HS BASE: Is that a two-headed coin or what?

coin%20flip.jpgWhat terrible luck local local teams endured Saturday during coin flips in Los Alamitos to decide the home teams for the second round of the Southern Section playoffs.

Seven of the area's eight surviving teams needed to flip because their opponent in the second round had the same amount of home playoff games -- for years, that's the way the Southern Section has done it -- and here's how it went down:

In Div I, Simi Valley lost the flip, Hart lost the flip and Thousand Oaks lost the flip -- all must play at distant locations in the second round -- while, voila, Valencia won the flip to play host to Lakewood.

In Div. II, Crescenta Valley lost the flip.

In Div. III, Notre Dame lost the flip, and Crespi lost the flip.

For those scoring at home, the locals were combined 1-6 on coin flips. Certainly nothing to flip out about, that's for sure.

Oh well, the good news is some should have automatic home games in the quarterfinals -- if they survive.

HS BASE: Southern Section playoff pairings to be announced

tournamentBracket.jpgThe Southern Section playoff pairings are scheduled to be released today around noon, and it will be interesting to see where Crespi will be ranked in D3. The Celts were eighth in the latest official Southern Section poll -- way too low considering their more respectful treatment by maxpreps, Cal-Hi Sports, the Daily News and the L.A. Times -- but that was before Crespi twice defeated top-ranked Notre Dame on Tuesday and Thursday to clinch the Mission League title.

If Crespi is ranked anywhere lower than No. 2, the whole thing is silly. We shall see. Call me a homer, but Notre Dame probably should be a top-four seed, too, especially if Crespi had been ranked higher as it should have been. (I checked with the CIF, and second-place teams can be seeded as high as No. 2. overall.)

Also, in DI, it will be interesting to see how much weight the Foothill League title carries for Hart, which probably deserves a top-four seed even though the Indians are No. 6 in the most recent poll. And Marmonte League co-champs Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks deserve a proper seed, too.

Meantime, the City Section still has business to take care of with the regular season scheduled to finish Wednesday.

HS BASE: Wiley keys Crespi win over N.D. for Mission title

With the Mission League baseball title on the line in extra innings in front of an overflow crowd of about 700, Crespi High of Encino's Zack Wiley swears there were no jitters as he stepped to bat with a chance to knock in the winning run.

"I don't get nervous. I was actually pumped," Wiley said. "I was pretty calm and was actually laughing because we were joking around."

What's to be nervous about, anyway? Wiley pulled a curveball from David Armendariz into left field for a clean single, and Jeremy Rodriguez raced home from second for the winning run in a 6-5 eight-inning victory over arch-rival Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks at L.A. Valley College.

The win, Crespi's eighth in a row, propelled the defending league-champion Celts (22-5, 11-1) to their third league title over the past five years.

Good start for Crespi. The Celts scored two runs in the top of the first off Notre Dame ace Nik Rodarte, cashing in on RBI singles by Jeremy Rodriguez and Zack Wiley.

Rodarte (8-0) has won 11 in a row since his junior year, and his last loss happened to be a 5-3 defeat to Crespi on May 1, 2007.

HS BASE: Are you ready for biggest game of year?

12 crespi.jpgHere's the moment we've been waiting for: Notre Dame vs. Crespi, ranked No. 1 and No. 2 by the Daily News, begin a two-game series to finish the Mission League season beginning tonight at 7 at Birmingham in Lake Balboa.

It will be Crespi right-hander Tyler Johnson (8-0), who is 18-0 all-time, vs. Notre Dame left-hander Nik Rodarte (8-0), as Crespi must win both games to steal the league title away from the Knights, who are undefeated in league competition.

Already a good amount of folks here getting ready for this one. Should be a good one.

HS BASE: Agoura can play spoiler in Marmonte League

spoiler.jpgIn what's proved an otherwise forgettable season, last-place Agoura can play spoiler Wednesday against Simi Valley (19-8, 10-3) in the Marmonte League finale.

Agoura is just 9-18, 2-11 but has won four of its past five including its only two league victories -- a streak that has come just a bit too late to qualify for the Southern Section playoffs as one of the league's top four teams.

But the Chargers can really do a number on Simi Valley, which is tied for first with Thousand Oaks (18-9, 10-3). Both have to win the finale, as Thousand Oaks plays at fourth-place Moorpark (17-10, 6-7), which is fighting for a playoff spot of its own.

Should be compelling, and that's for sure.

