second this year in the 1,600 (4:40.88).

After Chapus' omission from the team was questioned by Harvard-Westlake's coaching staff, in addition to the support she received from members of the USATF coaching staff, she was then added late Wednesday to the American roster and will be traveling to France with Harvard-Westlake teammate Amy Weissenbach, who ran 2:09.52 in the 800 final to place second to Ajee Wilson of Neptune High (N.J.), who clocked 2:09.39.

"I have a huge headache, but I am going," Chapus said.

Weissenbach, who set National Federation High School record June 4 by running 2:02.04 to repeat as state 800 champion, still boasts the fastest 17-under time in the world this year.

"We're super excited," Weissenbach said. "To go with Cami will be especially fun."

Girls' basketball: Oaks Christian coach Trutanic, Jr. resigns

| | Comments (0) |

Oaks Christian girls' basketball coach Mario Trutanic, Jr. lasted one season with the Lions.

Trutanic resigned Wednesday afternoon and will be an asst. coach for the Cal St. Northridge women's team.

Trutanic led the Lions to an undefeated run through Tri-Valley League competition and a Div. IV-A championship game appearance but Oaks Christian lost to St. Anthony at the Anaheim Convention Center in March.

Many top applicants are expected to apply.

The team returns four key starters and should be bolstered by the additions of four possible transfers.

Applicants for the position are encouraged to contact athletic director Jan Hethcock.

Boys' basketball: Oaks Christian loses close to Santa Monica

| | Comments (0) |

It was a good thing Oaks Christian coach Andre Chevalier was not at the Lions first round game in the Fairfax tournament against Santa Monica, Tuesday.

Oaks Christian was playing well and took a 14-point second half lead but the wheels came off and the Lions dropped a 66-65 decision.

Chass Bryan scored 23 points and it looked like Oaks Christian would pull off the mild upset and advance to face Loyola but it will be Santa Monica after a great comeback effort.

Jordan Matthews scored 24 points to lead the Vikings.

Oaks Christian will play El Camino Real at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in a consolation quarterfinal.

BASEBALL: UCLA prospects Fried, Giolito and Virant all invited to U.S. 18-under trials

| | Comments (0) |

Montclair Prep's Max Fried, Harvard-Westlake's Lucas Giolito and Camarillo's Hunter Virant, all UCLA commits, were among the 40 players selected from a group of 144 to remain in Cary, N.C., this week for the USA Baseball 18-under national team trials and training camp.

Fried, Giolito and VIrant all competed this past week in the USA Baseball Tournament of Stars and were selected based on their performances in four all-star games, as well as individual workouts and scouting combines Friday. Eleven of the 40 players selected are from high schools in California.

The pitchers will participate in games Friday and Saturday, looking to make the 28-player cut to return to North Carolina in September for the U.S. national team training camp that will produce a final 20-player roster to compete in the COPABE Pan American AAA 18-under championships Sept. 23-Oct. 2 in Cartagena, Colombia.

Harvard-Westlake catcher Arden Pabst was selected to the U.S. 16-under national team trials and training camp roster. Chatsworth's Tom Meusborn is one of the assistant coaches on the U.S. 16-under staff.

Simi Valley resident Tommy Costello was picked for the U.S. 14-under national team trials and training camp roster.

TRACK: Taft grad Anderson selected Pac-10 male athlete of the year

| | Comments (0) |

Following his thrilling 400-meter hurdles victory Sunday at the USA Track and Field Outdoor National Championships in Eugene, Ore., Taft graduate Jeshua Anderson secured another career first Monday by being honored as Pac-10 Men's Track Athlete of the Year.

Although Anderson won three NCAA titles in the 400 hurdles at Washington State, one of only three athletes in Division I history to accomplish the feat, this is the first time he has received the conference award.

Anderson clocked a lifetime-best 47.921 to edge Bershawn Jackson (47.930) and Angelo Taylor (47.94), who have a combined seven USATF outdoor national titles between them, in the final at Oregon's Hayward Field.

All three athletes, who join South Africa's L.J. van Zyl as the only individuals in the world this year to run under 48 seconds, will represent the U.S. in August at the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

Anderson was joined by three other first-time Pac-10 recipients in USC's Nia Ali, who was honored as Women's Track Athlete of the Year after winning the NCAA title in the 100 hurdles and finishing fifth Sunday in the USATF outdoor final.

Arizona's Brigetta Barrett, the NCAA high jump champion, was recognized as the conference's top female field athlete, validating her selection by winning the USATF outdoor title Friday with a clearance of 6 feet, 4 3/4 inches.

Arizona State's Jordan Clarke won the NCAA title in the shot put (64-9 3/4) to secure Pac-10 Men's Field Athlete of the Year.

HS FOOT: Linemen look to measure up at COC passing tourney

| | Comments (0) |

CANYON COUNTRY -- The three-day College of the Canyons passing tournament begins today featuring some of the area's top quarterbacks such as Canyon's Jonathan Jerozal, Moorpark's Grant Rohach, Westlake's Justin Moore, Hart's Cory Mayes, Chaminade's Logan Scott and Alemany's Devon Dunn, and there is a twist - the linemen are participating, too, by competing in a strength contest culminating in a five-man tug of war at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in conjunction with the tournament championship.

Other tournaments have included strength contests, but the College of the Canyons event will put the linemen front and center at the end, and that's something unique.

"The tug of war is right in the middle of everything, so that makes it pretty cool," said organizer Garrett Tujague, head coach of Canyons. "They also do a football relay run, a bench-press competition, a sled drive and a pass-rush competition. Plus, there's an obstacle course where they're driving sleds, running in out between bags, jumping over bags. It's hilarious."

Alemany could pull a sweep. The Warriors just won the 24-team Conejo Classic on Saturday, and they looked good in a strength competition the previous Saturday at the Saugus Under The Lights tournament.

But the favorite for the strength competition is Canyon, led by linemen Alex Vaughn (6-foot-2, 240 pounds), Juan Rodriguez (6-0, 260) and Brandon Granados (6-1, 240), all of whom helped the Cowboys win at Saugus.

"It's great. I think it's great the linemen get to be involved," Canyon quarterback Jonathan Jerozal said. "It's always good to see them there, especially for me, and they're pretty jazzed after winning at the Saugus Under The Lights tournament. I think they're trying to make a statement."

Canyon figures to be tough in the passing tournament, too, especially if top receiver Drew Wolitarsky is healthy, as the junior is trying to shake off a minor shoulder injury.

Some of the top round-robin matchups today are Hart vs. Valencia at 3 p.m., Moorpark vs. Valencia at 3:50 p.m. and Canyon vs. Chaminade at 7:10 p.m. On Tuesday, some of the matchups to watch out for are Alemany vs. Taft at 3:50 p.m., Alemany vs. Westlake at 5:30 p.m., and Crescenta Valley vs. Westlake at 6:20 p.m.

There are more passing tournaments planned: L.A. Valley College plays host to a large-scale tournament July 9-10, and Edison High in Huntington Beach is hosting a tournament the same weekend.

