BOYS' BASKETBALL: Calabasas' undefeated streak ends with Oaks loss
WESTLAKE VILLAGE - After a streak of 10 mostly one-sided basketball victories to start the season, Calabasas High learned Tuesday what it's like on the other side.
The visiting Coyotes (10-1) were outhustled and outplayed in a 68-51 loss to host Oaks Christian in the first round of the third annual Oaks Christian tournament.
Calabasas had won two tournaments - the Campbell Hall tournament to begin the season and the Palm Springs tournament this past week - but this was the first time the visiting Coyotes faced such a scrappy, tenacious opponent.
And it showed.
"We plan to bounce back," Calabasas forward Josh Cohan said. "All we want is to face some good competition and high-level teams, and that's why we're playing in this tournament."
Jackson Miller scored 15 points with 10 rebounds, Chass Bryan added 14 points, six assists and four steals, and Mike Roletti chipped in 15 points and 10 rebounds.
"We just came out running and gunning, and they couldn't stop us," Roletti said. "We scored a lot of points on fast breaks, and I was hitting my jump shots."
Oaks Christian (8-2) started slowly but rallied after intermission. In the third quarter, Bryan scored on a couple of driving layups to help Oaks Christian forge a 9-0 run that stretched the lead to 14 points, and Calabasas never threatened again.
"We just finished a week in Maui, so maybe we were a little tired, but eventually our shooting came around," Bryan said. "It still all came down to defense, and we buckled down. Defense is the key to everything."
