There were wins by wide gaps and little margins, from wire to wire and rallying in the final meters, significant personal records and major disappointments. There was exhilaration and agony, controversy and compassion, breakthroughs and breakdowns.
The Foothill League track and field final had it all Friday night, including four victories by Valencia's Jasmine Hall (200, high jump, 400 relay and 1,600 relay), three by teammate Aly Drake (800, 400 relay and 1,600 relay) and three from West Ranch's Matt Harmon (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and 1,600 relay).
But even with all their success, were they good enough to make the cut? Here is a list of the top 10 individual performances from an exceptional night of racing and field events at Canyon High.
10. Cody Cox, West Ranch, long jump - After losing to Canyon's Harrison Hall by more than a foot in their March 26 showdown in the league-opening dual meet, Cox had a lot of work to do to compete for the league title. Even with his best jump in a league meet April 30 against Golden Valley, he was still six inches behind Hall's best effort against Valencia. But Cox managed to jump a personal-best 21-2 ½ to get past Hall (21-2) and win the league title.
9. Alex Ecsedy, Saugus, shot put - Canyon's Courtney Saunders came in as the favorite to sweep titles in the shot put and discus, boasting the top shot put mark in a league meet, as well as a head-to-head victory over Ecsedy when they squared off April 2. Ecsedy trailed through three rounds of the final, before taking the lead in the fourth and unleashing a season-best 40-1 ½ throw in the fifth to win the championship.
8. Josh Coefield, Saugus, 200 - There was a lot of pre-race hype after Coefield lost March 26 to Valencia's Zach Tartabull in the league opener, but the Centurions senior took care of the rest of his league opponents in preparation for a rematch. Once he got it, he earned a measure of revenge, pulling away in the final 20 meters to prevail 22.77 to 22.97.
7. Anthony Soto, Hart, 800 - Although he ran faster in the prelims, Soto produced the Indians' only championship on the track with a 1:9.64 effort, holding off challenges throughout the first 600, before pulling away down the stretch from Golden Valley's Gabe Vazquez and Kristian Martinez and 1,600 champion Falco DiGiallonardo of Valencia.
6. Falco DiGiallonardo, Valencia, 1,600 - In one of the deepest fields of the night, the Vikings sophomore captured the championship with an impressive 4:28.60 effort, using an impressive kick to separate himself from Golden Valley's Seth Totten (4:30.79), Canyon's Michael Noris (4:31.20) and Hart's Sam Peckham (4:32.05).
5. Valencia's boys' 400 relay - Not in title contention when Jabari Howard received the baton following the final pass, the junior reeled in Canyon's anchor Shane Habberstad with a punishing stretch run, leaning just ahead at the finish line to get the nod 43.27 to 43.34.
4. Taylor Thomas, Canyon, 300 hurdles - In a season that hasn't been filled with much suspense, Saugus senior Ashley Kramer provided some for the talented ninth-grader in the final 100 meters of the race, before Thomas responded in emphatic fashion to prevail in a personal-best 45.19 to complete a hurdles sweep. Thomas was overcome with emotion following the race, a tribute to how much the victory meant to her.
3. Stephanie Bulder, Saugus, 1,600 - The sophomore led for a good part of the middle of the race, before teammate Anne Randall took over, followed by West Ranch's Jennifer Owen. Bulder remained on Owen's shoulder until there was 300 meters to go, when the West Ranch sophomore tried to put her Saugus challengers away. Although she trailed by five meters inside the final 100, Bulder's long strides and determination caught up with Owen, leaning ahead at the finish 5:02.11 to 5:02.12 to capture the title.
2. Kaylin Mahoney, Saugus, 3,200 - Although she won the league title last year and finished third in the state, there was no reason to think that with less than a dozen races during the regular season after overcoming a stress reaction in her left leg in December, that Mahoney could defend her crown en route to a possible four-peat. Then the sophomore demonstrated why she is one of the most competitive athletes in the area, pulling away from teammates Karis Frankian and Brianna Jauregui in the final lap to win in 10:57.09, with Frankian second in 10:57.52, giving the Centurions six girls under 11 minutes this season.
1. Anthony Pizzo, Canyon, 3,200 - In an instant classic and candidate for race of the year, Pizzo's down-to-the-wire battle with Saugus' Brandon Jauregui was an epic way to punctuate the meet. Pizzo opened a 10-meter lead in the final 300, before Jauregui began to run him down, eventually moving ahead in the final 50 meters. But after a group of disappointing finishes during the regular season, Pizzo was able to lean ahead of Jauregui, who made a habit of narrow victories during league meets. Although Pizzo was mobbed by teammates in celebration, the original results of the race credited Jauregui with the victory by three-hundredths, even awarding him the first-place medal. But after looking at the photo of the finish, it was clear that Pizzo leaned ahead of Jauregui, giving him the win by a 9:36.24 to 9:36.27 margin.
Josh Coefield tried to downplay it after the race. And for once, Valencia's Zach Tartabull didn't have anything to say about his rivalry with the Saugus senior.
Coefield let his running speak for itself Friday night at Canyon, completing a sprint double with a victory in the 200 over Tartabull, atoning for a loss March 26 in the league opener at Valencia.
"He beat me the first time we raced because I kind of underestimated him, but it was different in the final," Coefield said. "It's not like I don't like the guy, he just thought he was the favorite in the 200 and that motivated me."
Although he never trailed in the 100, Coefield needed a well-timed lean to finish ahead of West Ranch's Ross Bacon 11.27 to 11.30. Coefield found another extra burst of energy to pull away from the charging Tartabull in the final 20 meters of the 200 to prevail 22.77 to 22.97. Tartabull sat dejected for a lengthy period following the race, unresponsive to his consoling teammates.
"I knew he was coming and it was just the feeling that I didn't want to get beat again," Coefield said.
Coefield sported a shirt in between races that read "Left no doubt" on the back, in reference to Saugus' sweep of the Foothill dual meets, resulting in the Centurions' first boys' league championship since 1986.
After trailing Hart's Delano Howell last season, Coefield also left no doubt as to who the league's elite sprinter was this season.
"It's definitely a good way to go out," Coefield said. "My sophomore year I won, but last year Delano Howell was there. But this is how I imagined it my senior year."
Alex Hampton doesn't like to lose. And there was no way the Saugus sophomore was going to let it happen again Friday at the Foothill League track and field final.
Hampton had set the Centurions 400-meter program record April 2 against Canyon with a mark of 58.69. That set her up as a legitimate contender for the league title, especially if Valencia senior Aly Drake was going to concentrate on the 800 in the postseason.
But Hampton suffered a loss April 23 to Golden Valley's Lauren Hackney, providing the ideal motivation for their rematch Friday at Canyon High.
Hampton responded with an exceptional performance, quickly making up the stagger on Hackney and the rest of the field en route to lowering her school record to 57.64 and capturing the league championship, with Hackney taking second in 58.27.
"I've been trying to get 57 the past two weeks and I've been right on the boundary, so it's kind of unbelievable (to see that time)," Hampton said. "The last time we raced, she caught me and I'm really competitive and I can't stand when I lose to people. I was a lot more pumped up this time."
Hampton's effort puts her in position to qualify for the Div. II final with another good effort May 16 at the prelims at Moorpark High. If she can make it through to the championship meet, she could be an asset in Saugus' bid to contend for a team plaque.
"I knew I couldn't let anyone beat me," said Hampton, who also ran a leg on Saugus' third-place 1,600 relay team (4:04.23). "I'm always feeling like someone's going to pass me and I really hate to lose, so that really motivated me."
