Long Beach officials Monday announced that the recruitment for police chief will be extended to Dec. 31 and opened to external candidates.

"Thus far, the city has received applications from a number of highly qualified internal candidates," said Eric Middleton, Managing Partner of Alliance Resource Consulting, the city's recruitment company. "In addition, our firm has also received unsolicited applications from external individuals we feel are strong, well-qualified candidates as well."

The firm has recommended the city consider those candidates, according to Middleton.

"Long Beach deserves to have a pool of highly qualified candidates, both internal and external," Middleton added. "And it would be advantageous for Long Beach (officials) to avail themselves of this opportunity to review additional applications."

Long Beach officials had originally restricted the recruitment to internal Police Department candidates, as well as former LBPD managers.

The extended recruitment period will allow external candidates from comparable California cities to also apply.

That is certainly an indictment of the former police chief!!!

More to the point it is absurd.

The three leading candidates are well qualified to
be Chief of police---much more so than was the man
who will make the selection-when he was promoted -by
the man who selected him---who is void of ANY
qualifications to select anyone!!!!!

In the meantime of course Los Angeles-one of the
appointed its new chief in three days!!!

Memory is a funny thing. The City went outside the PD a couple of times. When it did, I wrote a question the the PT: Do you mean to tell me that there isn't a qualified leader in the PD? History does reapeat itself because I wrote this in the l960's.
