Mayfair extends winning streak vs. Bellflower

| | Comments (0) |

Mayfair held Bellflower out of the end zone all night and shut the Bucs out in the second half of a 26-5 Suburban League victory on Friday night, the Monsoons' 14th consecutive triumph over their district rival.
Mayfair has won every meeting between the schools since 1998 and took over sole possession of first place in the Suburban League at 4-0. Bellflower fell to 4-1 in league play and has a bye next week.
"There was a lot riding on our backs," said Mayfair senior linebacker Bryan Kvapil, a three-year varsity starter. "We didn't want to be the first to lose (since 1997). We came out and took care of business."
The odd final score - which looks more like a blowout baseball final or a runaway basketball game after one quarter - was the result of a safety, a field goal and two missed PATs.
Bellflower had a four-game winning streak broken and fell to 4-1 in league play. The Buccaneers have a bye next week, and no doubt will be rooting for La Mirada (3-1) to win next week's showdown with Mayfair and create a three-way tie for first.

Friars come back, but Braves counter

| | Comments (0) |

A 3-yard touchdown run by Andrew Moore pulled Servite even with St. John Bosco 21-21 with 2:57 to play in the third quarter. But on the next play from scrimmage Rene Medina found a streaking Bryce Treggs for a 79-yard TD and a 27-21 St. John Bosco lead; the extra point kick was no good.

Braves take lead

A 1-yard touchdown run by Royce Moore has given St. John Bosco a 21-14 lead over Servite with 9:21 to play in the third quarter.

Braves tie score

| | Comments (0) |

A 2-yard touchdown pass from Rene Medina to Bryce Treggs with 16 seconds left in the first half has pulled St. John Bosco into a 14-14 tie with visiting Servite.

Mayfair leads at halftime

A pair of second-quarter touchdown runs have given Mayfair a 13-5 lead at halftime of Friday's important Suburban League game.
Jerry Smith ran in from 26 yards with 3:40 left in the first half and Aaron Brown scored from 22 yards away with 2:00 left.

A 30-yard touchdown pass from Cody Pittman to Ainslie Johnson has given Servite an early 7-0 lead over host St. John Bosco.

Kickoff approaching for Bellflower, Mayfair

| | Comments (0) |

The battle for first place in the Suburban League is less than an hour from kickoff at Ron Yary Stadium.
Both Bellflower unbeaten in league play, with the Bucs at 4-0 and the Monsoons 3-0. The Bellflower Unified School District rivals haven't played for first place since 2006, when both entered the game with 5-0 records. Bellflower's last victory in the series was 1997.
Since both teams use Ron Yary Stadium as their home field, Mayfair is the designated home team tonight and wearing its dark uniforms.
Check back later for a halftime score and postgame thoughts.

With the State Bowl picture becoming a little clearer each week, it's time to take a look at the CalPreps State Football Rankings.

Its super-duper unlikely that any of our top teams will get into a State Bowl game. St. John Bosco is No. 16 and Poly is No. 18. Both have one loss against them.

Los Alamitos drops Fountain Valley

| | Comments (0) |

After losing two in a row, Los Alamitos got back on track with a 28-0 victory over Fountain Valley in a Sunset League game at Vets Stadium.

Quarterback Dylan Lagarde threw three touchdown passes, and running back Cody Paul also found the end zone for the Griffins (5-2, 1-1) on Homecoming Night.

After a slow start, Los Al took charge. Paul scored on an 11-yard run in the first quarter, and Lagarde hooked up with Kyle Roberts on strikes of 10 and 30 yards in the second to give the Griffins a 21-0 halftime lead.

Early in the fourth quarter, Los Alamitos put the game away as Lagarde found Josh Caiquo for a 30-yard TD.

On the other side of the ball, the Griffins defense, after a strong outing the week before against Edison, was amazing in recording its second shutout of the season.

Bellflower pulls out OT victory

| | Comments (0) |

Julio Portillo's PAT in overtime gave Bellflower a 28-27 victory over visiting Norwalk on Friday, giving the Bucs a 3-0 record in the Suburban League.
Bellflower trailed by two touchdowns in the second half but stormed back for the victory. Ryan Hunley's 17-yard run cut Norwalk's lead to 21-14 in the third and Travis Newberry tied the game with a 15-yard TD run in the fourth.
The Lancers got the ball first in OT and quarterback Bobby Favela scored on a 1-yard run for a 27-21 lead. But Ezequiel Zuniga's PAT missed, setting up the Bucs.
Hunley scored on Bellflower's OT possession and Portillo's PAT, which barely cleared the crossbar, ended the game.
"One thing our kids won't do is quit," said Bellflower coach Derek Brown. "... I couldn't be prouder of our kids and coaches."

