Dominguez High basketball star Myron Green has signed a national letter-of-intent with
Ball State.

The 6-foot-4 senior guard/forward averaged 15.5 points and six rebounds last season, helping Dominquez to a 26-7 record.

Ball State coach Billy Taylor told reporters that Green has a "fearless attitude on
the court and is driven to be successful."

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Girls
Dana Garcia, Sr., La Mirada
Softball
The slugging catcher continued her torrid pace last week. In three games, in which the Matadors went two, she went 6-for-9, walked five times, scored six runs, knocked in four runs and hit three more homers.

Boys
Tommy Nance, Sr., Wilson
Baseball
The right-hander, in just his third start this season after rehabbing back from a stress fracture in his spine, threw a three-hit shutout against Lakewood to help vault the Bruins into second place in the Moore League.

Is over.

The Rams' Moore League scoreless inning streak ended at 43 when Poly scored four runs in the second inning off starter Andrew Culver in Friday night's game at Blair Field.

However, Millikan improved to 7-0 after beating the Jackrabbits, 8-4. The win puts the Rams alone atop the Moore League standings with an almost insurmountable three-game lead with five games to play.

"This was great to have to win a game with our bats, and the streak was great, but now we can worry about what really matters (winning games.)," Millikan coach Scott Glasser said. "I knew at the beginning of the season we could be anywhere from first to fifth place and I'm very happy to be sitting in first."

Top Games of the Week

Wednesday
Softball - La Mirada at Mayfair, 3:15 p.m.
The Suburban League has shaped up, as expected as a three-team race among unbeatens La Mirada, Mayfair and Norwalk. This week, the Matadores and Monsoons, who are both 4-0 and ranked in CIF-SS Division II, square off in a pair of games. The second game is Friday at La Mirada.

Thursday
Badminton - Lakewood at Poly, 3 p.m.
The Moore League championship will be decided when the Lancers, led by David Khim and twin sisters Beverly and Brittany Yin, face Albert Seng, Jenny Luong, Faustine Chow and the rest of the Jackrabbits. Both teams have one league loss, and Poly won the first meeting, 13-8.

Softball - Wilson at Lakewood, 3:15 p.m.
The Bruins need to avenge a 4-2 loss to the Lancers in the first round to have any hope of winning the Moore League title for the first time in 16 years. Lakewood comes in 6-2 over its last eight games, while Wilson stumbles in with one win over its last five.

Friday
Baseball - Wilson vs. Lakewood at Blair Field, 3:30 p.m.
The Bruins (13-7, 3-3) have won six of seven and seem to be shoring up their defense, and they are looking to rebound from a 5-2 loss to the Lancers in the first round of league play. Lakewood will be coming off a huge game Tuesday with Millikan and will throw Matt Duffy (4-0, 1.30 ERA).

Baseball - Poly vs. Millikan at Blair Field, 6:30 p.m.
Poly (3-2) has come back from the dead with some big-game performances on the mound from ace Mario Gordon and are very much in the hunt for one of the four Moore League playoff spots. Millikan is a legitimate title contender and will likely throw senior Andrew Culver (4-4, 2.98 ERA).

Here are some comments I've received about the possibilities of LBUSD high schools putting in new artificial turf fields.

* Might ask a lot of the LBUSD employees who just lost their jobs or had to take a severe pay cut if artificial turf is high on their wish list.

* It's about time for the artifical turf fields& track for the kids in this area. it will save alot of money & generate refinue for the schools with other area organizations. It wil allow the schools to host big time events playoff games in football. Then you don't have to move games to Vet stadium & cerritos college. The track programs can host invitational meets. there's no reason that the Poly & Wilson track programs with the amount of success they've had over the years to host big events, and don't forget the soccer programs that would make money for their programs also. t This will also offset constant fund raising by the kids. All the prorams in the LBUSD deserve the upgraded facilites.

* I think this merits serious consideration by all parties. A well orchestrated plan of action will encourage the local community (parents, businesses, district...)to participate in fundraising and implimentation. I would also suggest that girls fields (softball and soccer) be considered in this equation.

* As past president of the Wilson Bruin Touchdown Club, I think artificial/multi-purpose fields are long overdue. If you look at Poly and Wilson it particular, you have campuses built for 2200 kids, yet both have populations of 4500 or more. Space is a premium. An artificial surface that could be utilized by both soccer and football would be great. Actually in our case we would like to see the soccer field (aka football practice field be surfaced as well). Even in today's economic times raising the necessary funds could be achieved through municipal bonds like Downey, Paramount and Riverside have done. That this idea really needs is a strong group of parents, coaches, administrators and the PRESS behind it.

