BOYS' BASKETBALL: Viewpoint wins a thriller in Sherman Oaks

| | Comments (0) |

Fans were going crazy Thursday at the Roy Disney Pavilion on the campus of The Buckley School in Sherman Oaks.

There might not be better small-schools game this year.

Jack Borenstein scored 21 points and Matt Pournazarian scored 20 points, including six 3-pointers to lead Viewpoint to a 68-65 Liberty League overtime victory against host Buckley.

Viewpoint grabbed a three point lead on a Jonny Paul shot and free throw, only to see Buckley comeback and take a 65-63 lead on a Tyler Coppin-Carter basket.

Borenstein answered for the Patriots with a lone-range 3-pointer.

Borenstein had a chance to put Viewpoint up by three points but missed two free throws.

Buckley had a chance to go ahead but Chase Holliday missed a wide open layup with eight seconds remaining.

Pournazarian made two free throws and Coppin-Carter missed a good look at a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Viewpoint was darn lucky to get overtime.

Buckley needed a win desperately after a 1-3 start to league competition. The Griffins had a home crowd on its side and were ringing in a brand new hardwood floor.

It looked good when Buckley took a 51-43 with under five minutes remaining in regulation.

However, Pournazarian made two deep 3-pointers from the right corner in the final 2:15 and Borenstein connected on a layup with 16 seconds remaining to force the extra period.

Coppin-Carter finished with 32 points and made his first 11 free throws.

Freshman Austin Butler had 18 points for Buckley.

Viewpoint improved to 11-5, 2-1.

Buckley is now 11-7, 1-4.