BASEBALL: UCLA prospect Fried pitches team into final in North Carolina

| | Comments (0) |

Montclair Prep left-hander Max Fried pitched four hitless innings Saturday, walking three and striking out four to secure his second win for the AABC all-stars in a 4-2 pool-play victory over the Dixie all-stars at the USA Baseball Tournament of Stars in Cary, N.C.

Fried, a UCLA commit, has walked five and struck out five in five hitless innings for AABC, which clinched a berth in Sunday's final. After appearing in the past two games for AABC, Camarillo's Hunter Virant, another UCLA-bound talent, didn't pitch Saturday.

The PONY all-stars gave up three ninth-inning runs in a 10-9 loss to the Babe Ruth all-stars, preventing a showdown of future UCLA hurlers in Sunday's championship game with Harvard-Westlake's Lucas Giolito eligible to pitch for PONY after throwing four innings in Thursday's 13-1 victory over NABF.

Giolito could still see action in the third-place game against Dixie, with Virant a likely possibility to pitch for AABC in the final against Babe Ruth.

All three area pitchers are among the 144 players competing for spots on the U.S. 18-under national baseball team.

BOYS' TRACK: Cabral finally gets wind-legal state 110 hurdles record

| | Comments (0) |

After a number of close calls throughout his senior season, Agoura's Johnathan Cabral finally produced the fastest wind-legal time in state history in the 110-meter hurdles with a prelim effort of 13.36 seconds Friday at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

Cabral, the two-time state champion, had run a wind-aided 13.27 at the Southern Section Masters meet May 27, along with a wind-legal 13.41 at the Golden West Invitational on June 11, which had equaled the No. 2 mark in state history with Mission Viejo's Steve Kerho from 1982.

But Cabral, who will run at University of Oregon next season, finally delivered a wind-legal effort on his future home track that eclipsed the 2004 standard of 13.39 set by James Logan of Union City's Kevin Craddock.

Cabral, who is seeded second entering the 2:25 p.m. final behind Florida sophomore Eddie Lovett (13.23), is closing in on the national high school record of 13.30 set in 1990 by Chris Nelloms of Dunbar High in Dayton, Ohio.

BASEBALL: UCLA prospects Giolito, Virant pitch well in North Carolina

| | Comments (0) |

Harvard-Westlake's Lucas Giolito, a UCLA commit, pitched four innings, allowing one hit, one walk and one run with five strikeouts Thursday for the PONY all-stars in a 13-1 victory over the NABF all-stars at the USA Baseball Tournament of Stars in Cary, N.C.

Camarillo's Hunter Virant, another UCLA-bound pitcher, worked his second scoreless inning in as many days for the AABC all-stars, striking out two in a 12-7 victory over the RBI all-stars, who rallied from a 10-run deficit with seven unanswered runs.

Virant, who secured the save in Wednesday's 8-7 victory over American Legion, has struck out five of the six batters he's faced in two innings.

AABC and PONY are both 2-0 in their pools and could meet in Sunday's final with victories Saturday.

No games are scheduled Friday, with all 144 athletes in attendance -- including Montclair Prep's Max Fried, another UCLA commit -- receiving position-by-position evaluation by scouts, who are trying to select the roster for the U.S. 18-under national baseball team.

GIRLS' TRACK: Weissenbach is Gatorade national athlete of the year

| | Comments (0) |

Following a junior season highlighted by a pair of national high school records, Harvard-Westlake's Amy Weissenbach has been honored as Gatorade's national girls' track and field athlete of the year.

Weissenbach, who secured the Gatorade state award Wednesday, is the area's fifth female track athlete to receive the Gatorade national honor and the first since L.A. Baptist graduate Allyson Felix won in 2003. Harvard-Westlake assistant Joanna Hayes was the Gatorade state and national recipient at J.W. North in 1995.

Weissenbach joins Jill Oakes, the 2002 girls' soccer player of the year, as Harvard-Westlake's only two recipients of Gatorade's national honors.

Weissenbach defended her state 800-meter title June 4 in Clovis, clocking a National Federation High School record of 2 minutes, 2.04 seconds, the top 19-under outdoor mark by an American this year and fastest in the world among 17-under female athletes.

Harvard-Westlake's Cami Chapus, K.C. Cord, Lauren Hansson and Weissenbach set a national prep record Saturday in the distance medley relay, clocking 11:22.23 at the New Balance Outdoor National Championships in Greensboro, N.C.

Weissenbach, who boasts a 4.23 GPA, ran the leadoff 1,200-meter leg in 3:24.85, believed to be the fastest in prep history. She also anchored the Wolverines to a national title June 17 in the sprint medley relay (3:55.12), the second-fastest time in state history and No. 14 on the country's all-time list.

Weissenbach and her teammates will compete Saturday the Nike Track Nationals in Eugene, Ore., where she won the 800 title in 2:08.42 last year.

HS FOOT: Get ready for the 24-team Conejo Valley Classic

| | Comments (0) |

Just one mile apart, Oaks Christian and Westlake are quickly becoming heated football rivals, and the teams meet again at 6 p.m. Friday in a seven-on-seven passing contest at the eighth annual Conejo Valley Classic, a two-day event featuring a total of 24 teams at Westlake, Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park highs.

After Westlake defeated Oaks Christian in the regular season last year, Oaks Christian came back with a 29-28 win over the visiting Warriors in the Southern Section Northern Division championship.

The circumstances are much less formal today, but the competitive juices should be flowing, as both teams are working in junior quarterbacks. Oaks Christian has unleashed transfer Luke Falk from Utah, while Westlake's Justin Moore takes over for two-year star Nick Isham.

Both have some top returning receivers, as USC-bound Jordan Payton is back for Oaks Christian, and Nevada-bound Cody Tuttle and heavily recruited tight end Johnny Stuart are back for Westlake.

"We're young, but we should be OK. We should be getting better," Westlake coach Jim Benkert said. "It's a pretty strong tournament, and between the three sites, I think we have some of the better passing teams at Westlake.

"But when the season starts in the fall, I think our strength will be our offensive and defensive lines."

Some of other top programs participating are Moorpark, Alemany, Camarillo, Royal, Thousand Oaks and Palmdale. The championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Thousand Oaks.

Defending tournament champion Thousand Oaks is inexperienced at the skill positions, though the Lancers looked sharp last weekend while advancing to the semifinals of the 24-team Saugus Under The Lights tournament.

Thousand Oaks is trying out quarterbacks Griffin Kramer and junior Clark Abourisk. Kramer, a 5-11, 210-pounder, is the son of former NFL quarterback Erik Kramer.

"I think Griffin has the advantage in terms of arm strength, and Clark's advantage would knowledge of our offense because he has grown up in the system," Thousand Oaks coach Mike Leibin said.

As for replacing receiver Richard Mullaney, who scored 20 touchdowns last year, that's not going to be easy.

"Richard was so phenomenal, a once-in-a-lifetime kind of player," Leibin said. "The difference this year is we have a bunch of productive wide receivers, four guys and two tight ends that are going to be pretty solid us. No one is going to get 80 or 100 catches, but we might have a bunch who get 40."

