A panel of councilmembers have unanimously approved the appointment of advertising executive Thomas Fields to the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners. Fields appointment now goes to the full nine-member city council, who reserve the right to veto the appointment by majority vote.
Fields, a former screenwriter who moved to Long Beach in the 1980s to run an advertising firm, is Mayor Bob Foster's pick to replace former Commissioner James Hankla, who retired June 30.
So far, he's not run into any political roadblocks on his way to help oversee the city's Harbor Department, which grossed more than $1 billion in revenue last year and serves as a gateway for more than $100 billion in global trade annually.
Fields runs Thom Fields Associates, an advertising and marketing firm downtown. He's also served on the city's Redevelopment Agency and helped oversee for the city the dismantling of the former Naval base on Terminal Island.
The city's Personnel and Civil Service Committee - consisting of councilmembers Dee Andrews, Gerrie Schipske and - approved Fields unanimously during a hearing Tuesday at City Hall.
His nomination goes before the full council Tuesday.