HS BASE: El Camino Real looks to break three-game losing streak

It's still early -- 11 league games remaining, plus one nonleague game -- but El Camino Real (12-6, 2-2) could find itself in a hole with another West Valley League loss Wednesday at Taft (7-9, 2-2), which has scored upset league victories over Cleveland (14-3-1, 3-1) and Chatsworth (12-4, 3-1) over the past week and a half.

ECR, which has won five City titles through the years, lost twice to national power Chatsworth last week -- no shame in that, as the defending City champion Chancellors have won seven titles -- but the way the Conquistadores lost was not cool: two errors and a mental error in the bottom of the seventh to fall 1-0.

"Honestly, we didn't take advantage of opportunities, and that was pretty disappointing," ECR coach Vince Orlando said. "We were in a position to be successful."

Bunts and steals

Valencia High stole five bases in its 5-1 Foothill League win over Hart High of Newhall on Friday. Travis Amerian had four of them and freshman Christian Lopes had one.
Amerian was able to turn his steals into three runs as Valencia used its baserunners to distract Hart ace Mike Montgomery.
"Fos us, we gotta run," said Valencia coach Jared Snyder. "We like to put pressure on guys. Gotta take the good with the bad."
Every time Valencia attempted to steal a base, it turned out good.
Hart coach Jim Orzella said Valencia made his team struggle, drawing eight walks and making his pitchers work deep in counts with runners on base.
"Our game is dictated by the pitchers running the show," Orzella said. "They exploited our pitchers and took advantage of that."
As aggressive as Valencia was on the base paths, they played it a little conservative at times at the plate.
In the first inning, with runners at first and third with one out, Snyder had Tommy Ferndino, his clean-up hitter, bunt.
"It was his call," said Ferndino, who lined out softly to the first baseman for the second out of the inning. "I have a lot of confidence in my pushes and drags."
Evidently so does Snyder. With two outs and the bases loaded in the second, Snyder had Ferndino try to bunt again. This time he missed, then eventually struck out to end the inning.
When asked why he would let his No. 4 hitter bunt, twice, with runners in scoring position, Snyder said it's just the way his team plays.
"We don't have a four hitter," said Snyder. "We haven't had a four hitter since Jared Clark. It's what we practice, putting pressure."
Clark, who plays for Cal State Fullerton, hit .421 with 10 home runs as a senior for Valenca in 2004.

Stealing home

Rigo Ramirez, the catcher for Cleveland of Reseda's baseball team, stole home in Wednesday's 9-2 West Valley League win over Birmingham of Lake Balboa.
It was on a busted squeeze play in the fifth inning. Nick Kaid tried to lay down a bunt on the first pitch, but it was inside and got away from the Birmingham catcher.
"I was thinking I was gone, but I saw the ball get away and I started running harder," Ramirez said.
He also said it was probably the first time since little league that he's stole home.
He added a stolen base in the second inning. Birmingham pitcher Edgar Olmos picked Ramirez off first, but Ramirez broke for second and beat the throw from the first baseman.
So when was the last time the speedy catcher had two stolen bases in a game?
He didn't remember the exact game, but it happened once last year.

HS BASE: The good news is the Crespi game has started

clock_screen02.jpgFULLERTON -- But the bad news is it took until 9 p.m. for the first pitch because of delays, so who knows when this National Classic semifinal between Crespi and St. Johns of D.C., will end?

St. Johns threatened but did not score in the first, and Crespi is ready to take its hacks.

gerry.gittelson@dailynews.com

HS BASE: Crespi set for tournament semifinal tonight

fullerton.jpgFULLERTON -- Hmm, already starting to worry about making press deadline tonight, as Crespi has yet to begin warming up for its National Classic semifinal vs. St. Johns of Washington, D.C., because the other semifinal is running late.

If starts much later than the scheduled 8 p.m. first pitch, that's going to be pushing it.

At any rate, it should be a good game. Crespi is 8-3, not the greatest record in the world, but the Celts remain heavily respected and, with a win, will surely remain the Daily News\' No. 1 team entering Friday's finale. Submarine RHP Harry Grace gets the nod for Crespi, and he's fun to watch because his delivery is unorthodox. Kid has good stuff, too. Lots of spin, and he throws hard.

St. Johns, meanwhile, is 6-0, and no less than NINE players are D-I signees, including center fielder L.J. Hoes, who has signed with North Carolina -- but only if he's not a top-three-round draft prospect, as expected. The designated hitter, Scott Silverstein, has 13 RBIs; he has signed with Virginia. Mike Loeb gets the nod; he hasn't pitched often -- no decisions this year, 3-0 as a junior and 1-0 as a sophomore -- but he has never lost a HS game. He is going to Davidson in North Carolina.