The two top returning receivers are Blake Howell and L.J. Wiley, and converted defensive back Nathan Debeikes is coming along, too.

Like Westlake, Thousand Oaks should be strong up front offensively and defensively, Leibin said.

"Our top offensive lineman, Tom McNutt, is a returning center, and from an intelligence and work-ethic standpoint, his leadership is as good as anyone I've been around for an offensive lineman."

Alemany should be one of the favorites. After advancing to the Pac-5 semifinals last year, the Warriors have a promising new quarterback in Devon Dunn, who led the JV team to an undefeated record last season, while most of the top receivers are back, including rising star Jerico Richardson.

"I really like the way the team is coming along. We're playing well in these passing things, even though I don't put a whole lot of stock in it," Alemany coach Dean Herrington said. "Our receivers are going to be something really special, and we have eight kids back on defense from last year, plus we're a strong football team - the strongest team I've ever been associated with."

HS FOOT: H.W.'s Heltzer headed to UCLA

| | Comments (0) |

Max Heltzer, a quarterback from Harvard-Westlake, has committed to UCLA as a preferred walk-on.

HS FOOT: Royal looks like it's for real

| | Comments (0) |

It's early, but Royal backed up its surprisingly good performance at the Saugus Under The Lights tournament this past weekend with another stellar outing today at Ventura, going 5-0.

The Highlanders have often underachieved through the years, but this year's team might turn it around.

HS BASE: Here's a report on what's up with locals in minor leagues

| | Comments (0) |

Adam Ehrlich, a catcher from Campbell Hall High drafted in the sixth round by the St. Louis Cardinals, has signed a contract, opting to play professional baseball instead of honoring a letter-of-intent to Loyola Marymount University.
Ehrlich flew to Florida today to report.

"It's really exciting. I'm excited to be down in Florida getting my career started with a great organization," Ehrlich said. "I've been dreaming about making it to the majors since I first picked up a bat and hit off a tee at age 2."

Ehrlich batted .566 with five home runs and a San Fernando Valley-best 49 RBIs as a senior. He's the first Campbell Hall graduate to sign a pro baseball contract.

CHATSWORTH DUO THIS CLOSE TO MAJORS

Chatsworth High alums Matt Dominguez and Bryan Petersen are teammates at triple-A New Orleans, one step from the majors with the Florida Marlins.

Petersen is trying to make it back after appearing in 23 games in 2010 and four games this season. He is among the Pacific Coast League's leading hitters with a .332 average, 11 home runs and 24 RBIs in 57 games.

Dominguez, recovering from a fractured elbow, is batting .270 with four home runs and 26 RBIs in 31 games. He has 50 home runs in five minor league seasons.

There are other local prospects in the Marlins organization, including Single-A teammates Christian Yelich (Westlake) and Brent Keys (Simi Valley) at Greensboro (N.C.).

Yelich, drafted last year in the first round (23rd overall), tore it up in Rookie ball - batting .362 and .375 for two teams - and he has looked good in Single-A, too. The outfielder is hitting .272 with five home runs, 32 RBIs and 14 stolen bases in 62 games. Keys, drafted one year earlier in the 17th round, is batting .208 in 17 games.

EX-HART ACE LOOKS TO FIND GROOVE IN TRIPLE-A

After dominating at every minor-league level since being drafted in 2008 in the first round (38th overall) by the Kansas City Royals, former Hart pitcher Michael Montgomery is taking his knocks at Triple-A Omaha. The left-hander is 2-4 with a 5.83 ERA with 46 walks in 79 innings. In 2010, he was 14-5 with four teams.

WILL HE OR WON'T HE?

Tyler Glasnow, drafted in the fifth round by the Pittsburgh Pirates, has yet to sign, as the 6-foot-7 pitcher is weighing a University of Portland scholarship. Something could happen soon because Pittsburgh's fourth and sixth picks just signed.

EX SIMI VALLEY STAR A JETHAWK

Jonathan Meyer, who helped carry Simi Valley to the 2009 Southern Section Div. I baseball championship, has not strayed far.

Drafted by the Houston Astros in the third round, Meyer is playing third base for the Single-A Lancaster Jethawks, and after striking out 177 times in 183 games over his first two seasons, he's turning it around in Lancaster. The 20-year-old is batting .264 with six home runs and 34 RBIs in 64 games.

HS BASE: Campbell Hall's Ehrlich signs with Cards

| | Comments (0) |

Adam Ehrlich, a Campbell Hall catcher, has signed with the St. Louis Cardinals after being drafted in the sixth round, opting to play professionally instead of going to Loyola Marymount University.

Prep Sports: Two spearate families, similar athletic families

| | Comments (0) |

The Holiday family at Campbell Hall and the Owusu family at Oaks Christian have really got it going on these days.

First up, let's talk about the four children of Toya and Shawn Holiday.

Justin just finished up at Washington and will be in the NBA draft Thursday. A likely second round pick, according to some experts.

Jrue played one season at UCLA and is turning into an all-star guard for the Philadelphia 76'ers.

Lauren is entering her senior year of high school in September and is being recruited by several PAC-10 schools for basketball.

Aaron is an incoming ninth grader, who scored a remarkable 54 points against Simi Valley in his first ever high school varsity game.

Not bad, at all.

How about the Owusu's.

Brian plays football at Harvard.

Chris is a standout at Stanford who is expected to be a first round selection in the 2012 NFL draft.

Crystal just graduated two weeks ago and is headed to Columbia to study and play basketball.

Francis is a rising junior prospect and expected to be a huge factor for Bill Redell's football team this fall.

Two great families with a lot to be proud of academically and athletically.

HS FOOT: Westlake loses in Saugus tourney final

| | Comments (0) |

SAUGUS -- Six months after a heartbreaking one-point loss in the Southern Section Northern Division football championship, Westlake High is putting the pieces back together.

Most of the top skill players from last year's team have graduated, and among the those stepping in is quarterback Justin Moore, a junior who helped lead Westlake to the final of the two-day, 24-team Saugus Under The Lights passing tournament Saturday at Central Park, where the Warriors lost 36-16 to Long Beach Poly in the championship.

"I think I definitely understand the position," said Moore, a backup to star Nick Isham the past two seasons. "If I can distribute the football, everything will go just fine."

There are no helmets or pads in seven-on-seven passing competition, but succeeding in such a large-scale tournament takes a lot of energy, as the winner must win four games in four hours with only a five-minute break between games.

"My arm is tired, we're all tired, but we'll get over it," Moore said.

In the final, Moore hit Bradley Wellman on a 50-yard touchdown, and he also connected with Cody Tuttle on a scoring pass, but after falling behind 36-2, Westlake dug too big of a hole.

"It's tiring, but tournaments like these prepare you for the fourth quarter in a real game when you're looking at the sideline wishing you could take a break, but you keep going," Tuttle said.

Westlake should be in good shape this coming fall. Passing tournaments are one thing, but the Warriors return blue-chip defensive lineman Justin Solis and coveted junior defensive back Dashon Hunt, along with top kicker Alex Ball and starting offensive linemen Javier Aguilera, Anthony Davanzo, Jordie Hannel and Keith Ramljak.

