Lakewood Center mall officials have announced that the long-awaited 159,000-square-foot warehouse store is scheduled to open its doors on Feb. 26, making it the regional mall's fifth anchor store and the first Costco in Southern California to be attached to a shopping mall.

After two years of speculation over what would replace the former Macy's building, the space called "Project X" would be the wholesale store juggernaut known for its bulk items and retail treasure finds.

This will certainly save me having to drive the highway to get there. I like that.

Cheap hotdogs and pizza in the mall. I think they're going to do a great business at lunchtime with those 1.50 dogs and soda! Those don't require a membership if the kitchen is outside the store.

just for kate, we'll put the kitchen inside the store!

This all sounds great, but what about the traffic? Have you been down Candlewood, Del Amo or Clark during the commuting hours? As a Lakewood resident for the last 40 years, I am not happy about this! It is clear that the city is only looking at this finacially and not about the residents! I can't wait to see what the parking lot is going to look like in December!
It is going to be a free for all for the criminals breaking into the cars in the parking lot while we are spending our hard earned money in Costco! And what is going to happen if Costco doesn't make the money that Lakewood is expecting?????

WELL JANE DOE IF YOU BEEN A RESIDENT FOR THE PAST 40 YEARS THAT U DONT HAVE MUCH TIME LEFT TO SEE WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN IN A FEW YEARS

City Supporter said:

Why do residents like Jane Doe always assume that criminals and big boxes come in a package?

Like anyone else, cities needs revenues such as sales tax in order to pay for the amenities that residents like Jane Doe enjoy.

As for the anticipated traffic jams, there is always a cost to everything. Besides, I would like to believe that the city has done a traffic impact study before allowing this project to proceed. Furthermore, with proper planning and increased revenues, cities are in a better position to improve infrastructure thereby improving the traffic situation.

I will choose a progressive city with some traffic jam over a blighted city anytime.

Lakewood council NEVER addressed the traffic problems involving costco.Progressive? ONLY after mounting residential financial losses and several accidents involving traffic vs homes did the clark residents finally fight for and win some of the first solar signs. These signs however do NOT address increasing traffic or the hugh trucks that illegally travel down our street at high speeds threatening the health and residential safety of the residents on clark! the city also refuses to allow clark residents to widen their driveways in order to safely enter and exit our homes...the city has decided pretty lawns are more important than public safety despite their supposed drought policy...although exceptions have been made in other parts of the city..The city has yet to properly line the street for parking with lines that can be seen at night to prevent traffic from merging into our cars causing continuous damage.(standard policy in cities who care about their residents)...as far as infrastructure we had to go to a city budget meeting after YEARS of requests to have signs replaced ..ours were unreadable and missing after 60 years! Planning? hmmm.. clark and askworth are 2 of the top 5 busiest streets in lakewood both are residential neither have service streets and are both used heavily by emts and the police... they also have a park a school and 2 churches in a small narrow space...and that was BEFORE this project! Instead, a truck entrance was installed on clark over residential objections! WE do not enjoy ANY of the perks of revenue...we cannot even get adequate police coverage on MOTHERS day for the park carnival! instead we endure blocked driveways ...and no parking or access to our homes to share the holiday with friends and family! WE have 5 empty homes on our block so far ... would you buy a house on our street ? with our traffic?.. so much for blight. bottom line lets hope costco pays off big for someone ...because the sacrifices many lakewood residents have been forced to make is HUGE!

this is not gonna be fun. I love Target, but I hate the one in Lakewood. toooo many people, toooo many cars/traffic...ugh. it's a nightmare. I love Costco too..but i already know it's gonna be a double nightmare for me! No thank you. I'm sure it'll work out for Lakewood, but I'll spend my money in Signal Hill Costco.

Juan, are YOU a longtime Lakewood resident? Did you go to Lakewood High School? If not, then shut the hell up! I have lived in Lakewood all my life and love this city. We residents in Lakewood have seen many changes over the years. Some good, some not so good. I hope this is a good change and we will all wait and see...
I personally will not be shopping there, but good luck to those that do and enjoy the hot dogs!

Wow, Costco and now Nordies Rack!
Yipppeee!
All the people that are complaining about all the traffic should jump on a bike or walk to the mall.

I'm excited that I don't have to drive to Long Beach for a couple of my favorite shopping spots.

All we need now is a YogurtLand!

To City Supporter: When was the last time you were at Lakewood Center Mall after dark???? I do not feel it is a safe place to go anymore without a police escort! I worked in the mall for years and saw the crime go up. With Costco sitting out there, it is going to be a crime haven! I'll be shopping in Signal Hill. Don't get my wrong, our sherriff's do an outstanding job for our great city and do their very best to keep us safe! Even the mall security do a good job, but with all those people and all those cars... good luck....

all you be quiet. costco is bringing us a bunch of new jobs including me and i am greatful for that. in these hard times it is hard to find a job and when they hired me it was such a relief. with the medical bills building up i need this. and im only 18. so who cares about traffic. deal with it. there are alternate ways besides candlewood and del amo. hello theres arbor or harvey to get to bellflower street and back to lakewood street. you dont have to take delamo. and this costco will bring alot of money to lakewood. and you want to talk about traffic, livein long beach. you all know that you will be shopping at this costco. alot of people will especially thru the hard times. and the parking is way worse at signal hill costco. so stop complaining because think of all the people who have a job and and who are able to provide for there families now.i am able to pay for my school now. its not like were going to invade your houses. geez some people are ignorant.
