HS BASEBALL: Newbury Park knocks off Saugus in DI quarters

| | Comments (0) |

Newbury Park High is enjoying its best baseball season since 1968, and the Panthers are still going strong after eliminating Saugus 7-3 on Friday in a Southern Section Div. I quarterfinal before an overflow crowd at Saugus.

"It's a big step," Newbury Park ace pitcher Luke Eubank said.

Eubank made it happen. The Cal State L.A.-bound right-hander improved to 10-0, pitching his 10th complete game of the season while limiting the host Centurions (18-11-1) to eight hits with no walks while striking out seven.

It was a windy day, and Eubank was not as dominant as usual - his ERA rose from 1.04 to 1.23 - but the senior remains one of the area's surprise successes after totaling three wins as a junior.

"It was a little shaky, but I got the job done. I had to battle a lot," Eubank said.

Two top pitchers go head to head today, as Saugus and its ace Justin Donatella take on Newbury and star Luke Eubank in a Div. I quarterfinal set to begin in just a few minutes.

But it so windy here in Santa Clarita with the wind gusting straight out that the blustery conditions could prove a great equalizer.

"It could affect Eubank's slider, and his best pitch," Saugus coach John Maggiora said.