ROYAL FLUSH WITH SUCCESS

Perhaps the biggest surprise was Royal, which advanced to the semifinals. Along the way, the unsung Highlanders eliminated Loyola and Hart.

Logan Bateman, a converted receiver playing quarterback for the first time, showed good poise and a strong arm for someone just learning the position.

"What matters is how everything translates once you put on the pads, but we've got a pretty good football team," Royal coach Kevin Flye said.

Bateman found success passing to tight ends Trevor Kanteman and Garrett Parkinson.
"It's my first year playing quarterback, so I guess this is a little surprising," Bateman said. "We're playing well. We've just got to keep going."

HART DB RECOVERS FROM BEING KNOCKED OUT

Hart defensive back Tim White was hospitalized Friday after being knocked unconscious in a collision with an opposing player, but coach Mike Herrington said White only will miss about a week.

"He got hit on the chin and was knocked out for about four minutes, but he didn't have a concussion or anything like that, not even a headache," Herrington said. "All he needed was a few stitches because his mouth was pretty bloody, but he was back here today supporting his teammates."

LITTLE TEAM THAT COULD

After losing all three pool contests with scoring more than two touchdowns in a game Friday, small-schools power Sierra Canyon looked much better on Saturday, winning the consolation championship with three victories in a row, including a 38-14 win over Pioneer Valley in the final.

"Our coach (Jon Ellinghouse) definitely got into us pretty good yesterday, but today we held our own," Sierra Canyon quarterback Tyler Stewart said.

HS FOOT: Comeback-minded Hart looks good at Saugus tourney

| | Comments (0) |

SAUGUS -- After failing to make the football playoffs last season for the first time in coach Mike Herrington's 22-year career, Hart High is looking to forge a comeback behind returning quarterback Cory Mayes, and the Indians looked sharp today at the 10th annual Saugus Under The Lights passing tournament at Central Park.

Hart went 2-1 in pool competition, defeating Pioneer Valley 34-14 and Crescenta Valley 36-30 and losing 16-12 to tournament favorite Oaks Christian.

"I think we've got good group because there's more depth, which means more competition between the players at practice, and that will make us better football team on Friday nights," Herrington said. "I told everyone, even Cory Mayes, that every position is open because of our lack of success last year.

"When spring practice started, I told everyone they had to fight for playing time and would be getting equal reps, and Cory worked hard and outplayed the others."

With a strong passing arm and a flair for reading opposing defenses, Mayes consistently found receivers Riley Stauffer, Davis Koppenhaver and freshman Trent Irwin.

"We spread it out pretty equally today," Mayes said. "Passing tournaments like these are good for the quarterbacks and receivers to get together on routes."

Hart also returns kicker Rhett Allmond, who had seven field goals last season, along with running back Dylan Edwards and offensive linemen James Fairchild and John Perkins.

OAKS CHRISTIAN LOOKS TO RELOAD

Defending Northern Division champion Oaks Christian went 2-0-1. The Lions have a high-profile transfer in quarterback Luke Falk, a junior who is being tutored by top private coach Steve Clarkson, and Oaks Christian is also giving a long look to junior Cody Cordell and sophomore Brandon Dawkins.

"They don't have All-American receivers like Jordan Payton in Utah," Falk said. "There's a lot of talent. I like it a lot here."'

Besides his relationship with Clarkson, Falk said one of the reasons the family has moved to California is because his two sisters are trying to launch a music career with their band, Falk.

"They're pretty good. Their plan is to make a CD and get a record contract," Falk said.
In addition to Oaks Christian's four-point win over Hart, the Lions defeated Pioneer Valley 34-12 and tied Crescenta Valley 26-26.]

"I think all three of the quarterbacks showed some good signs and some things they have to work on," Oaks Christian coach Bill Redell said.

MAKING A NEW START
A total of 24 teams are participating in the two-day tournament that concludes Saturday with the championship game at 8 p.m. The summer is just starting, and a lot of teams like Newbury Park are embracing a new start. The Panthers went 3-7 and did not make the playoffs last year, so the focus is on improvement.

"It's going to take a lot of hard work, and this year's team has better work ethic than last year's team," linebacker Michael DiFronzo said.

Saugus is in a similar situation. The Centurions haven't won a playoff game in two years, but quarterback Jared Carbajal returns, and he is feeling good about the Centurions.

"Our team is looking pretty solid," Carbajal said. "These tournaments, I come to win, but it's a lot of showboating compared to Friday nights once the real season starts."

DOING IT WITH DEFENSE

Chaminade finished 2-1, impressing defensively with linebackers Tal Dardashti, Zander Small and Jacob Bowman.

"Our defense looks good," Dardashti said. "It's a very physical defense, and it looks like we're going to have a big year. The whole team loves to hit - but not here, of course."

Taft is the only local school participating in the inaugural Westchester Summer Tip-Off tournament June 27-July 2.

Here is the schedule in order from top to bottom of the bracket.

Windward vs. Morningside, Tuesday June 27, 2 p.m.
St. Bernard vs. Bishop Montgomery, Tuesday June 28, 3:30 p.m.
Narbonne vs. Serra, Tuesday June 28, 5 p.m.
Westchester vs. Compton Centennial, Tuesday June 28, 6:30 p.m.

West Torrance vs. Taft, Monday June 27, 2 p.m.

Peninsula vs. Washington Prep, Monday June 27, 5 p.m.
Mater Dei vs. Venice, Monday June 27, 6:30 p.m.

A possible Taft vs. Palisades second round matchup could be very interesting.

Windward has incoming freshman Mason Shepard and Roy Hemsley.

St. Bernard has an incoming freshman nicknamed "Buddah", so I can only imagine he will be a good one.

Mater Dei is also entered in the Fairfax tournament. It will be interesting to see which players play at which tournament

HS FOOT: Top QBs to participate in Saugus tourney

| | Comments (0) |

Many of the area's top quarterbacks are on display today on the first day of the fifth annual Saugus Under The Lights passing tournament at Central Park, a large-scale event featuring 24 teams beginning with pool competition at 2 p.m., then an elimination tournament Saturday concluding with the championship game at 8 p.m.

Among those expected to participate are Canyon's Jonathan Jerozal, Westlake's Justin Moore, Oaks Christian's Luke Falk, Hart's Cory Mayes, Sierra Canyon's Tyler Stewart, Chaminade's Logan Scott, Notre Dame's Kelly Hiliniski, Campbell Hall's R.J. Gordon and Saugus' Jared Carbajal.

"It's invite only, so everyone that's coming has been personally invited, and we feel we're bringing together the best competition in Southern California," Saugus coach Jason Bornn said. "There are no easy games for anyone. As far as I know, they're all good teams."

Westlake is the reigning champion after defeating Long Beach Poly last year in the final, and there's a chance the teams could meet again on Saturday.

Participants play three round-robin games Friday, then the top 16 compete in an elimination tournament Saturday.

"To win the championship, you have to play seven games over two days, including four wins on Saturday with no break in-between, and that's not easy - it's a lot of football," Bornn said.