Will update when appropriate ....

HS Baseball: Dykstra an All-American

High school baseball season kicks off today and one of the top local players to watch will be Westlake senior shortstop Cutter Dykstra. Dykstra's latest honor is a selection to Baseball America's Preseason All-America first team.

Newbury Park junior infielder Jack Marder has verbally committed to Oregon. Marder hit .371 with 22 RBIs and a team-high 10 doubles last season.

ECR's Orlando looks to make the best of the situation

Vince Orlando and Richard Yi showed up at the El Camino Real of Woodland Hills girls' soccer match Wednesday at Granada Hills to watch the Conquistadores battle the rival Highlanders in a showdown for first place in the West Valley League.

They wound up talking more about the current state of the ECR baseball program.

Orlando was named the Conquistadores interim baseball coach Wednesday, replacing Billy Ramirez, who served as head coach for one year after taking over for longtime program head Matt LaCour, who left ECR to coach at Harvard-Westlake of Studio City last season.

"Principal (Dave) Fehte felt the need to go in a different direction," said Yi, ECR's athletic director. "Vince is going to be the interim coach for one year and Billy will remain on staff as a (physical education) teacher."

Orlando, the assistant athletic director and girls' golf coach, was looking to focus more on administrative duties after coaching with LaCour during the 2005 and '06 seasons, but the Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks graduate possessed the most baseball knowledge of anyone on staff, especially with the decision being made less than a month before the Conquistadores' season opener.

"It's definitely an unfortunate turn of events and set of circumstances that have led to this, but it is because of my respect for Mr. Fehte that I agreed to take the position," said Orlando, who played college baseball at UC Irvine.

"It was more out of necessity. I wasn't looking to get back into coaching (baseball) and it's an unfortunate thing to happen so close to the start of the season. But somebody had to step in, and with the amount of respect I have for our administration and with the position requiring someone with a certain level of experience, I felt compelled to do it."

ECR, which captured its last City Section championship in 2005, went 17-14 last season under Ramirez -- who had coached in the program since 2001 -- and was eliminated in the second round of the playoffs.

"It's strictly an interim, one-year position and I'm going to do the best job I can," Orlando said. "I know a lot of the kids from when I coached with Matt and we're just going to look to make the best of the situation."

Orlando said the search will begin to find a permanent replacement approximately a month after the season starts.

HS baseball: New coach at ECR

A little more than three weeks before its season begins, the El Camino Real of Woodland Hills baseball team has a new coach. Billy Ramirez, who was entering his second season as the Conquistadores head coach, has been replaced by interim coach Vince Orlando.
Orlando, who played at Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks, is ECR's assistant athletic director and was an assistant on former coach Matt LaCour's staff.
The Conquistadores, who won their fifth City Section title in 2005, went 17-14 and were eliminated in the second round of playoffs last year in Ramirez's lone season at the helm.

BOYS' HOOPS: Third transfer declared eligible for Van Nuys on appeal

Victor Rudd, one of California's top juniors according to various scouting sites, has been declared eligible to play for Van Nuys after sitting out nearly the entire season awaiting his fate. The decision follows favorable rulings last week for Mat Hankins and Willie Hankins, who transferred before the season with Rudd from Sylmar to Van Nuys. They were first ruled ineligible by City commissioner Barbara Fiege under a new rule that disallows transfers to follow a former coach; former Sylmar assistant Charles White is Van Nuys' new coach.

BOYS' HOOPS: It's a final: North Hollywood 64, Verdugo Hills 57

By Gerry Gittelson
Staff Writer

North Hollywood's talent wore down Verdugo Hills tonight. Final: Huskies 64, Dons 57.

North Hollywood's Julio Mejia said he was never worried when Verdugo Hills opened its 15-point lead.

“You always have to keep the mentality that you’re going to win,” he said.

Verdugo Hills pulled to within 57-52 on Bobby Blake’s two free throws with 2 minutes, 51 seconds remaining. But Mejia scored six points over the next minute on a three-point play, followed by three free throws, and the cold-shooting Dons managed just one field goal the rest of the way.

“It’s the same thing again. My team doesn’t contain for a whole game – just spurts,” first-year coach Gregory Gibson said. “It’s almost like we’re schizophrenic to tell you the truth. North Hollywood is a good team, and they adjusted to what we were doing.”

North Hollywood’s Jesse Zarate scored 20, and Mejia and Jordin Carroll both added 15.
