CROSS COUNTRY: Local graduates Selve, Mendez win for Glendale

Canyon graduate Alyssa Selve and former Birmingham standout Mizrael Mendez won cross country races Friday for Glendale College at the Golden West Invitational at Central Park in Huntington Beach.

Selve led seven Vaqueros finishing in the top eight in the women's 5-kilometer race, winning in 18 minutes, 20 seconds for her first college victory. Glendale dominated with 18 points, ahead of runner-up Mt. SAC's 81 points.

Karen Rosas, who won the past two weeks for Glendale, finished second in 18:26. Angie Martinez (Burroughs) placed fourth in 18:45, Grace Zamudio (Hart) was fifth in 18:53 and Laura Pluemer finished sixth in 18:54.

Mendez won the for the second week in a row, covering the 4-mile course in 20:00 for the Vaqueros, who took runner-up with 48 points behind San Bernardino Valley (26).

Jesus Gutierrez finished sixth in 20:30, Issac Diosdado (Birmingham) placed 10th in 20:40, Alec Nelson (Saugus) took 17th in 21:07 and Vladimir Diaz followed in 18th, also in 21:07.

Glendale races next Friday at the Southern California preview meet at Cucamonga-Guasti Park in Ontario.