Alpha League rivals Sierra Canyon and Campbell Hall are the two small-schools entries, and both feature high-powered passing attacks that could help the underdogs succeed against much bigger schools.

"Tyler Stewart is a lot better than he was last year, and we're excited to see what he can do," Sierra Canyon coach Jon Ellinghouse said. "We've had a good summer so far, so we're excited."

Stewart passed for 2,861 yards and 39 touchdowns last year to help Sierra Canyon to the Southern Section East Valley final, but he has yet to prove himself against elite opponents.
Sierra Canyon receiver/defensive Julian Brooks is back, and he has been offered scholarships by Washington State, Colorado, Arizona, Arizona State, Utah State, Utah and Oregon State.

"He's a very talented kid because half the colleges are recruiting him as a receiver, and half are recruiting him as a defensive back," Ellinghouse said. "He has some big shoes to fill as our No. 1 receiver, and I think he will do that, no problem."

Sierra Canyon running backs Xavier Menifield and Julian Brooks are back, too.

Gordon passed for 2,536 yards and 22 touchdowns last year for Campbell Hall, and 6-foot-3 receivers Josh Ross and Dustin Drai are back after combining for 82 catches as juniors.

"I think it's going to be great for us," said Campbell Hall coach Russ Gordon, R.J.'s father. "We played in a tournament at Antelope Valley College last weekend and lost to Hart by only two points. We should have beat them, too, so I think we're ready to compete and to show our stuff."

The only City Section entry is San Fernando. A year ago, the Tigers took their lumps at the Saugus tournament, but this year they're much improved, coach Tom Hernandez said.

"Our new quarterback, Javier Aguilar, throws a good ball, and we beat Notre Dame in a passing game last week," Hernandez said. "Our JV team was undefeated last year, and we have about 15 guys from that team, and Javier was the top offensive player in the league.

"We had a lot of young guys and weren't too good last year, but this year we're pretty good."

HS FOOT: Valencia hopeful ready to renew QB tradition

| | Comments (0) |

Sean Murphy is the new quarterback for Valencia, and junior is hoping to follow in the footsteps of prolific predecessors Alex Bishop and Michael Herrick.

It won't be easy because and all four starting receivers and all-state running back Steven Manfro have graduated, but Murphy feels privileged to be the Vikings' new signal caller - a dream job for most prep quarterbacks.

"I've learned a lot from Alex Bishop, and Michael Herrick has come to a few practices and helped out," Murphy said. "I'm loving it, trying to learn how to be a great quarterback."

HS FOOT: Farrar might be Alemany's newest star-in-making

| | Comments (0) |

Impact transfer Jeff Farrar, an Alemany sophomore from Cathedral who started last season at receiver and defensive back, is hoping to find his way onto the field for the high-powered Warriors, and the youngster looked fast and athletic Wednesday in a four-way passing tournament at Valencia.

"I like Alemany, and I feel like I can get into the rotation because they're giving me a good look," Farrar said.

In other Alemany news, junior receiver/defensive back Steven Mitchell has been offered a scholarship by UCLA. He sat out the four-way Wednesday because of an ankle injury.

HS FOOT: New faces at Oaks Christian could make big impact

| | Comments (0) |

Oaks Christian has scored a coup with the enrollment of freshman offensive lineman Reno Rosene, who is expected to be the next big thing, quite literally, as the young blocker is 6-4 and 303 pounds with a national reputation in youth-football circles.

The defending Northern Division champion Lions already were stacked with returnees such as USC-bound receiver Jordan Payton, defensive back Ishmael Adams and linebacker Carlos Mendoza, and there are an influx of transfers including noted quarterback Luke Falk from Utah, receiver Zach Hernandez from Alemany, linebacker Tyrone Faanono from Oxnard and defensive back Malik Cyphers from Narbonne.

"We're looking extremely good," Payton said. "We have a lot of returners back and a lot of good transfers coming in."

Adams and Mendoza have multiple college offers.

"We have a lot of speed. If our quarterback comes through, we should be pretty good," said Redell, who plans to test out three quarterbacks.

HS FOOT: Little Crespi receiver should have another big year

| | Comments (0) |

Summer football is heating up, and among the intriguing players to watch is Mike Davison, a top receiver at Crespi who is listed at 5-foot-3 and 130 pounds but is actually closer to 5 feet.

The biggest mistake opponents can make to underestimate the little receiver who is coming off a junior season that included 56 catches for 637 yards and six touchdowns in addition to several long, weaving kick returns.

Davison already has a scholarship offer from Alabama State, and he should have another big season if Crespi can re-fortify its passing offense after graduating star quarterback Kenny Stenhouse and UCLA bound-receiver Devin Lucien.

"Oh, it's a blast to watch Mike play, and it's even more fun to coach him," Crespi coach Jon Mack said. "You may see him as a little over five feet tall, but he sees himself as a 6-3, 225-pounder. In his mind, he is unstoppable, and that's his greatest weapon - his confidence."

Meanwhile, Crespi needs to find someone to pass Davison and fellow returnee Chris Harper the football, and when the Celts' three-week break ends next week, a huge batch of candidates will compete for the starting position.

"There are five or six of them right now, so we're going to have to narrow it down a bit," Mack said. "That's going to happen pretty soon, but for now they're all working hard, and I feel confident about all of them."

Boys' basketball: Taft summer league recap

| | Comments (0) |

Buckley 64
Sierra Canyon 60

Buckley held a 16 point lead midway through the second half but had to hold off a rally from the Trailblazers.

Junior Tyler Coppin-Carter and sophomore Larry Bush looked fantastic for Buckley and the Griffins will be a huge favorite to win the Liberty League, once again.

Sierra Canyon was missing Julian Brooks, junior Jahmel Taylor and sophomore Bryan Alberts.

The Trailblazers are in a stretch of playing nine consecutive days.

Moorpark 72
Montclair Prep 50

Jake Myers, Jordan Russell and Mitchell Sagely played well for Moorpark, who was coming off a 39-point victory against La Canada on Sunday at Oaks Christian.

Amonte Dees scored 21 points to lead Montclair Prep.

The Mounties were missing guard trey Dickerson, who sat out with an ankle injury.

Harvard-Westlake 48
El Camino Real 45

The Wolverines let a double-digit lead in the second half disappear but scored two layups in the final minute to come away with the victory.

Harvard-Westlake could be the regions top-ranked team with Taft next year.

Harvard-Westlake features Zena Edosomwan, Josh Hearlihy, and sophomores Michael Sheng and Derrick Newton.

Freshman Alex Copeland and Blake Colquitt are players to keep and eye on down the road.

El Camino Real is an interesting team that should only continue to get better.

Sophomores Maleke Haynes, Julian Richardson, Evan Wardlow, Julian Rochelin, Malcolm Wadlow and Christian Ware-Berry are youngsters to watch.

Alemany 76
Sierra Canyon 53

Alemany rebounded from a 15-point setback against Renaissance Academy on Sunday to overwhelm Sierra Canyon, who was playing its second game of the night.

