Bosco's Vogel gets US soccer call

| | Comments (0) |

St. John Bosco High senior soccer standout Derek Vogel has been invited to try out at a U.S. U-20 national team camp April 9-16. If coach Tab Ramos likes what he sees, Vogel will be placed in the national player pool and be on call for games/tournaments with the team.

It's the first time Vogel, the 2011 Dream Team Player of the Year, has received a call from the national team.

"It's really, really exciting," he said. "I hope for the best to come out of it. It's a great opportunity. It'd be awesome if I made it. It's a big deal just to make the tryout. A whole week, it'll be good just to go and learn."

P-T Boys & Girls Soccer Top 10

The boys rankings got a slight juggle this week, but the top six teams stayed intact. That could change next week as Paramount-Warren, Artesia-Mayfair, Poly-Cabrillo and Poly-Millikan games on tap.

The girls rankings got a big shakeup. With Wilson losing to Poly and Los Alamitos just getting by, it was time to bring up a smooth-playing team from St. Joseph to No.1 and undefeated Millikan to No. 2. Millikan's stay will either be short-lived or cemented as the Rams face Poly and Wilson this week.

LB State soccer star Link headed to US camp

| | Comments (0) |

Nadia Link, a junior and the Big West Conference's leading scorer so far this season, received a call-up to the U-23 U.S. national team camp Sunday.

The workouts, which will be overseen by U.S. Soccer Women's Development Director Jill Ellis, U.S. Soccer Women's Technical Director April Heinrichs and U.S. Women's National Team head coach Pia Sundhage, will take place today through Friday at Home Depot Center.

The reason for the camp is to evaluate a group of 24 players, including some of the top college players and young professionals, for possible call-ups to U.S. Women's National Team camps heading into the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in January and the 2012 Olympics in London.

Link will rejoin the 49ers in time for Sunday's home match against CS Fullerton.