Week 6 Football Scores Are In

| | Comments (1) |

Poly proved its the top team in the Moore League with a big win over Lakewood on Friday night. That leaves the Jackrabbits and CABRILLO tied for first place.

Lakewood takes on Cabrillom, which just barely got by Compton, next week.

It might have been a big surprise to some, but Paramount handed Gahr its first loss of the season in an SGVL opener. The Pirates have some good DBs and were much better than their record indicated.

In the Suburban League, things went pretty much to form. However, Norwalk proved tough, but not tough enough as it lost to Bellflower in OT. It was the second week in a row the Lancers lost in OT.

Valley Christian scored a big comeback win vs. Village Christian in Olympic League.

Bellflower looks to maintain Suburban League lead

| | Comments (1) |

Bellflower takes a 2-0 Suburban League record into tonight's game against Norwalk at Ron Yary Stadium and hopes to maintain its early half-game lead on Mayfair.
Mayfair (1-0) hung on for an OT victory last week against Norwalk, and the Bucs will have to contend with Norwalk's Double Wing T offense. The Monsoon play Cerritos tonight at Gahr High, host Glenn next week and should enter their Oct. 28 battle with Bellflower with a 3-0 league mark. Bellflower visits Artesia next week.
Tonight's third league game pits Glenn and La Mirada, two 1-1 teams looking to stay in playoff contention.
Check back later for a halftime update and postgame thoughts.

Bellflower rolls to early lead

| | Comments (0) |

Travis Newberry and Ryan Hunley combined for 346 rushing yards and five touchdowns in the first half Friday night, giving Bellflower a commanding 33-3 halftime lead over Glenn at Ron Yary Stadium.
Hunley has scored four times on runs of 3, 35, 56 and 85 yards and has 180 yards. Newberry scored on a 62-yard run and has 166 first-half yards.
Glenn's only consistent threat has been junior back Steven Reed. He's run for 82 yards and caught three passes for 9 yards.

Glenn, Bellflower meet tonight

| | Comments (0) |

A share of first place in the Suburban League will be at stake tonight with John Glenn visits Bellflower at 7 p.m.
The game could be a battle of Glenn running back Steven Reed against Bellflower's defense. Reed has rushed for 847 yards and 11 touchdowns. Bellflower has forced a pair of turnovers last week against La Mirada and shut down the Matadores' running game.
Both teams sport 3-2 overall records and 1-0 marks in the Suburban League. This should be interesting.

Thursday night football

| | Comments (0) |

Was excited to see Gahr's passing game for the first time this season. It was OK at best as it was on-track/off-track for much of the game. But what stole the show was the Gladiators' defense in a 47-7 win over Bell.

If Gahr (5-0) can have any semblance of a defense when SGVL play begins next week, the Gladiators are going to be tough to beat.

Other scores from Thursday:
Northwood 31, Valley Christian 14
Morningside 17, Firebaugh 14 in OT

Check back for updates from Friday's games.

LB State soccer star Link headed to US camp

| | Comments (0) |

Nadia Link, a junior and the Big West Conference's leading scorer so far this season, received a call-up to the U-23 U.S. national team camp Sunday.

The workouts, which will be overseen by U.S. Soccer Women's Development Director Jill Ellis, U.S. Soccer Women's Technical Director April Heinrichs and U.S. Women's National Team head coach Pia Sundhage, will take place today through Friday at Home Depot Center.

The reason for the camp is to evaluate a group of 24 players, including some of the top college players and young professionals, for possible call-ups to U.S. Women's National Team camps heading into the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in January and the 2012 Olympics in London.

Link will rejoin the 49ers in time for Sunday's home match against CS Fullerton.

Bellflower's defense shuts down La Mirada

| | Comments (0) |

Bellflower played stellar defense Friday night and brought an end to La Mirada's 15-game Suburban League winning streak, 21-7
The Bucs (3-2, 1-0) forced a pair of turnovers and converted both into points. Just before halftime, junior linebacker Noah Hernandez read perfectly a Gerry Myers pass into the flat, jumped the route and returned the resulting interception 82 yards for a touchdown. Late in the third, Daniel Poplar returned a fumble 54 yards to the 1, and sophomore quarterback Swain Williams scored a few plays later.
La Mirada (1-3, 0-1) ran for just 55 yards in the second half. It's only score came on a bizarre play that saw two fumbles - one by the offense, then the defense - and a 50-yard return by Jimmy Hills.[ep
The Matadores entered the game as the two-time defending Suburban League champs and lost a league game for the first time since 2008.
