August 2011 Archives
It's become a yearly battle of small parochial schools, and one that regularly produces competitive games.
For the third year in a row, St. Anthony and Calvary Chapel Downey will open the season against one another at Clark Field. This will be the ninth consecutive season they'll meet, and three of the last five meetings have been decided by seven points or less.
"It's two schools that are kind of the same size, that have some history in the boys basketball playoffs," said St. Anthony coach and athletic director Brian Walsh. "We've played each other every year I've been here (2003) and it's become a pretty good rivalry."[ep
In 2006, the Saints battled to a 7-0 triumph. The Grizzlies responded with a 20-14 victory the following year, and St. Anthony won in 2009, 29-27. In last year's opener, the Saints held a comfortable halftime lead before CCD quarterback Caleb Baumann rallied his team to a 49-29 victory.
"They came out and threw the ball all over us," Walsh remembered.
Over the past five meetings, St. Anthony holds a slight 3-2 edge.[ep
The Saints are coming off a scrimmage against Mary Star last week, and Walsh has high hopes.
"It was a good showing," said Walsh, a 1995 St. Anthony graduate. "We've got good team speed, we're physical on defense ... It should be an interesting game."
Far too soon.
That was the sentiment at Tuesday's "Celebration of Life" at Cerritos College for Carlos "Ponch" Ornelas and Eddie Valencia. Ornelas, 21, and Valencia, 20, were killed in a single-car accident Aug. 13, and the former Cerritos soccer players were honored in pre- and post-game ceremonies when the Falcons hosted L.A. Mission for their season opener.
"When I got the news, I couldn't believe it," said Miguel Pena Diaz, who coached Ornelas at Warren High and has known the family since Ornelas was 8. "He made a big impact on my life. I've been so destroyed lately ..."
Ornelas was a four-year varsity player at Warren and a two-time San Gabriel Valley League MVP. Last season, he returned to Warren and helped Diaz coach the team.
"He took over about 95 percent of the (coaching)," Diaz said.
In honor of Valencia, Cerritos goalie Danny Lizama will wear his boyhood friend's No. 8 for the rest of the season. The team's jerseys have the initials and number of both players on the sleeve this year.
In a cruel twist of fate, both young men died as they neared a new, exciting chapter of life. Ornelas and Valencia, along with fellow former Cerritos teammate Briant Reyes, were on their way to Kansas Wesleyan University when the crash occurred. All three had accepted athletic scholarships to the school and were just days away from beginning classes.
They were classic examples of what's right about community colleges, young student-athletes who put in the necessary work in the classroom and on the field to transfer to a four-year school.
"They were fulfilling their dreams," said Diaz.
Reyes survived the crash with only minor injuries, but is dealing with a very heavy heart. He's enrolled in classes at KWU and couldn't attend Tuesday's memorial, but Artiaga remembered him during his pre-game comments.
"Briant wasn't hurt seriously," he said, "but he has absolutely dreadful emotional scars."
More than once, Diaz referred to Ornelas in the present tense, and said the funeral was unbelievably difficult.
"It was very hard to close that casket," he said.
Eventually, the Falcons pulled away to win the game, 3-0, and a few smiles were seen among family members. The 12-year-old brothers of each player, Kevin Ornelas and Bryan Valencia, sat with the team during the game and playfully kicked a ball back and forth behind the bench in the second half. The healing process has begun, albeit slowly.
"We can't bring back Eddie and Carlos," Artiaga told the crowd of 1,207, "... but hopefully we can try to give a little piece of them to their famies."
A few things I'm looking forward to watching during Friday's Mayfair-Downey game:
- New Monsoons QB Christian Woo. The junior can throw or run on any down and should bring a flair of the offense.
- Mayfair senior Jerry Smith, called "Slash" by the coaching staff because he's a tailback/receiver/returner/DB. Smith is drawing Pac-12 recruiting interest with his combination of speed, agility and vision.
