October 2009 Archives

Warren High running back Jesse Callier, the area's leading rusher last season and so far this year, has been offered a full-ride scholarship and has orally committed to the University of Washington.

Callier has nearly 1,500 yards rushing (250 per game) and 21 TDs over six games so far this season. He is on pace to outdo last year's 2,400 yard season.

Callier will be another star player brought to U-Dub by coach Steve Sarkisian. Here are some of the other players who have also committed to the Huskies.

10. Mayfair

And a couple of thoughts: Saw Poly's Bria Russ last night vs. Wilson. Great talent and has to be considered as best player in the area.... With Jane Croson out of the Los Al lineup with an injury, how much will it affect the Griffins? ... Cerritos is rolling but plays Suburban League rivals La Mirada tonight and Mayfair next week in key matches. ... Downey and Warren are neck-and-neck. Their meeting next week will change that.

Athletes of the Week
Boys
Lakewood football
From QB Jesse Scroggins all the way down to kicker Brad Braswell, the Lancers on Friday accomplished what no other Moore League team has been able to do since 1994 - beat perennial power Poly, 21-14, and break its long win streak.

Girls
Jenny Ho, Sr., Cerritos
Ho had a solid week for the Dons in three sweeps of Suburban League rivals. She recorded 16 kills against Glenn, 19 kills against Artesia, and 12 kills and 11 digs against Bellflower.

Lakewood-Poly Thoughts

| | Comments (21) |

So how do I feel about Lakewood's win over Poly, or more, the end of the Jackrabbits' steak?

To be honest, I was pretty pumped with the idea this week. Maybe actually living in the City of Lakewood has something to do with that.

But as the game unfolded, it felt pretty anticlimatic to me. Maybe because I have no real rooting interest in either school. Maybe because I actually had some amount of empathy for Poly.

Maybe the outcome would have done more for me if David would have beat Goliath. For all intents and purposes, Lakewood was Goliath this time out, and I usually root for the underdog.

More interesting might be next year. Is it a one-year win streak for Lakewood? Will Poly be Poly next year as many suggest?

What are your thoughts??

This from staffer Robert Morales...

Sophomore quarterback Dylan Lagarde has checked out of Poly this week and enrolled at Los Alamitos.

The Jackrabbits weren't scoring much with Lagardge, totaling 37 of 49 points on offense. Special teams has the other 12 points.

Senior Chris Leachman will get the start Friday in the Moore League opener vs. Jordan. That decision was made at the beginning of the week, according to Poly caoch Raul Lara.

"Lagarde, he did transfer out," Lara said Thursday. "The dad didn't talk to me, the kid didn't talk to me. We had already made a decision Monday we were going with Chris Leachman. That might have been the reason. I wish the kid luck and I hope they made the right decision."

It was unclear if Lagarde will be able to play with Los Al right away. Thom Simmons, a spokesman for the Southern Section, said there are three ways a player can play right away upon transferring: He does so before the first day of his sophomore year, a legitimate address change or hardship. Simmons said

Lagarde had already been approved of a transfer to Poly in April of this year.
