Some reactions to proposed turf fields

Here are some comments I've received about the possibilities of LBUSD high schools putting in new artificial turf fields.

* Might ask a lot of the LBUSD employees who just lost their jobs or had to take a severe pay cut if artificial turf is high on their wish list.

* It's about time for the artifical turf fields& track for the kids in this area. it will save alot of money & generate refinue for the schools with other area organizations. It wil allow the schools to host big time events playoff games in football. Then you don't have to move games to Vet stadium & cerritos college. The track programs can host invitational meets. there's no reason that the Poly & Wilson track programs with the amount of success they've had over the years to host big events, and don't forget the soccer programs that would make money for their programs also. t This will also offset constant fund raising by the kids. All the prorams in the LBUSD deserve the upgraded facilites.

* I think this merits serious consideration by all parties. A well orchestrated plan of action will encourage the local community (parents, businesses, district...)to participate in fundraising and implimentation. I would also suggest that girls fields (softball and soccer) be considered in this equation.

* As past president of the Wilson Bruin Touchdown Club, I think artificial/multi-purpose fields are long overdue. If you look at Poly and Wilson it particular, you have campuses built for 2200 kids, yet both have populations of 4500 or more. Space is a premium. An artificial surface that could be utilized by both soccer and football would be great. Actually in our case we would like to see the soccer field (aka football practice field be surfaced as well). Even in today's economic times raising the necessary funds could be achieved through municipal bonds like Downey, Paramount and Riverside have done. That this idea really needs is a strong group of parents, coaches, administrators and the PRESS behind it.