Downey QB Dallas Lopez, who was the difference in the fourth quarter of last year's SGVL upset of rival Warren.
Downey receiver Jabari Ruffin, who nearly led the Vikings to a comeback victory in last year's first-round playoff game against Inglewood. Ruffin, who stands about 6-5, had eight catches for 102 yards and two scores in that 22-17 loss. His size could be an issue for Mayfair's secondary.
A "Celebration of Life" in honor of former Cerritos College soccer players Carlos Ornelas and Eddie Valencia will be held today at 2:45 p.m. on the campus soccer field.
Ornelas and Valencia were killed in a single-car accident Aug. 13 near the Utah-Colorado border as they drove to their new school, Kansas Wesleyan University. A third friend, fellow former Cerritos player and Kansas Wesleyan teammate Briant Reyes, thankfully survived the crash.
Cerritos coach Benny Artiaga hopes to attract at least 2,000 fans to today's memorial, which will precede the Falcons' season-opening game against L.A. Mission. Blue and white balloons will be sold for $5 each as a fundraiser for the families' medical, funeral and travel expenses and will be released in unison following the game. Several local businesses have pledged $100 for each Cerritos goal scored and a silent auction will be held at DP's Pizza in La Habra following the game.
We're about ready to kickoff the 2011 prep football season with a big slate of games in Week 0.

First-year Wilson High football coach John Janzen was on his way home Sunday from Napa, where his Bruins had dropped a 21-13 decision to the Indians a night
earlier in a season-opener.
Speaking via telephone, it was obvious Janzen wasn't thrilled with the defeat. But he intimated he could take some solace in knowing his team never quit.Wilson was losing 21-6 at halftime some 400 miles away from home and could have packed it in.
But the Bruins held Napa scoreless in the second half - even knocking out its starting
quarterback, Zack Sims, on a 9-yard sack late in the third quarter.
"We've got a lot of fight in us; we didn't quit," Janzen said."Down at haltime 21-6 and
they didn't score in the second half; we shut them down. ... We fought our hearts out in the second half."
Trailing by eight points, Wilson had the ball late but turned it over on downs with just over four minutes to play.
"We had scoring opportunities, we just didn't take advantage," Janzen said.
The Bruins (0-1) will have a bye this week and return Sept. 9 when they play host to
JSerra.
The John Janzen era of football at Wilson High kicked off late Saturday night on a losing note at Napa High in Northern California.
The Bruins took an early lead but gave up 21 points and were defeated by the Indians 21-13 in Janzen's debut as head coach.
After four plays from scrimmage Wilson (0-1) led 6-0. The Bruins defense held Napa to a three-and-out on its opening drive, and Malcolm Smith returned the ensuing punt 55 yards, breaking three tackles en route to the end zone. The PAT failed.
It was all Napa (1-0), which was playing a CIF Southern Section foe for the first time, for the rest of the first half.
The Indians, who held the Bruins to just 66 yards in the first half, took the lead on an 11-yard hookup between QB Zack Sims and Zach Scheinholz with 4:11 left in the first quarter. Sims posted TD runs of 7 and 4 yards in the second quarter as Napa went into halftime with a 21- 6 lead.
Wilson, which had a hard time generating offense, got a break in the third quarter when Sims went down with an injury, and the Indians weren't the same without their starting QB.
That opened the door for the Bruins, and with 7:30 left in the game, QB Brett Harper scored on a 1-yard keeper and Raymond Hinsley kicked the point after to get Wilson with eight points.
The Bruins forced a punt deep in Napa territory and took over at the Indians' 29-yard line with about 4 minutes remaining. However, the Bruins turned the ball over on downs, and Napa ran out the clock.
Harper led the Bruins offense with 63 yards rushing and 66 yards passing. Meanwhile, Wilson allowed Napa's Scheinholz (115 yards) and David Hunt (108 yards) to break 100 yards rushing.