After evaluating the top teams, which is the better leauge: the Moore League or San Gabriel Valley League?

It's been bantered about over the past few years how Long Beach Unified School District high schools "need" artificial turf football/soccer fields and new running tracks - like several neighboring districts have done recently.

There is no doubt that the LBUSD high schools - Cabrillo, Poly, Jordan, Millikan, Lakewood, Wilson - have fields that are as bad as any around, so from that perspective, there is a need. Proponents say new turf fields would save money in the long run.

Those against updating the fields believe it would cost too much money, especially during these times when there is so much financial distress and people out of work.

Well, for anyone wanting to know more about the topic, there will be a meeting Thursday at Millikan's auditorium at 7 p.m. to discuss the possibilities. There will be some of the top people in the country on hand to spill out information and answer questions on everything from cost to installation to funding sources.

Let us know what your feelings on the topic.

Athletes of the Week

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Boys
Andrew Culver, Sr., Millikan
The right-hander hurled a two-hitter and struck out seven to help the Rams blank Wilson, 5-0, on Thursday and put them into a tie with Lakewood for first place in the Moore League.

Girls
Stephanie Jimenez, Sr., Norwalk
A very impressive week in the circle and at the plate. She threw a perfect game with 17 strikeouts in a 3-0 win over Lawndale, and in a pair of victories over Bellflower tossed a three-hitter and a one-hitter, combining for another 17 strikeouts. In four games, she went 10-for-15 with nine runs scored and three RBIs.

Take a look at the CIF Division II rankings for this week.

1. Etiwanda
2. Laguna Hills
3. La Mirada
4. Vista Murrieta
5. Yucaipa
6. Mayfair
7. Lakewood
8. Wilson
9. California
10. University

Four area schools, pretty nice. However, I don't think Mayfair is better than the Moore League schools.

La Mirada, which lost its first game of the season Monday night, and Mayfair will go head to head for the Suburban League title (although Norwalk could have a say in it). I haven't yet seen La Mirada, but word on the street is that the Matadores are tough. I have seen Mayfair and was fairly impressed with the team as a whole.

Even though Poly is sitting at 2-0 in the Moore League, Lakewood and Wilson are certainly the class of the league until the Jackrabbits prove otherwise. Poly takes on Wilson on Thursday at Joe Rodgers Field.

One team missing from the rankings - one that was pretty high in the PT rankings - is Downey. The Vikings are a solid team, when they are on. A doubleheader sweep of Lakewood is testament to that. Their problem is that they run a little too hot and cold. Coach Micah Karzen has to figure out a way to keep them running on hot only.

San Pedro is No. 2 in the PT rankings and should definitely stay there for at least a couple of more weeks. The Pirates had a wild 11-9 win over North Torrance over the weekend, but they are back to their Marine League schedule, which is pretty simple until they get to No. 8 Carson on April 16.

Los Al softball

After seeing just about every team in the PT Top 10, there is no doubt in my mind that Los Alamitos is the No. 1 team in the area, and I'm not sure they will come down from that spot. I'm not sure any team in the area could beat their "A" team.

The Griffins are very, very athletic - the most athletic team in the area - have arguably the top two players in the area (Spalding twins), a solid defense and are two deep in pitching with Amanda Sugita, just a sophomore who is probably the hardest thrower in the area, and Taryn Devich.

Los Al is 12-3, losing two of those games against Mater Dei and Norco, ranked No. 1 and No. 3, respectively in CIF-SS Division I, and to Esperanza (in which the Griffins didn't use their A lineup).

The Griffins, who are No. 6 in the CIF-SS DI rankings, open Sunset League play Thursday against Esperanza. It'll be a different result, I promise.

St. Joseph softball

After watching the Jesters top Mayfair and Downey by 1-0 decisions over the last week, I can tell you that they are indeed for real, a team that will definitely have to be reckoned with.

They have a pretty solid hitting team, an above-average defense and a fair No. 1 pitcher in Christina Rosenbloom.

I think St. Joe coach Ralph Armenta said it best after Tuesday's win over Downey: "We are not a little team anymore."

The Jesters are 11-2, which has one of the best record of any team in the area. Their only two losses were a one-run setback against PT No. 2 San Pedro and 7-0 thumping by Thousand Oaks, which is No. 10 in the CIF-SS Division I rankings.

St. Joseph is No. 4 in CIF-SS Division IV, one spot back of Del Rey League rival Bishop Amat. The two open league play Monday at St. Joseph.