Brothers Marqueze and Michael Coleman and point guard Max Guercy will be the main players for the Warriors, who should get solid production from Jerico Richardson, K.J. Moffett, Andrew English and sophomore Rahzaun Henderson

Boys' basketball: Outstanding game in the early summer from the Oaks Chr. tip-off showcase event

| | Comments (0) |

The final game of the Oaks Christian summer tip-off showcase proved to be the best Sunday night.

Private school powers Oaks Christian and Sierra Canyon played a game worthy of championship quality.

Both teams are defending Southern Section champions and the coaches, players and fans were in mid-season form.

Sierra Canyon led most of the way behind sophomore Bryan Alberts and Julian Brooks but needed an Alberts 3-pointer at the buzzer to come away with a 77-75 victory.

Oaks Christian took a one-point lead with eight seconds remaining when Anson Moye found Duncan Miller alone underneath the basket as the lions overcame a four-point deficit in the final minute.

However, Alberts calmly got the ball near mid-court, dribbled up the left sideline and rose up from the left wing for the game winner.

Brooks finished with 25 points and Alberts had 24 for a Trailblazers team that will be loaded next year.

Jahmel Taylor, a junior guard being heavily recruited, didn't even play the whole weekend.

Chass Bryan scored a game high 39 points to lead Oaks Christian.

Bryan and Brooks were going right at each other, matching baskets and playful trash-talking.

Bryan scored 37 two days earlier in a double overtime victory against Calabasas.

Coaches Ryan Silver and Andre Chevalier were both amped up, the fans had plenty to say about the referees who called 48 fouls and the players were terrific.

Boys' basketball: Oaks Christian's Chass Bryan making jaws drop

| | Comments (0) |

It has been quite an impressive two-day run for Oaks Christian standout guard Chass Bryan.

Bryan scored 37 points Friday in a 73-72 double overtime victory against Calabasas and poured in 19 points, including two 3-pointers in the final minute of a 102-96 setback in the War on the Floor/Future Stars game Saturday at Moorpark High.

Bryan is expected to carry much of the load next year for an Oaks Christian team that won the Div. IV-A championship against Buckley but graduated Blair Holliday, Dillon van der Wal, Taylor Hange and Jono Wening.

Bryan is an electrifying point guard who can score in bunches. Another plus is a motor that never stops running.

Definitely a player to watch next year who should begin to receive high college recruiting interest from the power conferences.

Oaks Christian plays Sunday at 7 p.m. at home against Sierra canyon, in what should be an entertaining affair. Sierra canyon has some of the best young talent around.

The Lions play next weekend at the War on the Floor tournament at Pierce College, at the "To the Rack Invitational" at Oaks Christian June 24-26 and end the month with the Nike Fairfax tournament June 28-July 2.

HS BASE: St. Francis' Hubinger helps Southern Section to all-star win

| | Comments (0) |

In four baseball seasons at St. Francis High, David Hubinger never won a playoff game.
But the Pepperdine-bound catcher saved his best for last Saturday in the fifth annual City vs. Southern Section All-Star Game, going 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs to help the Southern Section to a 15-3 win before a crowd of about 600 at Birmingham High.

Hubinger did not make an appearance until the seventh inning, and his two-run pinch-hit double highlighted a three-run rally to help the Southern Section pull away for good. An inning later, Hubinger drilled a run-scoring single, as the winners scored 10 runs over the final three innings to win going away.

He was named game MVP, as the Southern Section won for the first time since 2008 in a series the City leads 3-2.

"It feels great, but this trophy isn't just for me. It's for the whole Southern Section because we hadn't won this game in a while," Hubinger said. "No, we didn't win any playoff games at St. Francis, but it was still a great four years - we just came up a little short. The Mission League is tough."

Valencia's Nick Rivas earned the relief win, pitching for the first time since April 27 after missing the last month of the season because of a sore arm.

"The kids played well. We had a lot of talent out there," said Southern Section coach Zach Miller of Westlake. "I just told them the CIF hasn't won it in a few years, and then I let the kids do what they do. We had a lot of big, strong players. We were bigger, stronger and faster, and that's what mattered."

Calabasas' Alex Rubanowitz was 2 for 2 with a double, two RBIs and two runs for the Sourthern Section, scoring the go-ahead run the seventh. He also turned a double play for the final out in the bottom of the ninth.

"These were the best players in the area, so it was a great baseball game and a lot of fun," Rubanowitz said. "I enjoyed playing with second baseman Quincy Quintero (of Valencia). We were good up the middle."

Basketball: Future Stars class of 2012 showcase games from Moorpark High

| | Comments (0) |

The War on the Floor Future Stars girls' basketball game matching top players from the class of 2012 was a close affair Saturday at Moorpark High.

For one half.

The San Fernando Valley team had a six-point lead at halftime but sprinted away in the second half for an 86-53 victory against the Ventura County and surrounding areas team.

Bell-Jeff teammates Jasmine Smith and Rishonda Napier proved the Guards will one again be a team to be reckoned with next year.

Napier had 16 points and Smith finished with 13 and eight rebounds.

"I just felt it tonight," Smith said. "We regrouped at halftime and forced turnovers. We knew defense would win the game."

Smith helped the San Fernando Valley sprint out to a 12-0 lead and set the tone.

After the Ventura County team got back into the game by halftime, it seemed it would go down to the wire.

However, Chaminade's Annie Tarakchian made two free throws at the 9:00 mark to increase the lead to 19 points and things didn't get any better for Ventura County.

Tarakchian finished with 15 points and should be primed to lead the Eagles as they chase a Mission League championship next year.

Cleveland's Mariah Howard had 11 points and Alemany's Alex Moon chipped in eight.

Moon will be playing for new coach Bryan Camacho next year in the ultra-competitive Mission League.

Brianna Barrett, a USC-commit from Oaks Christian, scored 17 points to lead the Ventura County all-stars.

Ventura's Meghan Shank scored 10 points and Santa Clara of Oxnard's Cynthia Hernandez contributed eight points, including two 3-pointers.

BOYS' GAME

In one of the most exciting games of the four-year history of the event, the San Fernando Valley all-stars outlasted the Ventura County all-stars, 102-96.

Ten players scored in double figures, five for each team and neither team led by more than four points in the second half until the last three minutes.

Taft's Brandon Perry converted on two 3-point play opportunities in the final minutes to help San Fernando Valley pull away.

Perry rebounded two misses and came through with putbacks on each to extend the advantage to five and later 11 points.

"Working hard all the time,' Perry said.

Oaks Christian's Chass Bryan scored 19 points, including two 3-pointers in the last minute to help Ventura County rally.

Simi Valley's D.J. Saul made three free throws with 20.5 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to three but that was as close as it would get.

Chatsworth's Terrell Funchess scored 18 points, Notre Dame's Jonathan Bell and Kennedy Edwards had 14 and 11, respectively, and Cleveland's J.R. Williams scored 12.

Williams made a layup with under 10 seconds remaining to clinch the game.

Oxnard's Matt Ramon led all scorers with 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Ventura County.

Ramon kept his team close throughout the first half with gritty, hard-nosed play underneath.

