GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Monday's updates from West Coast Holiday Festival
Here are results from the first day of the West Coast Holiday Festival girls' basketball tournament, which is being played at Bell-Jeff, Burroughs, Norco and St. Bernard. There are 2 brackets, invitational (16 teams) and gold (32 teams):
INVITATIONAL BRACKET
Chaminade 52, Canyon 50: Despite only making only one field goal in the fourth quarter and not scoring in the final three minutes, the Eagles (9-2) survived a late Canyon (8-2) rally. Cassie MacLeod led Chaminade with 13 points, including four free throws in the fourth, Annie Tarakchian added 12 points and Mi'Chael Wright contributed 10 points. Alia McCoy had 23 points for Canyon, which received 12 points from Jaya Schultz and eight points from Tiffini Stone.
Mark Keppel 66, Bell-Jeff 55: Alyson Lock scored 21 points, Samantha Lee added 20 points and Sandra Gao contributed 17 points for the Aztecs (9-1), who built on a four-point lead entering the fourth. Jasmine Smith had 21 points, Rishonda Napier added 18 points and Kiah Jones contributed nine points for the Guards (5-5).
Alemany 58, Sierra Canyon 33: The Warriors (10-1) trailed by four points after one quarter, but outscored the Trailblazers 23-2 in the second and never relinquished control. Breanna Calhoun and Mariah Winston both had 10 points and Hannah Johnson and Leslie Lopez-Wood each had nine points for Alemany. Kennedy Burke had 15 points and 14 rebounds for Sierra Canyon (7-4).
Camarillo 60, Antelope Valley 51: Sophomore twins Geralynn and Geraldynn Leaupepe combined for 36 points, including 20 of the Scorpions' 24 in the second half, to hold off the Antelopes (2-3). Keiona Mathews led Antelope Valley with 14 points, before fouling out with 2:18 left in the third quarter. Destini Price contributed 11 points and Crystal Brown added 10 points for the Antelopes, who trailed 36-35 at hafltime but never led in the second half. Kristi Nishimori added eight points for Camarillo (10-2), which was led by Geraldynn Leaupepe's 21 points.
GOLD BRACKET
Burroughs 65, Sylmar 16: The Indians scored the first 18 points and led 27-2 after one quarter. Aysia Shellmire, in only her second game after being sidelined with a disc injury in her back, had 16 points, six rebounds and five blocks for Burroughs (4-5). Delaney Nicol added 12 points and Gabby Pineiro contributed 11 points and seven rebounds for the Indians.
Valencia 60, Pittsburg 44: Kalia Summerlin scored 14 of her 18 points in the first half to lead the Vikings (6-6). Ashley Pinsker added 15 points for Valencia, which led 41-16 at hafltime, before Pittsburg (4-7) got as close as 13 in the second half.
Notre Dame 42, St. Paul 41: The Knights (8-4) rallied from a seven-point first-quarter deficit behind freshman Georgia Perris (13 points) and junior Katherine Wright (11 points). Holly Shafer led St. Paul (8-3) with 14 points and Priscilla Hildalgo added 10 points.
Harvard-Westlake 46, Calabasas 27: Natalie Florescu had 14 points and Brooke Levin added 12 points for the Wolverines (4-8), who extended a seven-point halftime lead by outscoring the Coyotes 16-2 in the third quarter. Arine Costanian led Calabasas (4-7) with eight points.
West Ranch 52, Chatsworth 31: Whitney Branham led the Wildcats (5-3) with 19 points. Christina Provenzano had nine points for Chatsworth (2-8).
