ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Girls
Dana Garcia, Sr., La Mirada

The slugging catcher continued her torrid pace last week. In three games, in which the Matadors went two, she went 6-for-9, walked five times, scored six runs, knocked in four runs and hit three more homers.

Boys
Tommy Nance, Sr., Wilson
Baseball
The right-hander, in just his third start this season after rehabbing back from a stress fracture in his spine, threw a three-hit shutout against Lakewood to help vault the Bruins into second place in the Moore League.

Robert Morales began covering prep sports in the greater Long Beach area in 2007. When a local football coach asked him how he felt about reporting on preps after many years of covering boxing, auto racing and various other sports, he replied, "Hey, if I'm going to cover prep sports anywhere, I'm glad it's this area because of the level of athletics, the intensity displayed by the athletes and coaches and the support of the community."