Camarillo's Jake Christian's Mike Roletti scored 12 and Simi Valley's Austin Hawk had 10 Maulhardt scored 15 points, Oaks to round out the point production for Ventura County.

HS BASE: It's 1-1 after four at All-Star Game

| | Comments (0) |

The score is tied 1-1 after four innings in the City vs. Southern Section All Star Game.

The Southern Section scored when Alemany's Edgar Montes doubled and scored on a base hit by Valencia's Alex Bishop. The City answered when San Fernando's David Garcia got aboard on a bunt single, advanced on a grounder, took third on a wild pitch by Oaks Christian's Travis Radke, then scored on San Pedro's Anthony Canjura's single.

HS BASE: Birmingham's Torres wins HR contest

Calabasas 72 in double overtime

Chass Bryan scored 37 points and made the game winning 3-pointer with 10 seconds remaining.

Calabasas will look to Josh Cohan and Jeremy Lieberman next year.

Coach Jon Palarz is excited about sophomores Lieberman, Max Hoetzel and Austin Smith.

Kenneth Koffi could be a top freshman for the Coyotes.

Oaks Christian is expected to keep freshman Tyler Harris and Andre Chevalier on varsity.

Sophomore Bryan Alberts poured in 17 points but the Trailblazers could not overcome the absence of junior Jahmel Taylor and senior Julian Brooks.

Sierra Canyon unveiled freshman Malik Anderson and Juwan Trotter.

HS BASE: All-Star game set for Saturday at Birmingham

| | Comments (0) |

Good pitching is supposed to beat good hitting, and that theory is going to be put to the test at 6 p.m. Saturday at the fifth annual City vs. Southern Section All-Star Baseball Game at Birmingham High in Van Nuys.

There's a preceding home-run contest sponsored by Louisville Slugger, but players from both sides better save some of their best swings because nothing is going to come easy with so many aces on both sides.

Westlake's Alex Daley, the Marmonte League Pitcher of the Year, has been appointed the starter for the Southern Section, and waiting in the wings are Hart's Tyler Glasnow, Oaks Christian's Travis Radke, West Ranch's Ryan Keller and Westlake's Michael Miller.

The City Section is scheduled to start David Lira, who helped San Fernando win the City Section championship, and the others include Kennedy's Ryan Cruz and Alberto Flores, El Camino Real's Jose Cardona, Birmingham's Kevin Torres, Arleta's Javy Lopez and San Fernando's Jose Reyes.

Perhaps a final score of 1-0 would not be much of an all-star event, but it could happen.

"It's an honor to play in an all-star game and to play with the best," Torres said.

There is talk of some of the players using wood bats, a trend that figures to make things that much more difficult for hitters.

The important thing, as far as coaches from both teams are concerned, is for the participants to enjoy one last hurrah and to take advantage of a final opportunity to represent their schools and communities.

"That's exactly what it's about," City coach Scott Osder of Taft said. "All these seniors who've played against each other and been competing against each other for four years, now they get to share the field together with the best competition."

Part of the thrill has already happened for Southern Section coach Zach Miller of Westlake, who has enjoyed watching the players bond during a Wednesday practice.

"It's about the kids and a chance for people to come out and see some special players," Miller said. "The biggest thing was watching them interact with each other because a lot of them have been rivals for so long. Now they're teammates that get to laugh together. You have Pepsi and Coke, Nike and adidas, and now the City Section and the Southern Section.

"It might be a low-scoring game, but that's just a testament to Southern California baseball this year. It's going to be fun."

There are lots of impressive hitters, too.

Among the City Section's best are Chatsworth's Aaron Brown and Steven Karkenny (both of whom might be late because of a conflict with Chatsworth's annual team banquet), San Fernando's Reyes, Ssn Pedro's Bubba Costa and Taft's Michael Hymes.

The Southern Section counters with Valencia's Shane Zeile and James Bonds, Saugus' Nick Lombardi and Justin Sheehan and Alemany's Edgar Montes.

The City Section leads the series 3-1, including a 4-3 win last year.

"I'm excited to get a chance to play with all the guys I have played against these past four years," said City catcher Chris Whitmer of El Camino Real. "This is a great chance to show everyone just how tough the City really is."

Lira pitched 10 innings in his last appearance, a 2-1 win over El Camino Real in the City semifinals 10 days ago at USC. Tonight he'll probably be limited to an inning, two at the most, and he's OK with it.

"It's an accomplishment to be there, not just for us but for the community, school, coaches and family," Lira said.

Chatsworth's Moustakas to make big-league debut Friday at Angel Stadium

| | Comments (0) |

Staff and Wire Services
For three years Kansas City fans have waited to see Mike
Moustakas and Eric Hosmer, their heralded first-round picks of 2007 and '08, on the
field together.
Now it's about to happen. Hosmer has been manning first base since he was called up from
Triple-A Omaha on May 6 and has been the Royals' best hitter. Now Moustakas, a former standout at Chatsworth High, will make his major-league debut on Friday night at Angel Stadium.
"We'll put Moose at third," manager Ned Yost said when the move was announced following
Kansas City's 3-2 victory over Toronto on Thursday afternoon. "Get his big-league career started. He's been hot, swinging the bat well, driving in runs, playing good third base. Time's
right."
Moustakas was hitting .356 in his past 10 games. For the season at Omaha, he was hitting
.287 with 10 home runs and 44 RBIs.
Hosmer, who is hitting .309 with five home runs and 21 RBIs in just 32 games, was
delighted at the news.
"I couldn't be happier for him. I'm going to give him a call right now," Hosmer said.
"I'm really excited. One of my best friends in professional baseball. It's going to be
fun. We've been texting back and forth."
Hosmer and Moustakas are the most anticipated prospects the Royals have had since Bo
Jackson more than two decades ago.
Hosmer said he would have no advice for his friend.
"He doesn't need no advice from me. He's good enough," he said. "He's been through it
all. He's going to come up here and just be nice and relaxed. The first game will be
exciting for him, in his home town. I'm sure all his family will be there. He's going to
come up here and hit his stride."

HS FOOT: High-powered Alemany prepares to renew success

| | Comments (0) |

School's out for summer, and graduation day marks the unofficial beginning of football season, as a lot of area's top programs have begun conditioning drills and are preparing to compete in passing tournaments.

After finishing as a Southern Section Pac-5 semifinalist this past winter, Alemany is breaking in a new quarterback, junior Devon Dunn, and his summer development figures to be crucial for a program with championship aspirations in the section's most competitive division.

"He's got a great arm, he's a smart kid, and he runs real well," coach Dean Herrington said.
Dunn has a bunch of elite receivers, and that should help. Among the returnees are junior Steven Mitchell, who has been offered by Washington and Southern Methodist, along with Jerico Richardson and Corey Sims.

"It's the best receiving corps I've ever had - even at College of the Canyons," Herrington said.

Alemany debuts Saturday in the large-scale Pierce College passing tournament, and among the participants are top passing programs Westlake, St. Bonaventure, Canyon, Sierra Canyon and Dorsey.

"There are some solid teams in it," Herrington said.

