CROSS COUNTRY: Simi Valley's Baxter wins national title

Simi Valley sophomore Sarah Baxter won the girls' 5-kilometer individual title Saturday at the eighth annual Nike Cross Nationals at Portland Meadows in Oregon.

Baxter took the lead before the 3-kilometer mark and held off Haley Pierce of Tatnall (Del.) down the stretch to win in 17:37.62. Pierce was second in 17;41.41, helping Tatnall place third with 182 points, trailing six-time national champion Fayetteville-Manlius (60) and fellow New York power Saratoga Springs (84).

Baxter's effort helped Simi Valley place 11th with 287 points, trailing fellow Southern Section Div. II power Redondo Union, which took 10th with 262 points.

Saugus, led by Karis Frankian's 38th-place effort (18:36.20), placed 12th with 325 points, ending a run of four consecutive top-four finishes for the Centurions.

In the earlier boys' 5-kilometer race, Knight senior Bryan Guijarro clocked 15:41.35 to place 15th as four California athletes were in the top 20.

Golden Valley scored 298 points to finish 11th out 22 teams in their Nike Cross Nationals debut. Juan David Garcia was 62nd for the Grizzlies in 16:06.23.
