BOYS' GOLF: Hagy takes runner-up at Southern Section final, leads list of local qualifiers to SCGA event

Westlake's Brandon Hagy and Jake Katz had already secured their berths June 3 at the CIF/SCGA boys' golf tournament by helping the Warriors take fourth May 14 at the Southern Section team final in Santa Barbara.

But that didn't stop them from producing impressive performances Tuesday at the Southern Section individual final at Hacienda Golf Club in La Habra Heights.

Hagy shot a 3-under 68 to finish runner-up to Servite of Anaheim's Patrick Cantlay (66), who recorded another brilliant round after firing a 65 at the May 18 Southern Regional final at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach. Hagy -- who matched Katz with a 73 at the Northern Regional final May 18 at Sterling Hills Golf Course in Camarillo -- and Cantlay were the only golfers in the 87-player field to break par.

Katz shot 72 to finish in a tie for sixth, one stroke behind Loyola's Marco Fortades, who finished third.

West Ranch of Stevenson Ranch's J.J. Holen (74), Oaks Christian of Westlake Village's Ty Gretzky (75), Camarillo's Bruce Haynes (75), Campbell Hall of North Hollywood's Ramsey Sayhoun (75) and Chaminade of West Hills' Nick Thomas (75) were among the 32 players who advanced to the regional event at the SCGA Members Club in Temecula. Thomas and Sayhoun took second and third at the Northern Regional, both shooting 68s.

Hagy and Katz will be joined at the SCGA tournament by their teammates, who are looking to help the Warriors qualify for the state tournament June 10 at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.

Rio Mesa of Oxnard's Jordan Cuthbert shot 77, part of a group of five golfers who missed the cut by one stroke.

Quartz Hill's Austin Raanes, who shot a 66 to win the Northern Regional, fired an 82 Tuesday.

Despite finishing in the middle of the pack Wednesday in the second round of the Newhall Land Cup at TPC Valencia, Max Homa prevailed in the season-long battle for Foothill League boys' golf individual glory over West Ranch's J.J. Holen.

Homa, competing for Valencia, finished with a cumulative total of 370, ahead of Holen's 373. Valencia's Alex Macaluso, Hart of Newhall's Tanner Diaz, Valencia's Jonathan Chang and West Ranch's Collin Wheeler also advanced to the Southern Section Northern Individual Regionals on May 18 at Sterling Hills Golf Course.

Wheeler won the Newhall Land Cup with a two-round score of 142, one stroke ahead of Holen.

West Ranch captured the Foothill League team title, with Valencia taking second and Hart third. All three teams will move on to the Southern Section Northern Team Regional on May 12 at Soule Park Golf Club.
