It's been bantered about over the past few years how Long Beach Unified School District high schools "need" artificial turf football/soccer fields and new running tracks - like several neighboring districts have done recently.
There is no doubt that the LBUSD high schools - Cabrillo, Poly, Jordan, Millikan, Lakewood, Wilson - have fields that are as bad as any around, so from that perspective, there is a need. Proponents say new turf fields would save money in the long run.
Those against updating the fields believe it would cost too much money, especially during these times when there is so much financial distress and people out of work.
Well, for anyone wanting to know more about the topic, there will be a meeting Thursday at Millikan's auditorium at 7 p.m. to discuss the possibilities. There will be some of the top people in the country on hand to spill out information and answer questions on everything from cost to installation to funding sources.
Let us know what your feelings on the topic.

What was the excuse prior to the economic downfall. LBUSD is far behind on this.
That's probably a question that could be answered Thursday.
yes , Most recent generations of artificial turf have underdone strict environmental testing to include lead and mercury. The issue of lead mostly resides in the rubber crumb infill that could be found in older versions of synthetic grass. Now you have the option of various sand infill or none at all. http://www.actglobalsports.com
