There were six local teams vying for CIF championships this weekend and they all came up short.

In basketball, the Poly girls and Gahr boys fell. In soccer, the Millikan and Avalon boys losts, and the Los Alamitos and Valley Christian girls were beaten.

The only winter sports team from the area to win a CIF title was the Cerritos girls water polo team.

But the winter sports season will continue....The CIF State playoffs begin early next week. The pairings for basketball and soccer are set to be released around noon on Sunday. Check back for the pairings.

CIF champs get automatic bids to States, and runners-up usually make it, too. But it's not always the case. We'll see how things shape up Sunday.