An intriguing Alemany prospect is sophomore Deyon Glass, a 6-foot, 230-pound linebacker who is the brother of former Notre Dame star running back Rodney Glass, who ran a 10.4 100 meters and was one of the San Fernando Valley's fastest football players ever before moving on to Arizona State.

"Deyon is a lot bigger than his brother, and he moves real well," Herrington said. "I can't say he's going to be a starter because it's just the beginning of summer, but you can kind of read between the lines."

HS FOOT: Canyon up in arms with QB Jerozal

| | Comments (0) |

After passing for 3,048 yards and 32 touchdowns as a junior, Canyon's Jonathan Jerozal is the area's most productive returning quarterback. There should be more big performances ahead because the Cowboys also return receiver Drew Wolitarsky, who had 77 receptions for 1,472 yards and 13 touchdowns.

"Everybody looks good, and Drew is looking outstanding and better than ever," Jerozal said. "I'm pretty excited about having so many returning players."

Top blocker Alex Vaughn is back at center, and leading tackler Robert Hooper returns at linebacker. Hooper won the pound-for-pound championship May 21 at the High Desert lifting competition at Eastside High.

Canyon has picked up an impact transfer in offensive lineman Franklin Smith, a 6-2, 225-pound sophomore from Crespi.

Head coach Rich Gutierrez, a former assistant, takes over for Chris Varner, who guided Canyon (10-2) to the Northern quarterfinals last season - the Cowboys' best season since coach Harry Welch left after winning a state title in 2006.

"I think Jonathan Jerozal is going to have a fantastic year. He's a leader, and he works hard," Gutierrez said. "He sets the tone. He's the model for the team because of his work ethic and the way he works extremely hard in the weight room."

HS FOOT: Chaminade ready for more success

| | Comments (0) |

This is coach Ed Croson's third season at Chaminade after taking over a team that went 3-8 in 2009. After making it to the Western Division quarterfinals in Croson's first year, then the semifinals last season, Chaminade is ready to compete for a championship, and the Eagles appear to have the talent to pull it off.

All-Mission League quarterback Logan Scott returns after passing for 1,409 yards and seven touchdowns last year while splitting time with Brad Hunt, who also is back. Terrell Newby rushed for 1,372 yards and scored 18 touchdowns as a sophomore, and every starting offensive lineman returns, including standouts Taylor Hindy, Andrew Chin, P.J. Herrera and Eli Sibrian.

Newby was part of Chaminade's 400 relay team that posted a school track record of 42.9 seconds and advanced to the CIF Masters meet. The other three relay members are football players, too - receivers Elijah Dunston and Isiah Bernard and cornerback Harry Brockington.

How much does Croson enjoy having so much speed?

"I love it," he said. "Now it's time to throw the ball around and get it to them and see what they can do with it."

Chaminade gets started Saturday in the Dana Hills tournament in Dana Point, and there figures to be some good competition with Long Beach Poly, Mater Dei, Tesoro, Narbonne, Loyola and other top programs.

"It's an invite-only tournament, and it's supposed to be the first good one of the year," Croson said.

HS BASE: TV star George Lopez to cover expense of San Fernando championship rings

| | Comments (0) |

George Lopez, the TV star who played baseball at San Fernando in 1979, is so caught up in the excitement of the Tigers winning the City championship that the comic is covering the cost of everyone's championship rings.

"George called me himself," San Fernando coach Armando Gomez said. "At first I thought it was a prank call. He's excited. He loves San Fernando and sometimes wears the colors on his TV show. He wants to be there when the rings are presented, and hopefully we'll get some pictures."

Boys' basketball: Anthony January to Taft

| | Comments (0) |

Former Compton High standout Anthony January will be enrolling at City Section champion Taft of Woodland Hills.

"Let everyone know I'm coming to Taft," January said.

January left the Compton team shortly after the beginning of last season and was apparently home-schooled.

January will impact the Toreadors right away after Taft graduated C.J. Blackwell, Spencer Dinwiddie, Kevin Johnson and Khiry Williams.

January is a 6'7 wing with crazy athleticism. He is one of the best dunkers in the country.

January is expected to make his debut this Saturday at the Oaks Christian summer tip-off and at next weekend's War on the Floor tournament at Pierce College in Woodland Hills.

San Fernando City Baseball Champs!

| | Comments (0) |

San Fernando High won its first City baseball title since 1991, and in the process upended City power Chatsworth in an 8-6 victory at Dodger Stadium.

The Tigers did it the hard way - beating El Camino Real in the semifinals and Chatsworth in the final.

San Fernando starter Jose Reyes went the distance, giving up nine hits and surviving a three-run third, but he was on the mound to close it out and got Ricky Obando to ground into a fielder's choice.

Crazy game so far in City Final

| | Comments (0) |

We're headed to the bottom of the sixth inning in the City Section baseball final and San Fernando, behind a wild, wacky five-run third, leads Chatsworth 8-6.

We've had everything from two squeeze bunts - both resulting in runs - to three pitching changes before a single out was recorded to a double steal gone bad only to good again when San Fernando misplayed two run-downs on the same play.

It's been that kind of game, and we'll keep you posted on how it ends.

Something tells me this 8-6 lead isn't gonna hold up - although San Fernando starter Jose Reyes is hanging in there.

Boys' basketball: Scifres tabbed as next coach at Agoura

| | Comments (0) |

Steve Scifres is taking over the boys' basketball program at Agoura High.

Scifres replaces Joe Riccio.

Scifres moves over from the girls' side.

Girls' basketball: Camacho to Alemany

| | Comments (0) |

It looks as though Bryan Camacho will be back coaching high school girls in the area.

Multiple sources are saying Camacho will be the new girls' basketball coach at Alemany.

Camacho replaces Bethel Trice, who lasted two seasons.

Camacho is a well-respected figure in the region, led Bell-Jeff to tremendous success and spent last season as an asst. at Cal St. Northridge

Baseball: It was too good to be true for Birmingham

| | Comments (0) |

Chatsworth has rallied in the City Section Division I semifinal at USC.

Birmingham led through four innings but the Chancellors used three hit batters, a fielders choice and a groundout to score two runs in the fifth.

Kiefer Kofman and Chris Carlin have come through with RBI singles in the sixth and Birmingham starter Kevin Torres is gone.

Chatsworth leads 4-1 and still batting with the bases loaded.

HS BASE: Lira to start again for San Fernando

| | Comments (0) |

After pitching a complete-game Thursday in a 5-3 win over Kennedy, San Fernando's David Lira is scheduled again tonight against El Camino Real in a City Section Div. I semifinal at USC. First pitch is 6 p.m.

"I woke up this morning and decided to pitch David Lira," San Fernando coach Armando Gomez said.

San Fernando is trying to make it to a City final at Dodger Stadium for the first time since 1991. El Camino Real is the defending champion.

Baseball: Birmingham leads Chatsworth

| | Comments (0) |

Kevin Torres has thrown three perfect innings and only given up one hit as Birmingham leads Chatsworth, 1-0, in a City Section semifinal at USC.

Halfway through and Birmingham is thinking upset.
