HS FOOT: High-powered Alemany prepares to renew success

School's out for summer, and graduation day marks the unofficial beginning of football season, as a lot of area's top programs have begun conditioning drills and are preparing to compete in passing tournaments.

After finishing as a Southern Section Pac-5 semifinalist this past winter, Alemany is breaking in a new quarterback, junior Devon Dunn, and his summer development figures to be crucial for a program with championship aspirations in the section's most competitive division.

"He's got a great arm, he's a smart kid, and he runs real well," coach Dean Herrington said.
Dunn has a bunch of elite receivers, and that should help. Among the returnees are junior Steven Mitchell, who has been offered by Washington and Southern Methodist, along with Jerico Richardson and Corey Sims.

"It's the best receiving corps I've ever had - even at College of the Canyons," Herrington said.

Alemany debuts Saturday in the large-scale Pierce College passing tournament, and among the participants are top passing programs Westlake, St. Bonaventure, Canyon, Sierra Canyon and Dorsey.

"There are some solid teams in it," Herrington said.

An intriguing Alemany prospect is sophomore Deyon Glass, a 6-foot, 230-pound linebacker who is the brother of former Notre Dame star running back Rodney Glass, who ran a 10.4 100 meters and was one of the San Fernando Valley's fastest football players ever before moving on to Arizona State.

"Deyon is a lot bigger than his brother, and he moves real well," Herrington said. "I can't say he's going to be a starter because it's just the beginning of summer, but you can kind of read between the lines."