As might be expected this early in the season, defenses were a little ahead of offenses Friday afternoon when St. John Bosco visited Poly for a scrimmage. The Braves managed to put the ball in the end zone three times, but one of those came on a 65-yard punt return by transfer Dalis Bruce.
"I was happy with the way we played against the run," said SJB coach Jason Negro, "... but we need to improve our pass rush."
The Braves, ranked No. 8 in the state by MaxPreps, held Poly's ground game in check with good work from its front four and linebackers. In the secondary, Bruce made several nice plays, including an interception of Chaiyse Hales, and Charles Redd also had an interception.
Poly's defense was led by the outstanding play of senior cornerback Randall Goforth. He held Cal-bound receiver Bryce Treggs without a catch, which was not lost on Jackrabbits coach Raul Lara.
"(Goforth) shut down their best guy," Lara told his team in its post-game huddle.
Poly's lone TD came late in the scrimmage on a one-yard pass from Hales to 6-foot-4 senior Josiah Blandin. Senior kicker Hayden Hunt added a 31-yard field goal that was good despite being partially blocked.
Royce Moore added a 40-yard TD run for SJB and kicker Christian Wehrly booted the ball out of the end zone twice on kickoffs.
The Braves open their season at 7 p.m. Sept. 2 at home against Mission Hills from the San Diego Section. Poly, ranked 18th in the state by MaxPreps, travels to No. 24 Sacramento Grant on Sept. 3.
It might not count in the standings, but St.John Bosco travels to Poly for a scrimmage Friday at 4 p.m. Easily, the Jackrabbits and Braves are two of the top three teams in the area. Definitely worth a look-see.
St. John Bosco has the potential to have a big year, but teams like Servite and Santa Margarita stand in its way. Los Alamitos is always good. Valley Christian should be competitive once again.

Here are some tips from NCSA Athletic Recruiting for student-athletes who want to earn a college scholarship.
"Every athlete needs a game plan for recruiting success. Unfortunately, most recruits are unsure which steps to take and when to take them. We prepared the checklists for each class so student athletes can make sure they are on the right track," says NCSA Director of Recruiting, Randy Taylor.
Freshman
Meet with high school guidance counselor to inform him/her of your goal to play college athletics and make sure your core course curriculum matches with NCAA approved core courses.
Fill out an Initial Target List with 25 schools you want to pursue (5 DI, 5 DII, 5 DIII, 5 NAIA, 5 Junior College (if applicable).
Research athletic benchmarks for your sport and use Recruiting Guidelines to set specific athletic goals.
Introduce yourself to 3-5 college coaches at levels at which you meet the recruitment guidelines. Start off low and you can always move up divisions.
Sophomore
Maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average and take Pre-ACT and Pre-SAT classes.
Update your Target List to include 40 schools across all divisions.
Join a team or club outside of high school that will provide more competition and additional coaching.
Introduce yourself to 5-10 new coaches and keep track of contacts in a Correspondence Log.
Junior
Begin ACT/SAT preparation and use Division I core course worksheet to review and update specific academic goals. Be prepared even if you don't think you'll play DI sports.
Get phone number and email addresses of all coaches and ask them for references.
Review the recruiting timeline for each division in your sport and make sure your recruiting process matches the levels you are targeting.
Update priority list and re-rank Target List of 40 schools. Consider how interested coaches seem in you.
Senior
Complete FAFSA form.
Request ACT and SAT be sent to NCAA Eligibility Center by marking "9999" in code box where indicated.
Narrow down Target List to 10-20 schools you are seriously considering. At least five should be schools that are heavily recruiting you.
Schedule official visits, unofficial visits and game day visits. If a coach has not extended an official visit, ask the coach if one will be extended.
Prior to signing day, ask top coaches where you stand on their recruiting list.
Begin scholarship negotiation early, and consider what you will say if an offer is extended during an official visit.
If you are corresponding with less than 15 schools, call at least 10 new coaches at level where you are receiving attention. Introduce yourself and ask if they are still recruiting.
