Lakewood, which seems to be as poised as ever to break Poly's dominance of the Moore League in the upcoming 2009 season, showed rather well at the 7-on-7 Air Strike Passing League Tournament in the O.C. over the weekend.
The Lancers topped Santa Margarita, San Clemente and Narbonne to reach the semifinals, where they were finally untracked by St. Bonaventure in the high-profile event.
What might make Lakewood's results even more meaningful is that the Lancers were a bit short-handed.
Starting QB Jesse Scroggins only played about half the downs, with junior Tyler Schultz getting the rest of the snaps. Top WR Kevin Anderson played maybe 5 plays because of a tight hamstring. And standout DB Dion Bailey didn't play in the semis.
Because of that, coach Thadd MacNeal got to check out some other talent. Coach Mac said sophomore WR Darius Powe showed very well, along with fellow pass-catchers Chris Davis and Ron Lewis. Defensively, Bailey, CB Brennan Kelly and LB Jerry Stone were stellar.
The Lancers will play at Mission Viejo on Tuesday at 1 p.m. and then will go to Oregon in July for the Nike 7-on-7 Tournament, a super high-profile national event with the likes of Byrnes, S.C.
* Los Alamitos also played at the Air Strike. The Griffins' biggest question might be who will take over at QB and fill the big shoes left by Colorado-bound Clark Evans. Los Al featured featured lefty Dylan Cook, who by a couple of accounts played well, especially in a first-round win over Poly.
